The BWW Tech Support Thread  Jul 23 2023, 11:00:46 PM

What is it with this insufferable website that auto-refreshes as you’re scrolling down the list of board threads before crashing completely with an error message of:

A problem repeatedly occurred on "https://www.broadwayworld.com/board/"

FIX IT, JESUS!

Walking Out at Intermission - The Thread  May 15 2023, 09:44:52 AM

GoldenGiggery said: "Lastly, the 2022 production of MacBeth is by far the worst thing I’ve ever seen. If you’re going to do Shakespeare on BWay in the 21st century, you’d better have a damn good reason for why. This production didn’t have one, except to showcase Sam Gold’s utter pretentiousness. Ruth Negga was the sole good thing about it, and I’m embarrassed for her, that this had to be her BWay debut. Truly cannot believe this is the show Amber Gray left Hadestown for. #Soup."

I’ve seen so much Shakespeare in my life, even at my nubile age of 36, that I’d only consider future productions for male nudity or feet.

Shout out to Jude Law and Oscar Isaac’s (those underwear cakes!) respective turns in Hamlet.

Long term contracts  Apr 7 2023, 05:32:12 PM

This came immediately to mind:

https://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/01/theater/george-lee-andrews-to-leave-phantom-after-23-years.html

And to a lesser extent, I thought it was pretty cool Jonathan Freeman played Jafar in the film and then in the musical for nearly 8 years (according to Wikipedia).

SOME LIKE IT HOT On Broadway - News & Discussion Thread  Feb 21 2023, 03:26:15 AM

All of the good reviews on here make me want to see the show.

The View and Seth Meyers performances do not.

Chastain stars in A DOLL'S HOUSE On Broadway - P/reviews & News Thread  Feb 16 2023, 05:44:18 AM

Jeffrey Karasarides said: "quizking101 said: "I’m going to be honest - Chastain runs away with the whole show, like a slow moving train wreck before having her “A-Ha” moment that finishes her journey strong and triumphant. Suffice to say she is definitely in the mix for a nomination and will put up a strong fight against McDonald and (very likely) Comer and Warren for the trophy."

Now I'm personally not a huge Jessica Chastain fan.

Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 11/6/22  Nov 10 2022, 12:27:47 AM

So did that Jesse Williams leak kill interest in Take Me Out or is the bigger house just swallowing it up?

To add to the race discussion which I will surely regret doing, but as a minority and an avid theatergoer for almost 20 years (I’m 36) and 500+ Playbills crowding my home, I’ve had to make some cuts on the types of shows I see. This includes most family dramas, anything Shakespeare (I’ve seen them all!), anything war themed, and sadly anything race themed. As an

Constance Wu, Finn Wittrock, Anna Camp to lead North American premiere of 2:22 A GHOST STORY  Nov 4 2022, 07:10:40 PM

Wait. Are we talking about the same show? I saw this in London back in June and I thought it was laughably horrid. Who said there aren’t jump scares? I guess those deafening shrieks after every scene don’t count as jump scares. Happy to all who enjoyed it but this was very amateurish at best.

Audience Rewards redemption for a pittance of points?

Worst case, they need to line the BCEFA flea market trash cans with something.

The 75th Annual TONY Awards!  Jun 14 2022, 01:11:39 AM

Apologies for the late thoughts as I didn’t watch the Tony’s live due to flying back home from a London trip (where I saw 2:22 and it was AWFUL). Anyhoo.

Ariana DeBose

I’m pretty indifferent about her. I saw her in the Hamilton ensemble. And I saw the WSS film. (A friend later reminded me I saw her in Summer, which completely escaped my mind.) I don’t mean to take away from her performance but given that Anita won past Tonys and Oscars, I really think it’s the role that’s so great than the actual actresses performing it. If that makes sense. She was good in the movie but idk if it was amazing, once in a lifetime, can never forget it.

Ok so having said that I LOOOOOOOOOVED HER as host. So present, vibrant, commanding. That opening performance was a marathon. My god. And even though the songs weren’t perfect, she REALLY elevated the material by selling the hell out of them.

Patti LuPone

This will probably ruffle some feathers. I preface by saying I’m a huge Patti fan, with six signed posters on my wall, no less. BUT to have a prepared speech, written in front of you that you are reading from, and to NOT even utter Sondheim’s name…she f#cked up. Especially considering Marianne and Matt did.

Michael R. Jackson

A standing ovation for BEST BOOK??? That surely was a response to being snubbed for Best Score. Glad he took home one of the pair.

Performances

So the best one being…A Girl from the North Country???

Everything else seemed lackluster. I’ve seen ASLoop and even thought to myself, does anyone watching this know what’s going on? Unsure if they set it up when introducing the show. But overall, nothing that made me want to buy tickets. Joaquina was great but what a repetitive song (lyric wise) that feels like a waste of her talents. And don’t get me started on how that song feels like a ripoff of Burn from Hamilton.

SIX was swallowed by that cavernous stage. They should’ve built a boxed stage and dimmed the areas around it to better reflect the size of the Nederlander for them to really pop. What usually feels like fireworks in a shoebox felt like fireworks in a giant stadium. And they still could’ve run out into the extended lip of the stage which would’ve been a nice touch visually and on brand for the show - escape, freedom, reclamation - etc.

Some favorite moments:

1. Billy Crystal’s, “If you like me I’m Billy Crystal. If you’re not so sure, I’m Hugh Jackman” + Hugh’s response.

2. The photo of Sondheim being held during Best Revival acceptance. crying

London -June/July 2022  Jun 7 2022, 04:57:18 PM

I booked my ticket for 2:22 this Friday night and may have time for a show Saturday night. Nothing is jumping out at me but don’t want to miss a hidden gem.

My only criteria is that it’s something unlikely to transfer to Broadway and it isn’t one of the bigger mainstays which I’ve already seen on Broadway.

Any recommendations? Thank you!

Audience Rewards - Merch Redemption  May 24 2022, 02:32:28 AM

Has any one redeemed AR points for a window card? I’m interested but wary of how it ships / whether it will arrive in good, non-creased condition. Paper goods can be tricky to mail. Or, should I just redeem for a t-shirt instead? cheeky

Thanks!

London -June/July 2022  May 23 2022, 07:21:47 PM

Flying over in two weeks and am interested in 2:22.

Any one seen it? A penny for your spoiler free thoughts? Thanks!

Sondheim trivia  May 11 2022, 07:01:48 PM

Hi all,

I’m planning to host a Sondheim trivia night and I think I already got in over my head.

Would you beautiful, intelligent people be so kind to share some Sondheim related questions and answers for me to include?

This would be straight Q&A, no multiple choice.

Thank you so much in advance!

This revival was my first exposure to the play, but FWIW, Jesse Tyler Ferguson's performance didn't read to me as a stereotypical "queen," as much as he was just kind of a dweeb. Less of a Prior Walter, and more of a Rod from Avenue Q (but not repressed).

Glad to read this. Do they do something like the dumb thing in the production I saw where he wants to wear the sports ring, but i

The score remains largely unchanged, except for a few minor lyric changes. There wasn’t a major overhaul of the book or anything but the changes felt purposeful and definitely made the show stronger.

The design elements felt scaled up for Broadway and the direction seemed stronger as well. So while the show didn’t change that
