Do we really need Funny Girl? It isn't that spectacular of a musical/is a bit dated/if a bit boring and if that is how Lea wants to make a "triumphant" return to Broadway...

However, I do think Lea will be itching to come to Broadway soon. Just like most of the other Glee kids, she is having trouble making a successful career for herself after the show - have you seen Scream Queens' ratings?

^Maybe that's why Harvey Fierstein is doing a revision of the book for the upcoming revival taking place in London.

Why does Harvey keep getting these jobs? I love him, but has he ever written a good book?

Yes. You just gave a laundry list of books he is credited for. Great.  That doesn't address the substance of Scarywarhol's post...

Watched the panel last night and, no, it seems like he's saying that it is not going to happen.

I liked the work Harvey has done on Newsies and Kinky Boots, and he apparently won a Tony Award for La Cage aux Folles for no reason.

The La Cage book is creaky as anything.

Is it horrible to suggest this as the NBC live musical for next year? I think Lea could make a great Fanny as long as Ryan Murphy isn't involved. Otherwise we'll be stuck with Lea's belting faces for three hours. A great director could help things along. (Or just, you know, a revival with Jessie Mueller, Annaleigh Ashford, or Annelise van der Pol.)

My ears are still bleeding from her Tony performance... This would be a disaster.

Mattbrain, I constantly disagree with the opinions of others on this board. But I never police people for expressing theirs. I am constantly confused by this impulse. That's my opinion of La Cage's book. This is a discussion board.

Some discussion.

This post confuses me. Mattbrain is putting down someone's opinion because that person put down someone's opinion. Weird.

I wasn't even putting anyone down, I just disagree. I think the book to La Cage played very rusty in the acclaimed last revival. I thought the characters were very flat and the dialogue hadn't aged well. And I have affection for that show, and that score. All of Fierstein's books, even the new ones, tend to feel very cliche and unincisive to me. (Love the guy as an actor and a personality.) That has nothing to do with anyone on here.

I agree with you.

The book is out-dated. It's not a bad book, it's just that times and values are not the same as they were in the late 80s.

As for Harvey I think he can be an excellent writer, but he can at times also be a hack.

I still find anything he does worthy of paying to see though. Unless he's singing.

All bets are off is he sings.

Lea didn't seem at all into the idea either when it is brought up. Looks like they're both over it.

Her album has grown on me the more I've listened to it. I guess I'm in the minority because I find her extremely talented. She has a fantastic voice and while it wasn't always there, there were moments on Glee when her acting was strong. That said, if we're considering Glee her audition for Funny Girl, she's not right for it. I still think her rendition of Don't Rain on My Parade was great but it kind of went downhill from there.

Here's Murphy's quote:

"We had talked about it for sure. But then I feel like we so many of those songs and so did many of those scenes [on GLEE] that in a weird way, I feel like we did it in some way." He continued, "I don't know, never say never. We've talked about a lot of different things. Maybe. It's not on my docket right now."

That is showbiz for "Yeah, like so many proposed productions, we were in discussions, but now it's probably not going to happen."

So everyone CHILL OUT. The production's unlikely to happen - from the mouth of Ryan Murphy himself.
