SWEENEY TODD To Close On May 5, 2024 Mar 12

Dang. I had hoped We'd see one more set of leads on this one (I had my unrealistic hopes for Jinkx Monsoon or Amber Gray). And I had also hoped that Death becomes her would open in the fall, so it would line up with some stuff I wanted to see at the Met, but even this out-of-towner can admit that it's better timing to open in the spring.

Why don’t actors share roles on Broadway? Feb 29

Oddly enough, Linney was nominated for a Best Actress Tony Award and Nixon for Best Featured Actress."
They were nominated for the roles they each played on the production's opening night; so Linney was nominated for Regina and Nixon for Birdie.

Musical or Play for Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman Feb 12

Here me out...Stine and Stone in City of Angels. I don't know if Reynolds has the stamina or vocal skill to actually do eight shows a week, but theoretically, this would be a show that plays to both of their strengths. In my wildest dreams, it might even be a case where they could True West/Little Fox it and swap roles every night.

I don't usually feel this way but I do hope that for the Broadway leg of the tour they throw a little extra money at the set. I don't think they will, but a trap door could do wonders for the fluency of the show.

She should have more dialogue in the scene to establish her character. Even by the end of the show with her additional scene in act two Glinda was the most under developed character."
Unfortunately, that's the script structure to blame; in

Do they even refer to her as Adderperle in the show? What purpose does her character serve if Glinda is now in the scene and sings the song?"

I posted a very negative review of Kimberly Akimbo on YouTube and got a threat to delete it. Dec 16
2023, 07:51:08 PM
Kimberly is a 16 year old being played by a 64 year old actor. Seth is a 16 year old being played by a 20 year old actor. Although the visual of an older body being romantically involved with a younger person is one that is engaged with consciously, neither the characters nor the actors are doing anything inappropriate. Suspend your disbelief, or don't, and in either case there's nothing immoral happening on that stage.

Will Radcliffe get nominated for Merrily Nov 27

He is a STRONG contender for Best supporting actor, less so for lead But it is going to be a hell of a competition this year for the Tonys and anything Sweeping is unlikely.
We're early enough in the season that it's going to be hard to predict what shows yet may materialize, but Revival is almost certainly going to be a bitterly-fought battle between MERRILY and CABARET. TOMMY is also a contender, though I don't think it can withstand the momentum of these two ab

Two different productions of the same show on Broadway? Oct 16
2023, 12:12:49 PM
Not quite two of the same show on broadway, but:
In 1964, When Richard Burton was playing HAMLET on Broadway, a production of the same play was on at the Delacorte (at the time, run by the New York Shakespeare Festival). On opening night of the Delacorte production, their Hamlet, Alfred Ryder, went out of the show with Laryngitis and Burton's understudy Robert Burr, stepped in with three hours notice to save the show. Burton gave curtain speeches Burr's run at the Delacorte enc

Two different productions of the same show on Broadway? Oct 13

There's occasionally been two of the same Shakespeare play playing in NYC but never competitively on Broadway.
I'd be curious if the Met produced La Boheme during the Baz Luhrmann's run on Broadway in 2002/2003...they tend to do it every season. The Met's database, which would be the best source for this, has been offline for weeks.

Groban & Ashford in SWEENEY TODD On Broadway Aug 31

He writes about this decision in Finishing the Hat and makes it sound as if the decision to cut both happened simultaneously. It seems odd to have made the cut after the show was frozen.<
Sondheim's memory does get unreliable in some spots. The Judge's "Johanna" was cut very early in previews, I think perhaps even after the first preview. In an evening of shocks, the Judge whipping himself to an orgasm was perhaps a step too far. However, the tooth-pulling scene remained in. If you search, there is a YouTube video of the original Broadway production. Victor Garber was the first of the principals to leave the cast and he was replaced by Cris Groenendaal. Groenendaal is in this video (either as understudy or permanent replacement, opposite understudy/eventual Johanna replacement Betsy Joslyn), and the tooth-pulling scene is in, so it had to have been filmed sometime after opening. There is also a full audio of opening night, and the tooth-pulling scene is in."
Last night I was watching the South Bank Show documentary on the making of the London production which opened within a year of the Broadway production; there was a argument between Hal Prince and John Aron in regards to cutting some of Pirelli's material. I wonder if the choice was made to make the cut during rehearsals for the London run.
"
Yup! this is basically the case. Neither the original broadway or London productions included the full version of "the Contest" but they were different cuts. The Broadway version cut both of Pirelli's opening verses ("Now signorini, Signore" etc), but retained both of the Shaving and Tooth pulling sequences. ("to shave-a the face...etc". The British production cut the song down further, removing the whole Tooth-pulling sequence, but restoring the introductory verse to the Shaving sequence, and that is basically how the song has remained since.
John Aron's intense argument over the cut is one of my favorite things to have ever been caught on camera, especially Hal's little shrug that boils down to "who does this guy think he is?"
