HARMONY previews  Oct 23 2023, 06:20:25 PM

This is not a success except for it's ability to give so many young performers their Bwy debuts.

A marketing dilemma is the Contemp. pic & the name 'Harmony' & Barry Manilows name which could lead audiences to think they are going to a jukebox musical of his songs?

The audience never learns what made this group 'the best entertainers' because we never see any of their actual routines/sketches/comedic style. The first time we see them go over big is wh

Encores! 2023: LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA with Ruthie Ann Miles  Jun 22 2023, 05:11:44 PM

I join the other comments here in regard to having been the orig. & now this one - highly enjoying this special musical both times.

I also, understand the comment about the audience being a little hyper - which really stood out in this show that doesn't go for big production numbers to scream about. But it wasn't just applause at end of numbers, it was laughter & other response that just seemed unfiltered & over the top, as though select people were just unwilling t

Sara Bareilles, Christian Borle, Ashley Park, and Heather Headley to Lead Encores Into The Woods  May 4 2022, 01:57:07 PM

I really enjoyed this at Dress Rehearsal. It is running long but I'm sure that will tighten up. (Start times were also not prompt.) This success will do lots to make up for previous Encores misses. Most inventive use of Giantess boots & Milky White puppets. Jordan Donica was out as Rapunzel's Prince but understudy was very good replacement.

TAKE ME OUT Previews  Mar 31 2022, 06:10:40 PM

I wasn't bored but I wasn't all that thrilled. Never saw it before & don't think I will ever see it again. Maybe if you are a real big baseball fan you might enjoy it more? Maybe it was my seat in the last row of the theater? I didn't follow the story that well. Missed things. Kinda feeling that it wasn't made into a movie because it's just not all that great of a written work.

Ledisi's  ("The Oldest Profession" reaches new heights in this version with this powerhouse) but you just couldn't help feeling that Cy Coleman & this particular musical is just not receiving a fair showing here.

NBC will present ANNIE LIVE! for 2021 holiday season  Dec 6 2021, 11:34:11 AM

The ELEPHANT in the ROOM was the excessive ad breaks which left the LIVE aspect in the dust. Most egregious was the first of 2 airings of the Wendy's Rip-Off of the Radio Show's Boylen Sisters. The 2nd time it was shown was after the fact which would have been the only time it could have been appreciated - but certainly not before. I was happy that they didn't do the 'Together Forever' staging like they did in the Macy's Parade. Here's hoping Andrea McArdle gets an

TROUBLE IN MIND Reviews  Nov 20 2021, 02:06:56 PM

Overrated!

I was deeply disappointed since I believe in the relevance of the subject matter, but just found it an amateurish stinker.

The staging & set are boring & confusing, the story weak & unfocused, the direction banal. Why would an actress playing a domestic scene at home ironing be rehearing all decked out in finery & in high heels? Michael Zegen, the actor playing the stage dir,  is way too young & cliched.

I'm truly sorry that this co

My contribution to the suggestions of Black Theater Artists to grace a few Bwy's marquees is a somewhat radical suggestion of naming a theatre after a famous 'character': Theatre Othello? Zora Neale Hurston could also be a contender? In 1930, she collaborated with Langston Hughes on Mule Bone: A Comedy of Negro Life, a play - & she adapted her anthropological work for the performing arts. Her folk revue, The Great Day, featured authentic African song & dance played the John Golden Theatre in Jan. 1932 & went on to be a two-part production at Rollins College in Central FL, where she was from.  IMHO, I like "The Lena Horne" & "The Geoffrey Holder." Though still active, Chita Rivera is a super suggestion, as well.

Mack & Mabel City Center Encores!  Feb 20 2020, 12:40:05 PM

I went into this only knowing the songs, so what a delight to see it all in context! I had of course heard of Mack Sennett & seen Keystone Cops but never even knew that Mabel Normand was a real actress who had achieved such success or that the story is told as a memory. (Loved the way Mack could present a scene as the way he wished it could have gone - sided with the reality of saying the wrong thing.)

I didn't have a hard time with Mack's somewhat cold character becaus

Mack & Mabel City Center Encores!  Feb 19 2020, 05:26:32 PM

It is WRONG to voice negative opinion here following attendance at an invited dress, Matt Rogers. (I wasn't feeling right about saying that I felt casting a black actor for 'Fatty' Arbuckle didn't come off right - but that was an opinion that could have been derived from mere pre-show press releases.) I wish I had held-off starting the thread now. IMHO there is nothing messy or amateurish happening here. If one really sincerely 'wishes the best for a production' one do

Mack & Mabel City Center Encores!  Feb 18 2020, 11:47:52 PM

Impressive major fully-staged revival Feb 19-23 is directed & choreographed by Josh Rhodes with music direction by Rob Berman. This is a not-to-be-missed event for one week only. It sounds great, looks unlike anything seen in previous Encores productions, & casting is impeccable (pther than a black 'Fatty' Arbuckle.) Let's hear from the Broadway World community here of your experiences with this tuneful Jerry Herman mounting.

Girl from North Country advice  Feb 7 2020, 02:47:29 PM

Southerncakes: Its not the exact same look throughout - but I wouldn't confuse that with interesting direction? Most of it is lit darkly & the crew pull some things up & down & there is one brightly lit # - but the quasi radio show motif is used again & again, where singers use the old vintage looking mic.

Girl from North Country advice  Feb 7 2020, 12:21:25 AM

I was bored BORED bOReD with this. It's pretentious & just downright a poorly constructed show! (I couldn't believe how many times scenes/songs/music just stop midnote & go into another with no artful transition or applause closure!) Thoughtless, unfinished results without attention to musical, choreographic or storytelling detail.

In regards to this thread & some of its previous comments, just because you win a tkt lottery doesn't mean it's free.

Bob & Carol &Ted &Alice (PREVIEWS)  Jan 23 2020, 01:30:10 AM

What a DUD! The person I was with didn't know Vega & thought her an amateur. (Had about half her part memorized & was reading off her notes because she is clearly not connecting with the material.) This is just b-o-r-i-n-g! Sheik needs collaboration w/lyricist. A vague pastiche but not feeling relevant.

Worst Broadway Show of the Decade?  Dec 22 2019, 08:03:24 PM

King Lear Glenda Jackson caused me to think that Shakespeare was an awful playwright. Lightning Thief had me leave at intermission. Hated Farinelli. Don't agree with others choices of If/Then, Mullinger, Beetlejuice or Amazing Grace. Slave Play pissed me off with its anti-white "taking up too much space" stance.

Reading the previous comments here shows a majority response from people who haven't even taken the time to see this play - so I don't think it is achieving as much notable biased rabble-rousing reaction as it strives for?

I found this to be an offensive & insulting piece t

Little Shop Cast Recording  Dec 20 2019, 12:06:04 PM

Glad to hear this score getting some new interpretations.
I don't understand how an actor in a Bwy musical could be called "over-qualified" as a singer? (Earier comment from CatsNYrevival.) Have audiences just always seem the shows women in the past to be carrying the scores vocal heft? Does that mean a singing actor makes the music sound too pretty, too legit. vocally? Also, can an actor have a recording contract that allows some artistic control? It seems like the actress
