GeorgeandDot, I think you'll love it. I know you aren't the biggest fan of this production, but this album sounds lush and full. I adore it already.

I haven’t seen a show yet where I wasn’t able to listen to the Original Broadway Cast Recording. I’m glad this won’t be the first one. And since I won’t be seeing the show until mid-August, even with a June release it gives me plenty of time to fall in love with the music.

Um-- you DO know that there already exist dozens of recordings of the My Fair Lady score, right? Falling in love with the music of a 1956 show does not require a new CD...

I’d rather hear it from the actual current show source, or as close as possible. I’d rather not hear something from 60 years ago when I can get it from this year, or this decade. I’ll wait for the current OBCR to be released.

I placed my order on BR's site. They were very good about handling the error where I accidentally ordered 12 copies. This is the first time I have dealt with them, and it's been great so far. If the disc comes a week early, I ain't complaining. Broadway Records to release MY FAIR LADY cast album

Re the comment about not needing a new recording of MFL to love the music:  That's true. The Harrison/Andrews records are divine. But it's also nice to hear a new approach and to support the current productions. I can't go to NY to see the show at this time, but I can at least buy the album. (I will do the same for Carousel when it's released in July.)

I checked Napster to see if the current revival was available before I had realized there was an announcement about the upcoming release. There’s several versions available including two from Broadway productions as well as the motion picture. I made a conscious decision then that since this was among the first shows I’ll ever seen on Broadway, to wait for the new release. I’m sure the other albums are wonderful, but if I can hear this show, and how amazing this show is going to sound before I see it, then I’ll support this show in that way too.

By the way, I’ve never seen “My Fair Lady” (the movie), and probably won’t before I attend the performance at the Lincoln Center. Just like I never watched the movies for “The Lion King”, “Phantom of the Opera”, “Dirty Dancing”, “The Bridges of Madison County”, “Cabaret”, “The School of Rock”, and “Waitress” before I saw those shows.

Just ordered my copy now - I've been listening to the 2008 South Pacific recording in preparation. I'm sure it will sound incredible, but I'm still not over how burned I felt by the King and I recording. I had looked forward to that recording since the cast was announced, and while I'm grateful I have a glorious recording of O'Hara's "Hello, Young Lovers", there was so much that was unrecorded. However, the score of "My Fair Lady" can't be more than 75 minutes long, so I'm cautiously optimistic for the recording. Besides, no matter what, I'll be seeing this production in all its glory in the fall, so I'm hoping for a splendid recording!

dmwnc1959, while I totally understand wanting to let the new cast weave their way into your ear (and heart) before seeing the show, I must say a word for the Original Broadway Cast Recording. My Fair Lady has one of the most perfect cast recordings in history, along with Candide, Bye Bye Birdie, and A Little Night Music.  The secret to these recordings is they were all recorded under Goddard Lieberson's eye, who basically single-handedly created a golden age of cast recordings. No matter how great this recording is, the age of recording cast albums in huge ballrooms (to recreate the air and space in the theatre) the week after opening night (to recreate the energy) is over. And, of course, the definitive performances by Julie Andrews, Rex Harrison, and Stanley Holloway. So while I hope this recording will be as stunning as it ought to be, I hope you will listen the original recording, even if it is after you see the show. It is one that should not go unheard.

Edited because "Hello, Dolly!" was recorded by RCA Victor, not Columbia - though I stand by my statement that it is a perfect recording.

I agree! The My Fair Lady original Broadway cast recording is one of the all time great cast albums. Camelot too. Both with Julie Andrews.

Awww, snap! How anyone's life could lack a viewing of Dirty Dancing is beyond me. LOL  I have seen that movie maybe 100 times, and I could quote just about every line.

Too funny! When I told some of my lady friends at work I was seeing the show, and they told me how much they LOVED the movie, I responded I had never seen the movie. You should have seen the look on their faces. It’s like they went into shock! Still haven’t seen the movie. lol

I know it’s weird, but I don’t want to see the movies before I see the show because I want the musical performance to stand on its own feet without relentlessly comparing it to the movie. And I’m always afraid it’ll lessen my experience or make me appreciate the musical less. Maybe some of our veteran members here can separate those two experiences, but I’m still a novice. Of all the shows I mentioned in that previous post, I’ve still not seen any of the movies. I want that musical experience to always be with me. I can listen to the cast albums now and see the shows in my minds eye like it was yesterday, and smile or tear up. And I love that feeling.

I think that is completely reasonable and I am so happy you decided to watch this show without knowing much about it. I think we passionate musical nerds just want you to experience the original cast recording AND the movie some time in your life. We love to share our joys.

And I share your excitement. It seems to be contagious. Since I have so much time on my hands between my return from NYC next Friday, my roadtrip to see “Hamilton” on my birthday in July, and my trip back to Broadway in mid-August, I may give it a go if you don’t really think it’ll ruin the musical for me. I’ll have purchased the new digital download long before then and will start listening to it before my return from Cleveland anyways, a month before seeing “My Fair Lady”. I have a great seat, front row Loge Center, a few seats off of the house-left aisle. Very excited!!!

Personally, I find the movie doesn’t age as well as many make it seem to. Regardless of lip-syncing, which I always think is sacrilegious to the art form, there are some good performances by Rex Harrison and Audrey Hepburn. However, they don’t mesh well or help with a story that many find offensive today. I can see why people were all over it 50 years ago, but in a more socially and politically aware world the movie just doesn’t do it for me.

I think many of the critiques towards the film are very fair, but I still think it's one of the most deserving Best Picture winners ever and one of the best movie musicals, not the best but one of the best. Marni Nixon lip-sync aside, I found Audrey Hepburn to have such beautiful screen presence during "I Could Have Danced All Night". If it wasn't for the movie, I wouldn't be such the MFL fan I am today.

I would strongly suggest NOT watching the movie before seeing the Lincoln Center production. As lovely as the new sets and costumes onstage are, they still pale beside the splendors of Cecil Beaton and Gene Allen's designs for the film. Some may argue about the relative merits of the performances in the film, but no-one can doubt that the designs for that film represent the apogee of period movie musical work at its most luxe, by which all other musicals are compared.

By all means, soak up the new CD, thrill to the stage show, and only then should you treat yourself to the magnificent Warners Bros film. Great as the stage show is, the visuals in the film will make your hair stand on end.
