Feel stressed when arriving to the theatre?  Apr 24 2024, 12:11:12 PM

I had the most stressful experience I’ve ever had with house staff seeing Six recently. Got to the theater later than I’d usually care for and used the restroom with the two others I was with. As we waited in line, the restroom attendant (already a strange occurrence) loudly announced the men’s room would be going unisex and shut a curtain around the urinals so that the women coming in to use the restroom wouldn’t have to see us and we could have privacy. They were als

OH MARY! Officially Transferring to Lyceum Theatre this Summer - 12 Weeks  Apr 24 2024, 11:06:37 AM

Virtual queue was longer than I expected, but got a ticket for the first Friday without an issue. Love these early preview deals shows are engaging in.

STEREOPHONIC Previews  Apr 22 2024, 07:42:55 PM

I think the producers of this show are pricing more good seats at affordable rates, which is smart of them. Wish more shows had cheap seats in actually solid seating locations like this one does.

The show MIGHT be a mess, I don't know - but come on there is something very special happening withsome of this music. It is just so inspired and pe

Raves and love letters. Exactly what this play deserves. Truly, one of the best things I’ve ever seen. I already can’t wait to see it again.

STEREOPHONIC Previews  Apr 19 2024, 11:12:16 AM

There’s no tracklist yet that I could find.

I don’t have any insight on what the album will actually  be, but my reading of that article was that we’ll be getting fuller versions of the songs we only heard snippets of. We basically hear “Bright” and “Masquerade” in their entirety live, but songs like “Drive”, “Seven Lies”, “East of Eden” (not sure if that’s the official title of that one) we only h

Available digitally May 10th, and physical release June 14th.

“Butler and Adjmi have been collaborating on the play since 2014, exchanging snippets of the play and pieces of songs as they built their work together. But because it isn't a musical, we don't get fully-fledged musical numbers or even all of the songs in their entirety. The album will give audiences a chance to hear some of the songs more fully.”

Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 4/14/24  Apr 18 2024, 11:20:03 AM

I’d rather shows take their time to finish developing and come to Broadway when they’re ready and set up for success, rather than the “Quick! This is our chance!” mentality this season’s producers seem to have. We’re oversaturated wi

Kit Connor and Rachel Zegler to star in ROMEO & JULIET on Broadway?  Apr 16 2024, 08:26:42 AM

If the website is already launched; the actors are following the production’s social media accounts; and they’re posting teasers to their respective socials, I’d imagine an announcement is imminent. Probably today or sometime this week.

Kit Connor and Rachel Zegler to star in ROMEO & JULIET on Broadway?  Apr 16 2024, 08:13:40 AM

The main selling point of this for me is the involvement of Sonya Tayeh and Jack Antonoff. And that tagline. The angsty vibes are strong.

LEMPICKA Reviews  Apr 16 2024, 12:12:44 AM

Frank Rich called the original production of Merrily We Roll Along “a shambles,” for God’s sake.

Given that show’s trajectory from historic flop to commercial success, if Carson Kreitzer and Matt Gould really care about this show as much as they say they do - and I believe they do, truly - may they continue to write and develop and maybe approach this with fresh eyes somewhere down the line.

I sense two things from her take. One is that she’s friends with the creative team and is speaking from the heart regarding a show her friends made that just got negative critical feedback. The other is that artists often feel negative critiques are bullsh*t, but they sure do love praise. If critics had fallen in love with Lempicka, you know damn well everyone involved would be talking about it like they finally got their due.

There is NOTHING wrong with theatrical criticism that is informed and contextualized in a broader conversation about theatre as an art form. Some critics are not very good, just as there are composers and bookwriters that are not very good. Art is subjective, sure, but it doesn’t exist in a vacuum. It’s open for critique and assessment just as much as it’s open for unabashed enjoyment.

Kit Connor and Rachel Zegler to star in ROMEO & JULIET on Broadway?  Apr 15 2024, 02:56:14 PM

Sam Gold is one of the most wildly inconsistent directors working today, so there’s no way to predict how this will go if it pans out. He doesn’t have a distinct directing style I’ve ever been able to decipher and his work with actors seems more related to their innate talent than his own ability to conjure a good performance.

Kit Connor and Rachel Zegler to star in ROMEO & JULIET on Broadway?  Apr 15 2024, 02:22:22 PM

A combination of factors lead me to believe Kit and Rachel aren’t connected to the A.R.T. production:

  1. Reps for A.R.T. told BWW that no announcement was forthcoming, which is a strange thing to say if your two leads just loosely announced it in tandem on their own social media pages; and
  2. I was told explicitly that they were coming to Broadway in a production directed by Sam Gold.

Now, my source could be lying or just misinformed, but crazier things have hap

Kit Connor, Rachel Zegler to star in Sam Gold-directed ROMEO + JULIET on Broadway, Fall 2024  Apr 15 2024, 02:03:27 PM

Starting a new thread since this is likely not related to Diane Paulus’s A.R.T. production after all. Got a tip that this actually is a production coming directly to Broadway, and that it’s being directed by (yawn) Sam Gold.

Battle of the avant-garde deconstructed R&J’s, I guess.

EDIT - Confirmed, opening Fall 2024: https://romeoandjulietnyc.com/

Paulus to helm ROMEO & JULIET at ART this fall  Apr 15 2024, 12:41:31 PM

I can say with 99.99% certainty, without any insider knowledge, that Baz Luhrmann is not directing another adaptation of R&J. That is so absurd. Begging folks to use some critical thinking here.

Paulus to helm ROMEO & JULIET at ART this fall  Apr 15 2024, 12:31:58 PM

I have to wonder if Diane is sitting over at A.R.T. getting big mad that Papermill’s Gatsby and now Jamie Lloyd’s R&J are beating her theater to the punch. I’m struggling to remember the last transfer A.R.T. had to Broadway (was it Great Comet??), but this seems to be the first time they’ve had to compete for that trajectory.

And again, this could be totally unrelated to the A.R.T. production, but I highly doubt there’s a movie in development and no co

Paulus to helm ROMEO & JULIET at ART this fall  Apr 15 2024, 12:17:33 PM

This may not be related at all, but Kit Connor and Rachel Zegler just posted on their respective Instagrams “R + J” with the location tag “Verona”.

Rachel: https://www.instagram.com/p/C5yY-WFO8N1/?igsh=MXZlcnQ5M3lpcm1vNA==

They feel like slightly too big of stars to do a regional production of Romeo and Juliet, but it’s possible A.R.T. is planning on this being their tentpole production next season with its eye on Broadway.

LEMPICKA Reviews  Apr 15 2024, 10:26:59 AM

Any and everything on X should be taken with enough salt to stop your heart cold. Also, the only post I saw “dragging” Sara Holdren is from Michael R. Jackson, who is terminally online and full of resentment and lukewarm takes. His thesis on her review seems to be that critics should stop telling theatre-makers how they could have bettered their own show, and then a short scroll down, he’s crapping on Joker 2 based on his own preconception of what movies should be.
