THE GREAT GATSBY Opening Night Critics’ Reviews  May 5 2024, 10:23:04 AM

Wow. This was…not good. I read reviews and listen to what people say on here, but I go in knowing that my opinion doesn’t always align with those. Unfortunately this was one of those moments where everyone ragging on it is right. The songs after bad, the character/story choices were incomprehensible, and the tone shifts were wild.

We went from a cartoonish ‘I’m going to throw myself behind a fence to avoid Daisy because I’m insecure” Gatsby

77th Tony Awards Performance Predictions  Apr 30 2024, 08:09:46 PM

Said it on another thread, but even though Henry’s story is the most moving part of Illinoise, I’m happy for Man of Steel. It stands on its own and has a beautiful message about our power as humans.

Hell’s Kitchen feels like it’ll definitely be Empire State of Mind as an opening or closing to the show. Outsiders should be Great Expectations, Suffs’ Keep Marching, Cabaret’s Wilkommen (maybe as the opener with Empire as the closer of the evening), Merr

Interesting. That article is from 2012. Wonder if it’s still  on the horizon.

(Insert Name or Show) Was Robbed!  Apr 30 2024, 09:41:33 AM

Genuinely mad about the Roger Bart love when that spot could’ve gone to someone way more deserving in Illinoise. The Tonys don’t respect dance, but apparently they love a bizarrely over the top caricature. Sigh…

NY Pops Gala Honoring Clive Davis  Apr 30 2024, 07:09:36 AM

It’s only sort of Broadway (lots of Broadway talent), but it was a pretty incredible night. Here are my thoughts:

1) Barry Manilow is a legend. I did not enjoy Harmony, but his love of Broadway and his energy at almost 81 makes me want him to get a Tony nod. I know that’s not how it works.

2) Really not a fan of the “Falling” arrangement in Hell’s Kitchen. Bean and Dixon performed it here, and it brought me back to my dislike during the Downtown pro

Drama Desk Nominations ‘24  Apr 29 2024, 11:44:55 AM

Still updating, but already interesting.

Only two broadway musical are nominating for best musical and they’re Illinoise and The Outsiders. Those are the two I’m between for the Tony also.

MUFASA: THE LION KING, featuring songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda & directed by Barry Jenkins, in theaters Christmas 2024  Apr 29 2024, 09:44:12 AM

Blue Ivy as Simba and Nala’s daughter 🙄. I like Barry Jenkins as director, but honestly, after the fiasco that was the addition of “Scuttlebutt” to The Little Mermaid, I’m worried about Lin’s work here. He’s obviously supremely talented, but I’m not really a fan of his melodies/beats. Lyrically, he’s better.

What does “soon” mean? This week? This month?

2024 Tony Predictions  Apr 28 2024, 04:32:30 AM

Now that I think about it, I’d really love to have Heart of RnR get some love on Tuesday. It won’t because it’s cornier than the rest (excuse the Shucked callback), but it has heart and it’s a ton of fun. Plus the show really needs it. I’m going to keep my fingers crossed.

I, too, heard several people say as I exited the theater that said "I'm not sure what exactly happened" or "what was this about?". So maybe their limited run will be enough unless it ends up winning the Tony. Maybe they'll look to transfer this to a smaller theater in September and have it run for six more months?"

ILLINOISE Reviews  Apr 27 2024, 04:23:43 PM

I have many thoughts, so bear with me. I saw this almost a year ago at Bard, and the memory isn’t what it should be, but I’ll do my best. The book of this worked much better for me now than it did a year ago. I’m not sure if that’s because I knew what to expect or because there have been actual revisions. I was still moved to tears, but not as many because, again, I knew what was coming, and I’ve been ruminating on it for a year.

Daniel Radcliffe - Merrily We Roll Along

Joshua Boone (maybe Brent Comer) - Outsiders

Ricky Ubeda and/or Ben Cook - Illinoise

Brandon Victor Dixon - Hell's Kitchen

Conrad Ricamora - Here Lies Love

Ethan Slater - Spamalot

Are these definitely supposed to come out tonight? Maybe because it’s so rushed, the critics are watching now and have to get home to write their reviews - like the olden days.

Is this accurate? Do you need program notes to understand the plot of this show? Then again, they had program notes to help audiences with the pl

I wouldn’t count The Outsiders out. People love the fresh, young energy it’s bringing to Broadway.

The Avett Brothers’ SWEPT AWAY musical at Arena Stage  Apr 24 2024, 07:54:58 AM

Just got an email from Ticketmaster that John Gallagher Jr is doing a concert in Brooklyn, so maybe that’s his announcement. Doesn’t seem like it’s Swept Away yet.
