Memphis the most underrated musical ever!  Jul 18 2023, 10:43:34 AM

MEMPHIS is the only musical I still want my money refunded for after all these years. Montego gave a nice performance, but that's reaching to try to give the show some kind of compliment. IMHO, it is the most overrated musical on this board.

Jinkx Monsoon to Play Mama in CHICAGO this January  Nov 24 2022, 12:14:51 PM

[SPOLIERS]

This sounds wonderful and Jinkx will give a great performance! I'm wondering though if this casting will clash with Mary Sunshine at all or if there may be some different interplay between those two characters as a result. Or, perhaps it won't be acknowledged and played as normal. I can't remember if Mama is in the final court scene at all, but there could be a HILARIOUS reaction upon Mary's reveal. Please let me know how it plays out if you're lucky enou

Triton Gallery  Sep 6 2022, 12:23:09 AM

I like to browse and used to drop a mint. Their hours aren’t very friendly anymore for weekend tourists. I even scheduled a trip so I could make a special stop there during posted hours. No one was there during the posted hours, nor was there a note or answering message that gave any indication that they would not be open that day. I know things happen, but they lost a regular fan and a devout shopper. I’ve also tried to arrange to drop by with a private appointment and have never

ALW releases new PHANTOM OF THE OPERA: GLOBAL EDITION compilation  Sep 3 2022, 12:38:11 PM

Big aficionado of foreign cast recordings and this is a dream! Would love to see this done with other shows. Les Miz has some beautiful recordings. I could also see more Webber ones - I’d kill for Sunset, Joseph, and Evita especially! I wonder how difficult this was to license- or maybe Webber kept a large stake in the recordings.

JOSEPH is coming to Toronto as a test run for a Broadway revival  Aug 25 2022, 08:52:05 PM

Just an honest question… has Joseph ever been successful on Bway? As I heard it, the only reason the 90s version was on the main stem was as a placeholder for Sunset since Webber wanted the Minskoff. I’ve never heard it discussed as successful in either the original or revival run.

What's The Next "Sound" for Broadway?  Aug 21 2022, 08:10:38 PM

Oh, forgot to point out… SIX has many EDM sounds, but that band is nailing that work. I imagine an EDM show would involve a bunch of DJs/engineers as the primary live talent. There is a recording of France Joli and I doing Heart of Stone that takes things in a further EDM direction, for some comparison.

What's The Next "Sound" for Broadway?  Aug 21 2022, 07:58:04 PM

There is still quite a resistance to EDM from the old Broadway guard. My dream is reorchestrating a classic and I have the credentials. Just waiting for the call. To paraphrase someone I was honored to remix as a Billboard dance/club chart topping EDM record, “Broadway, can you hear me?”

So many other great artists to also pull in. Would be great if the new Cats has a true ballroom steeped MD for sure!!!

I think part of the problem too is you need diversity in the so

Into The Woods casting updates  Jul 30 2022, 01:36:03 AM

Gosh I’d love to see Murphy without having to project through all that foam nonsense she had to keep adding through act one in the SITP production. So fascinating to have her play both sides of Rapunzel’s mother figure with previous work in Tangled. One day she needs to do a Mother Knows Best/Stay With Me medley!

I agree! However, I have seen multiple gay men's choirs perform this and I wish they wouldn't. It just does not work.

28 years ago today: ALW fired Faye Dunaway from LA's 'Sunset Boulevard' !  Jun 28 2022, 10:53:05 PM

I have heard it said that the Canadian album was recorded days after opening and Diahann was struggling. I also think the orchestra didn’t sound very full for the recording, almost tinny in some places. In live clips, Diahann appears to have much more excitement in her delivery and we know the orchestrations are solid, so I always guessed it was an off recording. Her finale is ferocious and that final look leaves me in shock. I believe she was offered the tour, but salary demands couldn

I listen to it frequently and it reminds me of how tremendous she would have been as Norma. I can hear it in that exact voice...

"You do know a Mr. Gillis? Well, exactly how much do you know about him? Do you know where he lives? Do you know what he lives on?"

At least I was able to catch her stellar work in Master Class!

While we’re on the subject, I have a little page dedicated to my Sunset collection. Check it out - missing somethings, but it has the Canadian posters. Always looking for more material to add, if you have scans or photos of things I’m missing, I’d love to see & share (with credit of course) and create a larger repository! https://www.joeldickinson.com/sunset

Thanks for sharing that Faye story. So sad, but it sounds like reviews may have been devastating.

As an avid fan of this show's art by Dewynters, I have followed its' history pretty closely. When the decision was made to record the American Premiere, a different design was needed to differentiate albums so the black and white was created. When the decision was made to make that the Broadway production, the art changed too. In Los Angeles, it was always the peach.

I also want to note that the Canadian company BRILLIANTLY resurrected the peach and combined it with a rich purp

Ummm… I’ve been looking for visual evidence of that Faye poster for two decades. Thanks for sharing that photo! If you ever need to clean it out of your collection, PM me. 😇

"With One Look" original lyrics from 1992 Sydmonton Festival  Jun 2 2022, 07:06:43 PM

Something happened when they moved away from Amy Powers with the lyrics for Sunset for sure, and I have a feeling that specific phrase you mention may have been hers or close enough to warrant legal credit more than the fine print she receives in the final version. I actually prefer it to the final version, but I'm not a fan of many of the tweaks made over the years that took away some bite.

I also think there was this constant shift throughout the entire development and run of the

THE GLASS MENAGERIE with Amy Adams in London  May 23 2022, 10:27:14 PM

I’m not a fan of her stage work, but this will never be the worst Menagerie even if Adams leaves much to be desired. That honor is still held by the Leveaux/Lange/Paulson disaster, or as I call it, the original American Horror Story.

Fight Club musical- still ongoing?  May 23 2022, 10:18:27 PM

Omg. I’d have loved to have seen Christian Borle & Patrick Wilson in this. And Julie Taymor & Reznor? Count me in for Jack’s Big Homophombic/Homoerotic American Musical! Get Sutton Foster in as Marla, book Korins & the Beetlejuice design team. And please, let’s get Brad Garrett for Bob. Done.

Beanie Feldstein in FUNNY GIRL on Broadway - News & Discussion Thread  Mar 12 2022, 02:58:35 PM

This is the only show I will have seen that I have no interest in even getting a window card, and I’m a collector. Unless that logo gets revised it’s ugly and I want no part. To be honest, the more I learn and see about this show, the less I feel it was worth it to go invest in premium seats.

Forgotten Musicals  Mar 13 2022, 04:20:40 PM

Someone mentioned Joseph. That has been revived and on tour non-stop for years in the UK and it is a community (and church) theatre staple performed so often that it’s not unusual to see on season schedules many years in a row. Unless Daniel Fish takes the helm, I just don’t see what another big revival would even offer. Although it’s nice to have kid-friendly fare, Disney has done it bigger and better. Now, the long-rumored cartoon might bring some new life.

costume/scenery reveals  Feb 19 2022, 11:05:25 AM

The reveal of Norma’s mansion in the original Sunset Blvd. is still one of the few times I remember an audience giving scenery a star entrance with applause.
