Profile: Why is Donna Murphy so good?

Specificity & Focus. She's amazing.

One day there will be a musical starring Audra McDonald and Donna Murphy, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and written and directed by Joss Whedon and the world will rejoice in harmony.

Hugh Jackman in The Music Man  Mar 14 2019, 08:15:00 PM

Love the Kate Baldwin idea. Also Audra as others have suggested was my first thought.

I do agree no matter who they pick they are better off going on the older side against Jackman. Someone who reads 30s at least. I mean yeah it's unlikely she;'d have a 10 year old brother but pretty much every Marian is past the odds of having a 10 year old brother.

I love Sutton Foster and while I'm sure she has the range for it I'm wondering if her voice type would fit Mar

Sister Act On Broadway!  Oct 17 2010, 04:43:29 AM
ChrissyDee I feel the EXACT same way as you on ALL of these points!

"I thought half of the show was amazing, and half a bore.

They need to cut the majority of the stuff for the men- no one cares!

They need to re-work the book- the three "supporting" nuns were so underwritten (which is confusing as they are so well written in the film!)

BUT I think it'll be nice on Broadway.

And its deffo not in Patinas contract-they are trying to woo a name apparently

Let's talk about SHELLY BORT  Aug 6 2010, 08:31:48 PM
While I doubt Shelly started her own "love" thread, who cares who really started it. She's a very talented composer whose music I've been enjoying for years (and I hope not to come across as a shill as I've also been on this forum for years although less frequently recently). Whoever posted just wanted to share Ms. Bort's music. What's so bad about that?
Overly 'self-aware' songs & characters  Mar 19 2010, 11:54:36 AM
Maybe I'm weird but when I'm pensive I often think in "one" should do this and in non-personal pronouns. I don't find it that weird at all.
re: Please hand Christiane Noll the Tony NOW! Bettyboy's Theatre Trip 4/4-4  Nov 9 2009, 02:15:40 PM
"I loved Ragtime but.....Noll really left me wanting more. I don't get the hype over her at all. She seemed like she was in a community theater show while everyone else was on Broadway. And I'm a big fan of hers."

INTERESTING. I felt kinda the opposite, like she made much more specific choices than many of her fellow actors and that she and "Mother's Younger Brother" were the standouts.

re: RAGTIME is a good, flawed show **Spoilers**  Nov 7 2009, 05:54:27 AM
"Because it heaps sentiment and emotional import upon these events, but the resonance never really comes because we're given no reason to really be invested or care other than we're being told to."

I saw it tonight for the first time after being a long time fan of the cast recording and I have to say that this pin points one of the major issues I had with it. I think if they cut some of the characters (Nesbitt, Houdini,) Some of the Songs (Gettin' Ready Rag, Crime of the Century, Atlant

re: High Schools and Sondheim Shows  Feb 1 2009, 10:21:08 PM
"My high school did PASSION last year as a one-act. It was the high school premiere of the show."

Wow. I would have loved to have seen video or pictures from that!

re: High Schools and Sondheim Shows  Feb 1 2009, 10:18:46 PM
I was in a decent middle/high school version of Sweeney back in the day. Though it is awkward having a chorus of "men" who's voices haven't change. We DID have an age-appropriate Toby though who was quite good:)

The first cd I ever purchased...the mo-town version of guys and dolls. I was 10. I didn't know any better.

I'd like to see her try Martha in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

I can HEAR her acting which is exciting. This makes me almost want to see Wicked.

The revolution of a certain race portrayed in musicals from the early days to modern times.
re: You Know It's Community Theatre When...  Jan 23 2009, 07:11:08 PM
"... the female love interest is overweight, and her being overweight has nothing to do with the plot."

If weight has nothing to do with the plot then what's the problem? Unless a character is supposed to be the epitamy of all conventional beauty (say a Helen of Troy) why can't the love interest me fat/plain/tall/short etc. That's one of the things I LIKE about some community theatres...not conventional casting. And as long as it's due to talent and not nepotism/bribery I'm all for it.

re: Elizabeth Ashley joins August: Osage County  Jan 16 2009, 02:34:00 PM
I saw August last night. And while Babara is one of the showier roles as written, Ms. Day was brilliant.
re: The Official 'Bad High School Productions on YouTube' Megathread  Jan 16 2009, 02:19:23 PM
She looks and sounds very nervous. I bet that was a big part of it.
re: Natalie Weiss  Jan 9 2009, 06:30:13 AM
It's way unfair to use American Idol to judge someone's talent. They've had finalists that frankly were unpleasant to listen to (which I doubt anyone would say of Ms. Weiss's voice at the very least) and have cut fabulous singers. It isn't about talent, it's about what "types" they want that particular year and if they can find people to fit them. It's carefully crafted, not a true talent competition.
Movie Musicals  Dec 24 2008, 01:00:21 PM
I can't think of a young Hollywood actress I'd like to see as Eliza. Maybe Amy Adams? OOo the thought of Amy Adams and Hugh Laurie makes me smile ear to ear.
Ramblings on Beauty in Theatre  Dec 16 2008, 06:37:39 PM
Because for some reason there is an association of "pretty" with "good", and fat in this day and age is considered "ugly". Even if your face is pretty, most people will say "you have such a pretty face" instead of saying you're so pretty. Like their face is the only beautiful part about them.

Go back to Dickens. For the most part the good people were beautiful, the bad people ugly. It's sad we haven't come that far since the 1800's. Why do leading ladies need to be thin in general? R
