Update on the Times Square Theatre  May 8 2024, 01:28:30 PM

It is not "beyond a new life". There have been plenty of interested parties with legit, feasible plans for the building. Including the current one. It has just had an unfortunate string of bad luck with tenants. It's a major piece of (very expensive) real estate. Sometimes it takes years to find the right fit for such a property. It is a very common occurrence in the city. Take the 7 or N out to Queens and take a look at the array of vacant buildings littering the streets, some

Update on the Times Square Theatre  May 8 2024, 12:33:50 PM

For the 1000th time....if you raise the theater the loading dock would still be on 42nd St. It doesn't work. Multiple interested parties have looked into making it a Broadway theater. It has been deemed unfeasible every. single. time. It will not now, or ever, be a Broadway theater.

Raising the building is also not an option. It is historically landmarked. And it is one of 7 theater spaces that the city has charged New 42 with revitalizing and finding new life for. The Times Square

Update on the Times Square Theatre  May 8 2024, 11:22:56 AM

Construction is on a bit of a pause right now. I'm told the tenants ran into a bit of a money issue with one of their sources of funding pulling out.

The building is set to house several stores with one larger "flagship" store...but supposedly the business lined up for said flagship is no longer interested, hence some funding dropping out. They are potentially rethinking the main floor layout as there is a chance they might eliminate the flagship space in favor of several

If Stereophonic didn’t transfer…  May 8 2024, 11:12:30 AM

I'd add Michael Imperioli for a potential Featured Actor nomination. It's a big scene chewy role. And since Stereophonic has 3 men in the category, I think Imperioli, Keen, and Esper would be next in line to take their spots.

I was shocked that Francis Benhamou was omitted from featured actress. That monologue was crazy. As for the second woman here, I think perhaps Natalie Gold (Appropriate) or Zenzi Williams (Jaja's) would have made the cut.

And I think you&#

Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 5/5/24  May 7 2024, 02:34:15 PM

Heart of Rock and Roll producers are likely going to push the thing through the end of May most likely, in order to run during the spring road conference. They need those presenters to see the show as that is their actual goal for the musical. I predict it will run through 5/26.

2024 Pulitzer Prize Predictions  May 6 2024, 11:36:01 AM

Since part of the criteria for the Pultizer is depicting American life, plays with a strong message about the current state of our culture can have a leg up here. Something to keep in mind.

I think The Comeuppance is the likeliest choice. But these folks surprise us every year.

Other options: (pray), Wet Brain, Stereophonic, The Ally, Flex, Manahatta, Primary Trust

77th Tony Awards Performance Predictions  May 6 2024, 11:30:47 AM

Last year the Tonys had 4.3 million live viewers. While this number is far behind many pre-pandemic years and behind other awards shows, it is still an excellent advertising opportunity for Broadway productions. Live TV numbers are down across the board, so this is still an incredible amount of people to get in front of at once (and most of that audience are people who would be potential ticket buyers). Plus its a major event that will receive TV and online coverage in the following days, and

Insert name of show : posting closing notices  Apr 30 2024, 12:36:07 PM

I think Heart of Rock and Roll likely announces closing this evening. The only caveat is that they clearly have other plans for this one: it's built for a tour and cruise ships, directly appealing to middle America (I mean the plot...do I follow my dreams of working a great factory job or follow my dreams of playing with my friends in a band?). I think those markets really are their end goal, so there's a chance they throw money into it for a few more weeks if they need to get more ro

2024 Tony Predictions  Apr 29 2024, 06:04:16 PM

Wow, Greg Evans (Deadline) is yet another journalist super strong on Lempicka...and I don't think I buy it. Eden could still get in, and there's a sliver of a chance for score because of the memorable songs. I just don't see it landing anywhere else given the reactions to it.

Evans' article is also full of inaccuracies, often with number of slots per category (he lists 5 shows for Revival of a Musical, for instance). So I'm not taking it too seriously.

I'

Tony Awards Eligibility 2023-2024  Apr 26 2024, 06:22:39 PM

Per this report they are considering Mary Jane a new play

Final Round of Tony Eligibility  Apr 26 2024, 05:32:42 PM

They really said NOTHING about Mary Jane??? Is it a revival or not?

