I think March Madness is great. 64 entries, single-elimination, knock ‘em out. But why should it be limited to basketball? This is BroadwayWorld, after all.

So, for no good reason except that it’s March, I’m going to run... the first annual March Madness opinion tournament! The topic this time: Favorite Broadway Musical of the Nineties. (And yes, I know there was a Best Show of the Nineties thread, but it was over three years ago, and it included plays and off-Broadway stuff, etc. etc.)

Here’s how it works: I’ve picked 64 musicals which had their Broadway premieres during the nineties (January 1990 through December 1999). I ranked (seeded) them by length of run, and divided them somewhat arbitrarily into four “regions.” Thus is created a 64-team bracket, just like in the basketball world.

How is each “game” played? I’ll create a thread listing the two musicals involved, and ask you which one you like better. For example: which musical do you like better, The Scarlet Pimpernel or The Capeman? (That’s going to be an actual first-round matchup, by the way.) You then cast your vote, either by commenting to the thread or by PMing me. In the initial post, I’ll list a voting deadline, which will generally be at least two days after I post it. Votes received after the deadline may or may not be counted, depending on what sort of mood I’m in. The musical with the most votes wins. I’ll announce each game’s winner at the end of its thread.

I’ll try not to have more than four games running simultaneously, to avoid totally monopolizing the board, and to minimize confusion (especially mine).

If someone votes more than once, I won’t count any of those votes... if I notice it.

I ask that you vote honestly, or at least plausibly. If you don’t know either of the musicals involved in a particular game, you probably shouldn’t vote in that game. If you know one of the musicals but not the other, I’ll leave it to your judgment. I’ll also leave it to your judgment on whether you choose to vote based on incomplete information about a particular show (cast albums, heard a song or two, read a review once...).

As to whether you choose to vote your honest opinion or a silly one, that’s entirely up to you. If the votes tell me that you generally liked The Best Little Whorehouse Goes Public more than Rent, hey, that’s how the votes came down. I believe that this whole project will be more interesting and entertaining if everyone votes their honest opinion... but I’m willing to be wrong about that.

A separate post will show the shows involved (and not involved), just to make sure I didn’t leave any out. According to ibdb.com, there were 72 musicals that premiered in the nineties, so I only had to keep eight out of the big dance.

The tourney will begin on March 1st. Fire up your memories!

You should look at using a free web polling service like http://www.easy-poll.com/ where you could set up each round of voting and have the results tallied rather easily. It would reduce clutter on the board immeasurably. Then you could keep the posts on the board specifically related to results and new rounds.

My favorite part: Votes received after the deadline may or may not be counted, depending on what sort of mood I’m in. re: Announcing the March Madness Poll Tournament - Favorite Musical of the

This sounds like it could be fun, actually.

Question, is this a question of favorites, or of quality. I think that favorites makes it MUCH more interesting, you never know what you're gonna get. When it's a question og quality, you always get a fairly predictable outcome.

PLEASE! Do not post anything negative or dramatic! DidYouReallyHearMe has LOST the ability to ignore such posts and he will comment! Please, help him.

OurTime: Thanks for the tip. Even so, I'll try the first batch of games directly here on the board and see how it goes. (I can always shift subsequent games to another location.) The hope is that people's votes will obviate the need for me to BUMP the game message all the time, as votes will naturally keep the thread on the front page for the duration of each game. And I do hope that limiting the number of active games to four will reduce clutter. We'll see.

Kasie: Yeah, I think Rent is the front-runner, too. Then again, I thought the Patriots were definitely the favorite in the NFL playoffs this season, and we all saw how that turned out.

NotBarker: it's a question of "favorite." This was a deliberate choice, mostly for the reasons you suggest. (Though, if you believe in the philosophical points of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, you could argue that there's no difference between "favorite" and "quality".)

Bumped because I'm starting the actual games now (or in a few minutes, really). Vote well!

City of Angels, alas, isn't in this tournament. It opened in December of 1989, just too early to be included.

Jekyll & Hyde is in. There's another thread I started just to show the seedings, but I can;t find the link right now.

Is there a thread where we can consult the results so far?

Oh heck, I'll just use this thread to do that.

Game 1: Beauty and the Beast defeats Nick & Nora, 28-8.
Game 2: Buddy defeats Kat and the Kings, 7-3.

Etiquette/organization question: Should I post a new entry to this thread to update results, or should I edit a single message in the thread containing all of the results?

How about just a results thread? Might be less confusing.

I suppose you're right. I will no longer post results to this thread. New thread up soon.
