#1BWW March Madness results... final!
Posted: 3/3/08 at 11:03am

THE TOURNAMENT IS COMPLETE.

Congratulations to Ragtime, BWWers' favorite Broadway musical of the nineties!

This post includes all results from the "March Madness" poll tournament, determining BWWers' favorite Broadway musical of the nineties.

FINALS
Ragtime defeated Miss Saigon, 86-32.

SEMIFINALS REPORT
The semifinals are now complete. Not much to say except that, generally speaking, the games were not as close as the quarterfinals. Oh, and the higher-seeded show won both games.

SEMIFINALS RESULTS
Game 1: Miss Saigon defeated Side Show, 53-34.
Game 2: Ragtime defeated Falsettos, 69-16.

QUARTERFINALS REPORT
The quarterfinals are now complete. There were only four games, naturally, so the idea of making a "report" that would sum up the results is a bit silly now; all of the results can be taken in at a glance. Just a couple of things to note:

The games were much closer, as you'd expect. Only the Ragtime/Kiss of the Spider Woman matchup was a blowout. The winners of the other three each got less than 55% of the vote in their respective games. Every vote counts, people!

The higher-seeded team won two of the four games.

None of the Final Four shows won the Best Musical Tony award. Two of them did win Best Score, though.

QUARTERFINALS (aka "Fourth Round," aka "Regional Finals") RESULTS

Game 1: Side Show defeated Beauty and the Beast, 53-45.
Game 2: Miss Saigon defeated Parade, 52-47.
Game 3: Ragtime defeated Kiss of the Spider Woman, 76-19.
Game 4: Falsettos defeated Passion, 38-35.

THIRD ROUND REPORT
The third round is now complete. Of the eight games, the higher-seeded team won only two of them. (Those were the two games involving the only top seeds still alive in the tournament, Beauty and the Beast and Miss Saigon.)

As measured by seeds, Side Show (#11 seed) once again scored the biggest upset, taking down Noise/Funk (#2 seed).

Ragtime got the most votes in its game (89). Its game 5 opponent, Rent, got the most votes of any losing show (50).

Parade had the biggest victory, as measured both by absolute margin of victory (63 votes) and percentage of the vote in its game (97 percent).

Game 7 (where Passion edged The Who's Tommy 36-34) was by far the closest game in the round, and the second-closest game in the entire tournament so far.

Only two of the eight remaining shows won the Tony award for Best Musical; however, the other six were all nominated for that award.

THIRD ROUND RESULTS
Game 1: Beauty and the Beast defeated The Scarlet Pimpernel, 59-20.
Game 2: Side Show defeated Bring in da Noise, Bring in da Funk, 51-9.
Game 3: Miss Saigon defeated Titanic, 60-34.
Game 4: Parade defeated Putting It Together, 65-2.
Game 5: Ragtime defeated Rent, 89-50.
Game 6: Kiss of the Spider Woman defeated Crazy for You, 34-17.
Game 7: Passion defeated The Who's Tommy, 36-34.
Game 8: Falsettos defeated Jekyll & Hyde, 39-15.

SECOND ROUND REPORT
The second round is now complete. Of the 16 games, the higher-seeded team won 11 of them.

One #1 seed (The Lion King) lost, losing to Passion. The other three (Beauty and the Beast, Miss Saigon, Rent) are still playing.

As measured by seeds, there was a three-way tie for biggest upset, as three shows each defeated shows seeded eight places ahead of them:
Game 4: (#11) Side Show defeated (#3) Sunset Boulevard
Game 7: (#10) Putting It Together defeated (#2) Smokey Joe’s Café
Game 8: (#11) Parade defeated (#3) The Will Rogers Follies

Parade and Side Show are also the lowest seeds still playing in the round of 16.

There were no shutouts. The show getting the highest percentage of the vote in its game was Miss Saigon, which got 98.0% of the votes against Cyrano.

Rent got the most votes (81), and had the highest margin of victory (76 more votes than its opponent, Big).

