THE GREAT GATSBY Opening Night Critics’ Reviews  Apr 26 2024, 10:44:50 PM

Maybe it’s time to give up on GATSBY…for anything but the 1925 classic novel it is.

3 movie adaptations: all critical bombs.

2 Dueling musicals…this and the Florence and the Machine take.

1 Opera that’s basically never been heard from again.

I’m not saying that certain elements didn’t work in previous attempts. I actually like parts of the last two film versions. Maybe it’s possible that Fitzgera

Seeing a show when you're not feeling great  Apr 22 2024, 01:25:42 AM

I flew into New York from Los Angeles specifically to see the revival of FOLLIES, with friends, in 2011. We had a great dinner at Ruth Chris before the show. About 20 minutes into the first act, I started to develop some of the worst indigestion and heartburn I’d ever experienced. In agony, I stayed for the whole show as I didn’t want to leave my friends. After the show, I bravely exchanged pleasantries and made a beeline back to my hotel for a shot of Pepto Bismol&

CABARET at the Kit Kat Club (2024) Opening Night Critics' Reviews  Apr 22 2024, 12:34:04 AM

ErmengardeStopSniveling wrote: “Since then, London has had Cabaret revivals in 2006 and 2012 (both dir Rufus Norris).”

I liked the 2006 revival, but I thought the 2012 production at the Savoy was brilliant.

The Notebook - Original Broadway Cast Recording  Apr 20 2024, 12:46:30 AM

I posted a while back that I’d finally watched the movie after years of avoiding it. It didn’t really do anything for me, but I was glad I watched it as I knew there was a musical version of it coming up.

I really enjoyed the cast album. It’s beautifully executed and I hope it sells and encourages people to see the show or, if they have, to relive it listening to this top-notch recording.

Nicole Scherzinger to star in West End Sunset Boulevard at the Savoy  Mar 25 2024, 09:36:41 PM

inception wrote: “So, what exactly do fans of this show like about it?  From this recording it just seems like a rehash of the film with lousy songs.”

I honestly think, that to get it, you would’ve actually had to have seen the original Broadway PRODUCTION. The opulence of that production was something that we’ll most likely never see again.

Jason Robert Brown, Taylor Mac, Rob Ashford collaborating on MIDNIGHT IN THE GARDEN OF GOOD AND EVIL musical adaptation  Mar 25 2024, 08:58:30 PM

I’ve never seen the movie, but I couldn’t put the book down! It’s what they used to call a real page-turner… It’s well worth your time.

Chita Rivera has died  Jan 30 2024, 03:32:35 PM

I got to work with her and meet her during the run of the NINE revival. I just always thought she’d be here forever… So sad.

Is Thomas Kail still working on Fiddler on the Roof?  Jan 22 2024, 10:31:11 PM

Norman Jewison, who directed FIDDLER ON THE ROOF for the screen, has passed away at age 97.

i mention it as I think it is one of the best Broadway-to-Film adaptations ever. The movie still works and I think it was perfect in its execution. I still watch it every year or so.

STEPHEN SONDHEIM’S OLD FRIENDS recording…  Dec 8 2023, 11:59:25 PM

If there’s a thread on this, I’ve missed it.

This recording of the tribute, from May of 2022, was released digitally today. Is anyone listening?

I’m just a few tracks in and there are definitely ups and downs. I’m thinking/hoping it will even out.

I thought this would be a cast album of the show currently playing in the West End, but that’s not what it is. Would love to hear what others think of it.

Rob,

Thanks for getting all of BWW back within the app…rather than jumping into Safari to view the message boards with iOS.

Streisand Will Release First Memoir this Fall  Nov 8 2023, 05:05:27 AM

I’ve listened to a little over two hours of the audiobook so far. While listening, I’m also following along with the Kindle ebook. I’ve never enjoyed audiobooks over printed or electronic versions of the same work…but this audiobook is absolutely the way to go for this memoir! The audiobook comes across as very conversational and it is peppered with little asides and added tidbits that, while never radically straying from what is on the printed page, make for a more e

Complete Recordings  Oct 6 2023, 03:48:30 AM

There was a complete recording of MAN OF LA MANCHA with the original London cast (Keith Mitchell and Joan Diener). This is not the Jay Records recording from 2000. This was released as a 2-LP set in 1968 by Decca.

It seems to have disappeared; not available digitally anywhere.

First Complete Recording of OKLAHOMA! to be released this September  Sep 15 2023, 03:17:16 AM

Wow! This is a must-own recording. John Wilson’s reputation for projects like this is outstanding. I can’t wait for his complete CAROUSEL.

Notebook Musical coming to Broadway  Sep 11 2023, 10:56:54 PM

After years and years of hearing about this film, I finally watched it earlier this year. When it was over, I thought (to quote Peggy Lee): “Is That All There Is?”

BUT, maybe it will work as a musical. Stranger things have happened…

Has the Off-Topic chat board been removed?

UPDATE: I was able to find it, but it doesn’t show up in the Chat pull-down listing.

Leslie Odom, Jr. sets Broadway return in revival of PURLIE VICTORIOUS, directed by Kenny Leon.  Sep 1 2023, 08:51:20 PM

What a gargantuan missed opportunity! I’m not a big fan of Leslie Odom, Jr., but I’m sure he’ll be just fine in this. Had this been a revival of the musical, it could’ve been his ascendancy to musical leading man (I know there are better words for this… ).

This is like putting Bette Midler in a revival of THE MATCHMAKER…but a least the title confusion wouldn’t exist.