Besides the Uncle Vanya performers this was the other item left that folks were debating...how could they not release anything about it!

2024 Tony Predictions  Apr 25 2024, 01:45:33 PM

Lead Actor in a Play is definitely not a done deal for Strong. I think Stuhlbarg has by far the most physical performance of the bunch. And he does the MOST acting. I think he has the edge. Probably the one win for Patriots.

Featured Actor in a Play is totally up for grabs. One of the Stereophonic guys maybe? Or Corey Stoll, given the strength of Appropriate

2024 Tony Predictions  Apr 25 2024, 11:40:30 AM

Nominators are rescheduled if a main performer is out for their ticketed show. There is no way the producers would allow them to come while Eden is out. And unless they have a conflict, most of the nominators see each production during the press period. Any recent absences will have no effect on whether she receives a nomination or not.

I do think one of the favorites in Lead Actress will be snubbed though. Maybe Eden. Maybe Gayle. There's just so many potentials there. Kelli O'

2024 Outer Critics Circle Nominations & Awards  Apr 24 2024, 10:59:44 AM

MemorableUserName said: "While conceding it's meaningless for the Tonys, Justin Guarini being recognized here is nice to see. He was terrific in a show that otherwise was not."

I thought Justin Guarini and Jennifer Simard were both incredible in Once Upon... Unfortunately they submitted Guarini under lead actor at the Tonys which all but killed any sliver of a chance he had.

2024 Outer Critics Circle Nominations & Awards  Apr 23 2024, 04:43:06 PM

It's absolutely crazy that the OCC has kept their acting categories at 5 nominees after de-gendering them. BUT it does potentially show you who the strongest candidates are. I know, things can and will be slightly different with the Tonys since only about 10 voters nominate the OCC...but still. For instance, I think Kelli O'Hara and Maryann Plunkett being the only 2 women who appeared in Lead Performance in a Musical means they should be formidable heading into Tony noms.

It al

SUFFS Opening Night Critics' Reviews  Apr 19 2024, 01:08:26 AM

Some critics were slightly more muted than I expected, but still great reviews. And with a series of just "so so" reception to musicals this spring, I think it still sits atop the pack for the Tonys.

Illinoise might be the only one left that gets truly rapturous reviews. But Suffs stands an enormous chance of winning Score AND Book. So I just can't see them rewarding Illinoise instead, which isnt original music. Justin Peck would need to win both director and choreography

UNCLE VANYA Previews  Apr 19 2024, 12:39:47 AM

The characters in Uncle Vanya frequently bring up how bored they are...and so was I. This was without a doubt the biggest disappointment of the season for me.

I cannot fathom how the same person who directed the crackling Appropriate also turned in this production. Every single actor is in a completely different show. Pacing draaaaaags along. Especially at the end where I nearly pleaded out loud for the scene to cut to black already and for Astrov to leave. Carrell injects som

LEMPICKA Reviews  Apr 17 2024, 12:58:55 PM

There is a major bug going around and it's reached the theater community. Actors from Suffs and Hell's Kitchen have missed press performances. And I think Eden is not the only person sick in Lempicka. No conspiracy theory needed.

JK Rowling Concerns  Apr 16 2024, 04:43:19 PM

I think the question of separating art from artist, and what will or wont push someone to do that, differs for everyone.

For me it is not so cut and dry. Her rhetoric is absolutely disgusting and it baffles me as to why she spends so much of her waking hours dedicated towards hate. (She is one of the richest people in the world...if I had her money you would never hear a peep out of me as I'd just be vibe-ing on a private island or lounging in my penthouse apartment without a

2024 Tony Awards  Apr 16 2024, 04:02:41 PM

The Tony Awards website has launched their "This Season" section which sorts all the eligible shows from the season into the production category they are competing in. Despite not making any announcement about it (so bizarre), Appropriate is listed under Revival of a Play. So it looks to be official!

https://www.tonyawards.com/this-season/best-revival-of-a-play/

Curiously, Spamalot, How to Dance in Ohio, Doubt, and Prayer for the French Republic have also been added to these pages even though no announcement on eligibility has been made for those shows. Are they about to send a press release....or did someone just straight up forget to make the announcement? It's truly so strange to have waited so long, especially since it seems they might have ruled on these in January.
