"As you can tell, this show has no middle ground. People love it or hate it."
I was very meh about it, there were a lot of parts I did not like, but did enjoy a few things about it. I think it's safe to say people have a lot of strong opinions about it :)
I saw it in DC and hated it. Besides being confusing, I just didn't have the empathy for the characters that I had in Next to Normal. However, I understand it has been improved a lot, I would like to see it again if it didn't cost money.

Not true. I didn't love it, and I certainly didn't hate it. I'd be hard pressed to say which direction I leaned towards. I was definitely in the middle!
I very much enjoyed it. More so than some of the Best Musical nominees. Count me as someone who was mesmerized by the element of surprise. Originality will do that. Sure you can argue about effectiveness and quality, but not knowing where a story is going is a thrilling experience for me.
I found the book to be very smart and witty. Not without its faults certainly but overall relate-able. Idina is a force, and were I a Tony voter, she would hands down get my vote (and I absolutely adored Kelli, Jessie, and Sutton-- each give stunning, pitch perfect performances). Much of the score has grown on me. Not really memorable at first listen (with a few noteworthy exceptions), but after additional listens, there are really only one or two (out of 23) that I don't find enjoyable.
