Mine is, I'm sure you can all guess, "Let's Talk Dirty to the Animals," from Gilda Radner's Broadway show. I sing an acapella version of it every time I visit this site, substituting the names of members who have animals in THEIR screen names for the original lyrics! It's fun!
"Finishing The Hat" from Sunday in the Park "Why" from Tick...Tick...Boom "Who Will Love Me As I Am" from Side Show (yeah, Broadwaylilhead, I'm with you on that one) "Heart and Music" and "In the Middle of the Room" from A New Brain and I've connected with most of what Jaime sings in "The Last 5 Years"
There are glasses to raise in the praise of survivin' the day
Well, I have a somewhat different story to add in here. When my parents got married, they had both "Sunrise, Sunset" and "One Hand, One Heart" sung. I have already decided that someone will sing "One Hand, One Heart" at my wedding, because I think that is the perfect song for the occasion!! It's so sweet. But anyway, I have more of a lyric that I connect with myself. It changes quite often, but at the moment it is Harry Houdini singing in "Success" from "Ragtime"..... "if you're trapped, and failure seems imminent, think of Houdini that fabulous immigrant. Break those chains with all you possess." good message, good message.......
Well, considering that I'm almost 16, taking driving lessons, and always hating my parents (lol j/k) I would have to say "Mama I'm A Big Girl Now" from Hairspray!
Wow! Never really expected anyone to bother answering this question.....I slept on my own question and this is what I came up with: -Mama I'm a Big Girl Now (my mother wouldn't even let me cross the street by myself until 6th grade) -I'm Not That Girl -Take Me As I Am -Impossible Dream That's all I came up with, but its great to hear everyone else's opinions on this topic!!!!!
Defying Gravity-I don't like being told what to do, or more I feel like I am being trapped alot "I'm through with playing by the rules of someone else's game.
Corner of the Sky- I always feel like I'm not satisfied with what I have. I want to find out what kind of person I'll become and profession I'll have. For that matter, I think "Purpose" is a good one.
"Sing the words, Patti!!!!" Stephen Sondheim to Patti LuPone.
"For Good" from Wicked - my friend, Jess, and I are soooo close and we're going to different colleges soon *sob* so that song is definitely 1 for me and her :)
"I Am What I Am" from La Cage Aux Folles - I like it, as I'm sure everyone does hehe, when people take me for who I am
"Defying Gravity", Wicked - Whenever someone puts me down this song's my temporary lifeline!
"I Want To Make Magic", Fame - Me and what I wanna do :)
"Dancing Through Life", Wicked - It's nice to think that in order to lead a great life Id only have to be thoughtless hehe
Did they have brains or knowledge? Don't make me laugh...they were popular!
dancing through life is also about being yourself and you wont act like an imbusel (or however you spell it) ex. "those who don't try, never look foolish." I like that song too.
"Sing the words, Patti!!!!" Stephen Sondheim to Patti LuPone.
I have not actually seen Wicked because I live in the UK *cries and stamps feet!* but I'm sure my discman is getting a little tired of the CD...aw well
Did they have brains or knowledge? Don't make me laugh...they were popular!
At the moment "Anytime" from William Finn's "Elegies." When I first got the CD for Christmas, I heard the song and bawled my eyes out. I lost my maternal grandmother to cancer in July 2001 and I hadn't cried since then. Then this last week I lost my paternal grandmother and the song was such a big comfort. Anyway, happier topics. Other songs I identify with:
"I'm Not That Girl"/"On My Own" - I think everyone has had unrequited love in their life at least once and if you haven't you are really really lucky.
"Unusual Way" - This came on when I was on the way to see the unrequited love of my life who has no idea of my love, after they went off to college and came back for Thanksgiving. When Laura Benanti (in the revival) sings "You don't know what you do to me, you don't have a clue, you can't tell what it's like to be me looking at you" I teared up and had to circle the block a couple of times to regain my composure.
"Defying Gravity" - the line "Too long I've been afraid of loosing love I guess I've lost well if that's love it comes at much too high a cost"
ANYTHING from "The Last Five Years" especially "See I'm Smiling," "Shiksa Goddess," and "If I Didn't Believe In You."
There's much more but I could go on for pages so I'll stop now =)
I've started smiling. It's not my style. But it's been highly recommended that I smile. So I've been grinning and sad to say...I think I like it.
This thread reminds me of a Tracey Ullman skit. She was a psychiatrist advising her patient: "You know what your problem is. You don't have a theme song. Everybody needs a theme song...AND THIS IS MINE!!! (jumps on desk, cue to musical number, huge spangly Art Deco backdrop falls behind her, etc...don't remember ANYTHING she sang, though)
Well, let's see. My theme songs of the moment are "I Got It Bad And That Aint Good" and "The Music That Makes Me Dance".
I get too hungry for dinner at eight I like the theater but never come late I never bother with people I hate That's why the lady is a tramp
I don't like crapgames with Barons and Earls Won't go to Harlem in ermine and pearls Won't dish the dirt with the rest of the girls That's why the lady is a tramp
Don't know the reason for cocktails at five. I don't like flying-I'm glad I'm alive. I crave affection, but not when I drive. That's why the lady is a tramp.
Folks go to London and leave me behind. I'll miss the crowning, Queen Mary won't mind. I don't play Scarlett in Gone With the Wind- That' s why the lady is a tramp.
I like to hang my hat where I please. Sail with the breeze. No dough-heigh-ho! I love La Guardia and think he's a champ. That' s why the lady is a tramp.
Girls get massages, they cry and they moan. Tell Lizzie Arden to leave me alone. I'm not so hot, but my shape is my own. That's why the lady is a tramp! The food at Sardi's is perfect, no doubt. I wouldn't know what the Ritz is about. I drop a nickel and coffee comes out. That's why the lady is a tramp!
I like the sweet, fresh rain in my face. Diamonds and lace, No got-so what?
