Aladdin was probably the first to use a big name actor for a voice role when Robin Williams did the voice of Genie although earlier Disney films like Oliver and Company for example had stars doing voices like Billy Joel and Bette Midler.

Don't forget Eva Gabor and Bob Newhart for The Rescuers, and their villain was Geraldine Page.

EDIT: And Eva's singing was done by Robie Lester, and she can also be heard as Jessica/Mrs. Claus in Rankin-Bass's "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town."

Matthew Broderick was dubbed in The Lion King because Marni Nixon needed to pay the rent.

Speaking of Robin Williams and Aladdin, he provided his own singing for the genie and he also voiced the merchant at the beginning. However, the merchant's singing voice was provided by someone else, Bruce Adler. Why didn't Williams also sing for the merchant? Or better yet, why not just let Adler do his speaking voice, too? He was, after all, a twice Tony-nominated actor.

StageManager, not exactly sure why Robin Williams didn't sing that opening, but he did the opening because there were improve bits in there. It was a neat way to get the audience ready for the Genie's irreverent behavior later. I remember as a kid being baffled because I could swear that was Robin Williams speaking but could only find Adler's name attached. I don't have the source but I recall Jason Alexander was slated to sing for Genie rather than Williams.

It's possible Robin Williams declined to sing for that character, he was working at SCALE for the Genie role which is pretty insane given his contribution to the film.

"Aladdin was probably the first to use a big name actor for a voice role when Robin Williams did the voice of Genie although earlier Disney films like Oliver and Company for example had stars doing voices like Billy Joel and Bette Midler."

Actually, you can go back further than that. Jiminy Cricket was voiced by Cliff Edwards who was popular at the time and of course Baloo was voiced by Phil Harris.

Neato Best!

Robin Williams did the voice of Genie as a thank you for Disney under the Touchstone label releasing Good Morning Vietnam but on the condition that his name or image not be used in publicity since he had another film Toys released a month later which Disney broke their promise and he didn't work for them until Joe Roth replaced Jeffrey Katzenberg a few years later and had Disney issue an apology,

It could also be that the Merchant opening scene was added in later, or the choice to have Williams voice the Merchant was made at a later date. I also don't think we ever actually see the Merchant singing, so maybe it's not even supposed to be his voice.

Nope. At the end of "Arabian Nights" you can clearly see the merchant singing the final lines.

I'm just saying, I'm sure they gave him a singing audition. It surprises me that he wouldn't have been able to prove himself capable of handling it.
"

Liza was saying they did not like him for that role, and you seem to think that this is impossible. The producers said they wanted a different sound and they said they did not like him for the singing role... and when they say these things, they are not lying.

In an animated movie, no one can see the person/people voicing the role. That's an aspect that's worth taking advantage of when you have specific expectations for the final product.

If only that advantage could have been utilized in Nice Work If You Can Get It... devil

(Obviously, not a fan of Broderick's singing)

Simba, did you really just resurrect a 4 year old thread to beat a dead horse?

It’s his voice, so maybe he felt the need to hear it again.

Resurrecting a 4 1/2 year old thread and thinking people would still want to discuss it is the very definition of too much time on one's hands.

Robin Williams voices the merchant’s speaking sections because the merchant and the genie are the same character, although the reveal was eventually cut from the first movie. He didn’t do the singing voice because he didn’t have the sound they wanted for that song, same as all the others.

They did? I'm pretty sure Angela Lansbury sang her parts of "Be Our Guest", "Something There", and "Beauty and the Beast". She obviously didn't sing the pop version they released for the radio.

Ah! I was just thinking about Beauty and the Beast. I didn't know she was dubbed in another film.
