Does she have any theatre training or experience?

Oh feck.

And Littleshop, at least Carrie could properly sing the score. Carly Jepsen has proven time and time again that without the aid of all them recording studio doohickeys, her voice is nowhere near as strong live as it appears to be on a recording.

This Weisslers must be jealous of this stunt casting. This is one of the more absurd casting decisions outside of whatever's going on at the Ambassador I've seen in a while.

I have a sneaking suspicion she'll be terrible and she won't sell any tickets. Does anyone really care about a one hit wonder who hasn't shown much talent?

Then again, maybe I'll be surprised. But I don't think I will be.

If you dig into her past, she was a highly trained singer performing with various folk ensembles when she auditioned for Canadian Idol in 2006 or 2007. I don't know why she wound up in bubble gum pop. It doesn't suit her. I don't know if she has any acting experience or if her voice will even suit the material, but she can sing.

Give the poor girl a chance. What is WITH you nasty horrible people???? Classless? Really?

She studied musical theatre before being on Canadian Idol.

She went to the Canadian College of the Performing Arts, which is one of the best in the country! She has musical theatre training!

She may surprise, but who knows.

As cautiously optimistic as I always am, I just can't. Why not close with dignity?

"It was fun. I was actually in musical theater when I was in high school. I played Little Orphan Annie and Dorothy in "The Wizard of Oz" and Sandy in "Grease." And I never thought I would get to bring musical theater back into my pop music career. So when they're like 'You get to be Ariel!' I was like, 'I get to? I get to be in a musical?' They're like 'No, it's just one song.' And I'm like, "I get to be in a musical!" So I totally like skipped to the studio and let my theatrical side come out."

And put up to 200 people out of work? I am sure they will appreciate you holding their place in the unemployment line on a cold January morning. Will you be there to hold their places in line or you will you be the one who comes by with pay it forward cups of coffee to keep them warm or will you be at home wrapped in your snuggie on your sofa cuddling with your cat and a warm mug of hot chocolate?

I have no opinion of her but I can't imagine this will get people to the show. She had one popular song over a year ago and isn't exactly a household name people will flock to see.

Of all the people who could have replaced Laura, I wonder why they chose her? It seems completely out of left field.

And as for her being hired to sell tickets, I know a lot of people who would be seriously discouraged to see a show starring her, regardless of her talent or capability.

I just wish they'd been smarter about their stunt casting to avoid this huge backlash from theatre fans. A wiser decision would have been to cast someone who could draw both tourists/a general demographic as well as appease theatre fans. Someone like Anna Kendrick, who we at least know has MT experience, or even Kristen Bell, who would have brought in the Frozen fanbase (especially since Santino was also in the movie), but still has an MT degree.

Carly is a great singer, and very charismatic, I guess I will have to see this!

Everyone who thinks she's good should YouTube a live performance of "Call Me Maybe" and see if you really think she can sing "My Own Little Corner." And the fact that she went to a performing arts high school or was in some musicals means nothing. I think they're going more for a "sure, I'll see this because I just can't believe it" over "wow, she'll be so good!"

I'm not familiar with this person, except for that one song. It appears she does have musical theatre training. There are quite a number of people who are gnashing their teeth about this casting. Some people get a great deal of satisfaction in "dissecting" a casting change, even before the poor girl has has a chance to perform. Since this is her Broadway debut, she'll need some time to "get her feet wet." But the producers obviously think she will be able to do justice to the role. "Cinderella" needs to do whatever it takes to improve their box office figures. Best of luck to the newest Cinderella.

I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)

I don't pretend to understand the business side of Broadway but it seems to me that Cinderella would be a show that could stand alone without stunt casting. It's a familiar, family friendly title. Does it really need whatever bump Mrs. Jepsen can deliver?

Well, congrats to Cinderella for being the first show to make my jaw drop and swear with a casting notice. This is so stupid, and it actually makes me really frustrated

"An announcement is forthcoming that Lance Bass will be the new prince."

At this point, I can't tell if this is a joke or inside info.

Anyone have a link to a video of Carly singing something similar to Rodgers & Hammerstein *live*?

According to Facebook, a woman who works at the Broadway Theatre claims that a Broadway actor will replace Santino.

...not sure how true that is.
