Rogerdellibovi said: "Just a curious question for those who support degendering the categories. Would that mean only two performances are given Tonys per season? Like on lead and one featured? And how many nominations in a typical season would go to each of those categories?"

I know the DC area "Helen Hayes" awards have decided to go gender inclusive, starting this year by renaming all the performer awards to Outstanding Lead Performer and Outstanding Supporting Performer in each category. There will be 10 nominations  and two winners in each category so that the number of awards given will be the same as past years. I know several other areas have done the same, I wonder if the Tonys ever will.

Hmm. I like that idea. But I can see people being up in arms if 2 guys win.

BroadwayWorld.com has posted an article that includes audio snippets of the 5 plays nominated for Best Original Score. Is there a front-runner? Will ''A Christmas Carol'' win because voters will assume it has the most music?

Meantime, it's been a month (Oct. 15) since the Tony nominations were first announced. Does it seem odd that no date still has been announced for the awards itself? Are there any Tony voters here? Has the voting begun?

This is all so weird to me. I don’t really follow sports, but a lot of college football games are being cancelled because of Covid. So if you win the season, but didn’t play all your games does it even count?

That’s how I feel about the Tony awards. Only Warren deserves to win, IMO. The rest is a wash.

Nope, all the people nominated deserved it. Their hard work deserves to be recognized.

I think an article stated this was happening in mid December? So, like a month from now.

Unless it has just happened, no. Is any of this odd? This is 2020; odd would be something not odd. They are figuring out what to do, in uncharted territory and with new constituencies to be addressed. Suffice it to say that everyone is not of a singular mind on any of this. Also, in case you haven't noticed, the country appears right smack in the middle of a second wave and New York has no interest in inviting anyone to bring their diseases into this comparatively under control environment. So let me ask you this: if the decision were up to you and you were told that the best we can do is some sort of zoom ceremony, what would you be doing right now that isn't "odd"?

@Sutton, I think any article we may have seen back in the day was conjecturing, not stating, a date. I suspect that no one thinks that date now (and to me it would be kinda wacky to do it the week before Christmas but what do I know...)

I'm thinking this happens in January. The TV schedule is too crowded in December. JAGGED may film their performance next week as they will also be filming their performance for the Thanksgiving parade.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

I don’t think this is being televised, is it? Unless I missed something.

It's believe to be televised at some point.

It depends how you define televised. If you mean broadcast, then no, there is no indication of that. If you mean streamed in a way that you can cast to your television set, then yes.

The rumored date that folks were discussing when the nominations were announced was December 6th. But if that was the case, voting would need to be underway right now (I doubt they would want that to continue into Thanksgiving week). I have not heard of any Tony voters actually filling out online ballots yet, though their "portals" were due to be completed well before the nomination announcement. Has anyone heard from Tony voters on if they are actually voting yet? I have not.

It is incredibly bizarre how they are keeping everything in the dark. Obviously its a weird year, but they could be getting some publicity and are missing out on entire news cycles. The Tonys could be a catalyst for raising money for the arts, or the save or stages bill, or at the very least getting Broadway back in the news to let the general public know its not dead. With a vaccine now on the horizon, wouldn't it be nice to remind folks that Broadway will be coming back at some point? Instead...radio silence.

Just a theory but could this delay be related to making some kind of deal with the union as well as a small sampling of actors both from nominated shows as well as already running productions to get into their spaces to record performances for the broadcast?

Not talking huge musical production numbers here but could surely see something like a slightly reblocked socially distanced "Come What May" to represent Moulin Rouge or something like "Wait for It" from Hamilton is already a social distanced number really. Numbers that need not utilize a lot of the cast and not put them in covid risky situations.

But with union safety as well as cast members spread to the four winds by this point with those that opted to leave the city to quarantine elsewhere, they might be waiting to set a date until they get all the safety measure ironed for who will perform and when they will meet to record the performance itself.

Not to mention with it looking like the nation is heading back into lockdowns, plans they lay out to do these things could end up altered as well.

I think they don't want to set a date until they know, for CERTAIN, that they will have something to show on that date that is more then just a zoom call of people in their houses reading names. The Tonys are a marketing tool and they will want to present something grand enough that will tempt people to return to Broadway as soon as they possibly can.

Date for Tony Awards ceremony remains uncertain per Charlotte St. Martin.

Nor would we expect there to be. The awards are going to happen once there is a reopening date. The League has failed the PR test on this subject, but the intention is clear if you go look for it.

This whole thing just seems so misguided. The awards are a commercial for theater and there’s nothing to advertise right now. When shows (even a couple) have the go-ahead to start getting back to work then they can have the awards and have something to celebrate/advertise. It really wouldn’t surprise me if they happened at the normal May/June time, which would also keep them on schedule for the same time in 2022.

Sutton Ross said: "Man, they really f*cked this entire thing up which is so unfortunate for the nominees."

How did they f*ck it up, though? As already stated, these award shows are purely for advertising and promotional purposes. It does no good to currently promote something that is not attainable.
In my opinion, waiting until there is some legitimate progress related to COVID-19 shutdowns to air something like this makes the most sense. Usually the point of the performances is to gain attention and hopefully see a box office boost after the fact...so why put money and time into something when we don’t know when people would actually be able to see it? It’s like putting out a trailer for a movie that isn’t finished filming and has no premier date.

Hell, make it the grand announcement of reopening Broadway is that works.

I am big. It’s the REVIVALS that got small.

Really depends when Broadway is given the go ahead to reopen. Then I think we get a date for when the Tony Awards happen.

Um, because they said it will happen in the Fall, then December, now it's Winter/Spring with no date announced. That's how. They knew they had nothing to advertise when they decided to proceed with them, so they should have just had them already.

"Misguided" is a subset of mismanaged. The problem is that the person in charge is clueless, and the left hand does not know what the right hand is doing. The initial wrong path was the product of a mistakenly rosy PR-style optimism, what in other contexts we call aspirational. I agree about the likelihood of having it in the normal time slot. The problem with just having them already is that someone has to pay to make that happen and St Martin did not bother to ask the people who matter before having her "committee" (she adores committees, which is a red flag in itself) make an announcement.
