Rachel Zegler to star in 'Hunger Games' prequel  Oct 28 2023, 07:52:56 PM

The novel has a ton of lyrics in it. Zegler's playing a member of the Coveys, who are kind of musical outsiders in the more straight laced District 12 community. They sing, dance, and entertain the miners after long days of work. The songs are key plot points for a lot of the stories being told.

Sondheim/Ives HERE WE ARE @ The Shed  Sep 29 2023, 04:28:51 PM

I've not seen the stageshow, but I have done extensive research on the films. I don't think watching either film will help you understand what's happening in the show (or the films for that matter). The films are absurdist fantasies with a dark sense of humor.

Any updates on "ROOM" ?  Aug 21 2023, 01:03:30 PM

Oh, Nerds. I remember Nerds having a table at NYCC forever ago promoting their upcoming Broadway run.

Hope Room shows up somewhere, but it's hard to bounce back from announcing and canceling a Broadway run.

^That production was at NYTW, I believe - and for those wondering, it was an Ivo Van Hove joint. He did it again with Ruth Wilson in London, which I saw. I believ

There are some productions where it works, and some where it doesn't, just like any other theatrical conceit.

The most effective use I've seen wasn't intermission, but it was preshow. This was Hedda Gabler at the Public with Elizabeth Marvel. If you didn't see this production, it was done with a stage up front and a walkway surrounding the audience. Cast members could enter and exit from the back of the house. The audience was basically trapped inside with Hedda. Marvel

HERE LIES LOVE - Broadway Previews  Jun 24 2023, 11:24:50 PM

I heard the new radio ad a few times on my drive today. They're stressing that the show is ultimately about the people's revolution and Imelda Marcos is not a hero. Doesn't guarantee it reads that way in the actual performance, but it is the intended perspective.

Josh Gad & Andrew Rannells: GUTENBERG and/or THE PRODUCERS revival to Broadway?  May 27 2023, 06:31:43 PM

Gutenberg is an absolute riot with the right casting. I saw a local production a few years ago that had me laughing so hard I was in tears. Great music, too.

GREY HOUSE Previews  May 23 2023, 09:16:48 AM

May 31 is going to have a talkback with the creative team of the show hosted by MatPat. There's a special discount code for the performance: GHMAY31

Cleaning up school versions of Broadway shows  May 18 2023, 12:23:31 PM

The worst change in the licensed Grease School Version is cutting "There Are Worse Things I Could Do." So to get the clean lyrics (regardless of quality), you have to ditch Rizzo's song. If you want your production to have Rizzo's song, then you need to keep the dirty lyrics.

I worked in children's theatres for years. There is an epidemic of just rewriting these scripts every which way to meet the demands of parents and schools. Meanwhile, there is no shortage of

Most suspenseful play you've seen?  Apr 26 2023, 09:14:11 PM

I'd agree with The Pillowman.

I'm also going to throw out Mr. Burns, a Post-Electric Play. The first act, specifically, is so suspenseful as the concept for the show gets set up for the absurdity of act II and III.

Limited series revival of THE FULL MONTY film set for Disney+  Mar 29 2022, 04:05:53 PM

Other countries have more mature content on Disney+. The US is the only version that is designed to be family friendly for every entry.

Taylor Dayne in Aida  Jul 5 2021, 09:16:38 PM

Taylor sounded wonderful on the score. Her acting wasn't as good, but you could forgive it with how wonderfully she sang.

Question: Were There Major Changes Made to IN MY LIFE (2005) During Previews?  Jul 3 2021, 04:45:29 AM

There was so much off about this show that no amount of changes in previews could've saved it. Let's say they overhauled the book: the music wasn't great. Let's say they rewrote all the songs: the story was still awful. Rewrite both and you have a completely different show. The cast was fine, but it's hard to judge what they were doing with something so poorly conceived from the ground up.

A couple lines were changed here and there, but it didn't really cha

Video games on the theatre stage  May 13 2021, 04:35:04 AM

The Tarazuka Revue in Japan have done 3 licensed Phoenix Wright musicals. The first two have DVDs available and all three have cast recordings.

There's a whole genre of anime/manga/video game musical adaptations in Japan referred to as 2.5D that really gained a lot of traction in the past decade. They're musicals adapted from 2D mediums in Japanese pop culture. Most are anime or manga, but a few are more influenced by video games. It's pretty fascinating to dig into.<

Ride the Cyclone - Cast Recording + Transfer?  May 7 2021, 02:51:34 PM

The recording is very good. The bits of scenes and Karnak narration provide a pretty clear context for the songs. The cast sounds great. This was my first time getting to hear the changes to the score since the off-Broadway run and I really liked them. It is very produced, so it feels more like a pop album than a cast recording, but that's not the worst direction to take this show.

They're also making a push for traction on TikTok, too. I had to laugh that the algorithm knew to

New High School Theatre Director looking for Guidance  Feb 28 2021, 11:57:48 AM
I have to agree with dramamama. $1500 isn't going to go very far for traditional theatrical lighting.

A lot is going to come down to the space. How can you safely hang the lights? How big is your stage? How many power outlets are there? What's voltage is available? Where is the fuse box for your space? How is everything wired? All of those make a difference in safety and performance. Reach out to people who can actually work with you in person and don't be afraid to get quotes/opinions

HS theater during COVID ideas?  Jan 20 2021, 10:47:38 AM

Safely doing a musical at a high school right now is incredibly difficult. There are companies licensing shows with digital streaming rights, but what it really means for a good product is committing to filming a feature length film over Zoom, with songs recorded individually by actor and mixed together afterwards.

Plays are easier to pull off since the lag isn't as big a factor and the show could potentially be performed live for the stream. I've noticed the straight plays ten

Public Domain Day 2021: "Gatsby" goes free-use  Dec 31 2020, 08:19:26 PM
The source novels for Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and Porgy & Bess also enter public domain in 2021. I won't be surprised to see some copyright tip-toeing around the still-protected adaptations happening real soon.
The Ratatouille Musical is HAPPENING.  Dec 29 2020, 10:21:35 PM
I follow a few of the people involved on TikTok. The songs are longer than they are in the videos. It's all new adaptations and arrangements with a full orchestra. The orchestra recorded the tracks last week.
Plays set in a subway?  Dec 29 2020, 10:18:31 PM
It's another musical, but Metro is that short-lived in America Polish musical about young people deciding to live in the subways tunnels.
