Hilty & Simard to lead DEATH BECOMES HER in Chicago spring 2024  May 3 2024, 06:22:22 PM

Oh, yay, I love BalconyClub updates. I'll be following this closely. Hearing about all the little changes is fascinating to me.

Let’s call it what is was, a campy inoffensive musical that wasn’t particularly great to begin with. Lets not pretend is was anything more than that"

I think the way they tied Lempicka's arc to the broader fascist futurism movement was really compelling, and made

I’m not surprised, but I am sad that they weren’t able to pull together a more coherent show. There’s so much neat stuff in this, not to mention a pretty great score, and it’s all let down by an overworked hodgepodge book and haphazard staging. Maybe this’ll be one of those musicals that lives on as a tantalizing cast album.

Somewhat Baffling High Note Trends  May 1 2024, 01:39:49 PM

Honestly, I think it's as simple as the fact that vocal pyrotechnics are a cheap way to thrill the audience. Everyone gets excited when the lead unhinges her jaw and belts like a tornado siren, and then they go and tell their friends about it, or they post an audio clip on tiktok, which makes the rounds as free advertising. Mozart's (arguably) most famous aria is based entirely around exploiting his sister-in-law's absurd upper register and people still buy tickets for The Ma

All I want from this show is an ascot gavotte number for all the "dead" celebrities.

LEMPICKA Reviews  Apr 30 2024, 02:06:59 PM

This is one of those shows that's frustrating precisely because you can see the parts of it that are really great, and how they're muffled by the parts that aren't.

First off, I loved the score, even if the melody is often let down by pedestrian lyrics. These are just fun songs to listen to - Don't Bet Your Heart, Perfection, The Most Beautiful Bracelet, Pari Will Always Be Pari, Women, Stay, What She Sees, and Just This Way are all going to get heavy spotify rotati

HERE WE ARE heads to the recording studio  Apr 26 2024, 05:47:58 PM

The show's second half is definitely diminished by the lack of a score. I don't think it's technically unfinished, and the creators have a lot to celebrate, but it shifts from being one of the most thrilling musicals I've seen in years to being "just" a good stage adaptation of the movie. The way Sondheim was able to musically embody and expand on the picaresque surreality of Discreet Charm blew me away and the what-if element cast a long shadow.

John Napier's Brilliant Set Designs for the original SUNSET BOULEVARD  Apr 16 2024, 11:21:53 AM

Napier's designs were truly mind blowing. He fit a huge amount of scenery onto that stage! This video is from a preview performance in London. LuPone stars.

What the ****? Where did they store all of that?? The mansion I understand but there's so much of everything else, I never realized just how jam-packed this design was.

LEMPICKA Reviews  Apr 15 2024, 02:21:40 PM

Woah, I didn't expect the reviews for this show to be so negative, ouch. I hope this doesn't close before I get to see it.

Julie Benko as Fanny - Funny Girl  Apr 2 2024, 05:35:34 PM

Oh gosh, it's so lovely to be able to revisit this performance, she had such an earnest connection to the character. She does a great job of turning these songs into complete thoughts.

And I'm not someone that knows much about fine art, so I don't know how big Lempicka's name is for those that know more, but I suppose the main issue here is that a lot of people might not know who she is.

As someone who's only vaguely followed this show, I still don't know what the hook is, just that it comes across as being kind of academic and has a title with all the allure of sawdust.

THE SHINING opera will receive a cast recording  Mar 8 2024, 03:29:55 PM

I didn't find this to be a particularly great opera, but it's always nice to have new works properly recorded (still waiting on the two most recent Mazzoli pieces).

Wicked Movie Musical Teaser  Feb 12 2024, 09:06:23 PM

This whole thing just looks weird, but it's also a strained, over-edited teaser for what's probably going to be anywhere from three to five hours of movie (lol). I do agree that the vocal riff at the end sounds bizarre and a little bit bad, and also that it's disappointing how flat and desaturated the color grading is given the source material, but maybe it'll all come together in the end.

Also, all of my non-musical friends are calling Ariana's pink gown the &

I'm sorry that you don't know fat people who do things, but they do exist. Given the character, it's unlikely that they would be tasked with dancing, but fat people are perfectly capable of singing and acting, and are not at immediate constant risk

DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES - Opening Night Critics' Reviews  Jan 30 2024, 11:14:32 AM

The marketing is completely bizarre to me, it's like they're advertising it as a musical comedy to trick people into buying tickets.