The closest game, as measured both by ballot percentage and absolute margin of victory, came in game 3, where Bring in da Noise, Bring in da Funk got 54.5% of the vote in defeating Aspects of Love, 30-25. Noise/Funk also got the fewest votes of any winning show.

Sunset Boulevard, with 42 votes in game 4, got the most votes of any losing show.

Of the nine shows in the tournament that won the Tony Award for Best Musical, four of them (The Will Rogers Follies, Sunset Boulevard, The Lion King, and Fosse) have been knocked out. By contrast, two shows which are still alive (Jekyll & Hyde and Putting It Together) were not even nominated for Best Musical.

The only composers with more than one show remaining in the tournament are Stephen Sondheim (Passion and Putting It Together) and Frank Wildhorn (Jekyll & Hyde and The Scarlet Pimpernel).

And in case you’re watching the calendar: just like the NCAA men’s basketball tournament from which it derives its name, March Madness will not conclude its final game until Monday, April 7th. (However, the only games posted after March 31st will be the semifinals and the finals, so the board-clogging, such as it is, should end when March does.)

SECOND ROUND RESULTS
Game 1: Beauty and the Beast defeated Buddy, 50-4.
Game 2: The Scarlet Pimpernel defeated Blood Brothers, 44-25.
Game 3: Bring in da Noise, Bring in da Funk defeated Aspects of Love, 30-25.
Game 4: Side Show defeated Sunset Boulevard, 63-42.
Game 5: Miss Saigon defeated Cyrano, 50-1.
Game 6: Titanic defeated Victor/Victoria, 49-21.

Game 8: Parade defeated The Will Rogers Follies, 65-2.
Game 9: Rent defeated Big, 81-5.
Game 10: Ragtime defeated The Secret Garden, 80-23.
Game 11: Crazy for You defeated Swing!, 31-2.
Game 12: Kiss of the Spider Woman defeated Triumph of Love, 33-1.
Game 13: Passion defeated The Lion King, 56-41.
Game 14: The Who's Tommy defeated Steel Pier, 37-23.
Game 15: Jekyll & Hyde defeated The Life, 43-32.
Game 16: Falsettos defeated My Favorite Year, 35-7.

FIRST ROUND REPORT
The first round is now complete. Of the 32 games, the higher-seeded show won 25 of them. (Remember, seedings are determined by the length of the Broadway run of the show.) As measured by seedings, the biggest upset was My Favorite Year, seeded 14th in its region, knocking off third-seeded Fosse.

Ragtime got the most votes in its game (65), and also had the highest margin of victory (winning by 64 votes over The Civil War).

Five of the 32 games were shutouts. Juan Darien, Shogun, Ain’t Broadway Grand, Play On!, and Swinging on a Star each received no votes.

Buddy got the fewest votes of any winning show, winning by 7-3 over Kat and the Kings.

Once on This Island got the most votes of any losing show, losing 44-39 to Side Show.

The closest game involved a one-vote margin of victory, with The Will Rogers Follies edging out Marie Christine by a 20-19 score.

How about one for the 60's or one just for flops?

Another possibility is one pitting classics against each other.

You're getting the idea, Mr. Roxy... I'd like to do this sort of thing every year (but only once a year; March is special that way).

I chose "nineties Broadway musicals" because I was sure that I could get the entire bracket together by myself without too much controversy. There were only 72 musicals premiering on Broadway in the nineties, so once I decided that all of the original book musicals made the cut, it was pretty easy.

The topics you mentioned, though... just deciding which 64 entrants make the tournament could take all year. But, hey, we have all year! If you want to propose some brackets for those, we might get a discussion thread going vis-a-vis BWW March Madness 2009. (We might want to wait until the current tournament is done, though. This whole March Madness thing may take off, or everyone may get bored with it before the first round is even over. Who knows?)

Bandit964: I thought about doing the parenthetical-seeding thing, like they always do during the NCAA tournament, but I decided that that might influence the voting. I thought that the voters should consider only the shows themselves, and not how successful they were.

However, I did post the full seedings for all 64 shows back at the start of the tournament, if you're curious. There's a thread that I started in the last few days of February with the info:
