Aloha Mr. Shaiman! Just wanted to welcome you to the board and say congrats on your success. It can get a bit rough around here so watch out, and don't let anyone scare you away!
When I read your posts I am reminded of a quote that states (paraphrasing) "some considered him a horses ass and then he opened his mouth and removed all doubt."
I am pleased to read Mr. Shaiman's eloquent posts on these boards, especially when it is to dispel myth and rumour. I also think that despite your (BOB) blatant hatred of his show, he answered your questions with grace and poise - something most of us might not bother with.
So now let me turn the tables on YOU, BOB.. what makes YOU qualified to judge theater. Tell us, if you will how you would respond to :the massive number of movies being turned into musicals (Rocky, Legally Blonde, etc)?"
Is there a musical idea that you have that you think really stretches the boundaries of musical theater and advances the art form?
To quote Mr. Shaiman.. put your money where your mouth is. So to speak.

Jack42- what makes any of us qualified to judge theater? This is a message board isn't it?
I think I just said in the last post the way I feel about the massive amount of movies being turned into musicals...or did you miss that.
"Is there a musical idea that you have that you think really stretches the boundaries of musical theater and advances the art form?"- I merely asked him a question and he gave me a very straightfoward answer. That's all that I asked for and I got what I wanted. I don't think it is to much to ask that the theater I see be new, intriguing, never before seen work that pushes the boundaries and tries to offer something new to be considered. Welcome Sir! Hate to say I'm not a huge devotee of your biggest success, but I do appreciate your work, and I appreciate the fact that that show is so much fun. May your future endeavours be grandious still. And once again welcome!

Whoa........ I am shocked. Never in my wildest dreams could I imagine that there would be a way for ME, the little dreamer girl from Ohio, to talk to Marc Shaiman, or any other Broadway uhh "affiliated" people? Is that right? lol This is crazy for me!!
The end does justify the means and on Broadway everything is a risk. Even revivals, revisals and shows based on "safe" material.
I am sure others might have more examples - but WHO would have thought that the horrible camp movie Little Shop Of Horrors when musicalized would become one of the most beloved shows across the country? And then turned back around and made into a popular movie?
Theater can server many purposes. Not every experience has to break new ground. Sometimes people just want to sit back and forget about everything else and be entertained for a couple of hours.
As cynical as it is to remember - Broadway is still a business (as we all know) and so is Hollywood - and it's an endless debate that goes around in circles... What feeds what. Are certain types of movies and musicals being made because that's what the audience is asking for, or are they being produced and creating the audience. It's both.
...and believe me, BOB - you are transparent. There isn't a person on this board that doesn't see right through you and your "supposed" legitimate questions for Mr. Shaiman. Go ahead and argue with me, but your posts speak for themselves on this thread and others....

Say what you will Jack but my questions in the original post were asked with the utmost respect.
And South Park Movie was never a live production...unless I missed it.
Oh and also- I don't believe I asked you any of these questions. I've heard enough from people on this board about these topics. I was asking HIS opinion.

"Say what you will Jack but my questions in the original post were asked with the utmost respect."
I did. And I'll state it again. Your "agenda" is transparent
"And South Park Movie was never a live production...unless I missed it."
Right. Hence the word MOVIE. Look - mince words all you want BOB - we (ok I.. ME.. JACK) knows that you aren't a fan of Shaiman's work. And that's all fine and dandy. Let's not pretend. I wasn't implying that South Park was a theatrical experience, but that it was a musical. A musical that broke new ground and was SMART. And clearly that is/was one of your "issues" with Hairspray....

I want to wish Mr. Shaiman and Billy Crystal great success in their version of THE ODD COUPLE, but would anyone here be interested in seeing me and Albin star in a production of THE SUNSHINE BOYS?
Would anyone here be interested in seeing me and broadwayguy2 star in a production of "Dude, Where's My Car?"

Hey you wild kids (of all ages) this will really surprise y'all
I'd rather debate a BestOfBroadway, who wears his anger on his sleeve than a King Stevos (who I understand is hot!) who couldn't even bring himself to write a 2 sentence post without chiming in about his opinion of what he considers my "biggest" success
that's what I've been mostly trying to say here folks...why must everyone here be so eager to share their negative thoughts. What ever happened to manners and civility...wait a second, now I'm ripping off Fred Ebb!
I was actually gonna post into good old Broadway.Com when HAIRSPRAY was out-of-town in Seattle, to share how glorious it was to see it blossoming, to share what it felt like to be a lover of Musical Comedy getting to see his most fantastic dreams come true...but I didn't, cause I knew it would just be a chance for some to find something negative about my posting at all, i.e. "Just trying to grease the pan for it's opening" blah, blah, blah
ENJOY theatre!! And try to learn that even with a computer screen between you and the world, it's always best to get to know someone before you "confide" to them (in a public forum) your likes and dislikes...
and don't worry 'bout me...(now this is gonna really piss of some...here goes) The joy most get from HAIRSPRAY sincerely only makes me feel bad for those who don't enjoy it...I have never known the contentment it has given me and I am profoundly grateful
It is always nice, when people you admire enormously for their talent, prove that they are also kind, honest, humble and approachable despite their success. Can you name someone else, from the Broadway professionals, who took some time to communicate with this board which supports Broadway 24/7 ? Mr. Shaiman, thanks for making your fans proud of you once again.
I like your comment on manners, Sir. Call me old-fashioned, but manners and a great personality are what impresses me more than anything.

Maybe you should make some of your french fries for the "family".

Mr. Shaiman has hit on a topic some of us have been trying to stress. So many of you have such negative things to say about everything. If you think a post is pointless, you'll say it, and you'll make sure we all hear it and take offense to it.
Like I've said repeatedly, this is a message board where theater lovers should get together and friendly discuss theater, not a place online where people should jump on other people's mistakes and ridicule them for their own enjoyment.
It sounds like I'm kissing ass here, but a lot of you know about how I feel about the whole negativity disease on this board.

First of all -- Welcome to the boards Marc :) It's a pleasure to have you here!
Second of all -- no, you're not the first broadway professional to post on a broadway message board... I actually met one of my very best broadway friends through one of the message boards I post to!
Also, yes, negativity tends to over-run the board sometimes, and I'm guilty of it myself -- *cough* Melanie Griffith in Chicago *cough*. But I think honestly, everyone here is just really overzealous about what they love; And that's wonderful. Though sometimes it can escalate into something more, hence an argument. I think too the arguments are more easily brewed here due to the VAST age group we have posting. Not making excuses or saying it's acceptable at all, but it *does* make it more difficult. I'll admit to having taken tiny hiatus's from various boards for the exact same reason.
Anyway -- before I go off onto a huge tanget as I so often do....
Welcome again Marc! Happy posting
