Laura Benanti to replace Lauren Ambrose in MY FAIR LADY  Oct 26 2018, 12:27:44 PM
If you think one interpretation of a role as rich and complex as Eliza can be the only and final interpretation then you really aren't a fan of My Fair Lady.

I have no need to see this show again. I saw - and felt - perfection with the original cast. That said, I wish Laura the best. She has big shoes to fill."

Excuse me? The original cast? The original cast was Julie Andrews, Rex Harrison and Stanley Holloway with Moss Hart directing.

Dancingthrulife2 said: "Judging from the audio recording "out there," I am not really impressed with many of her choices, which I find jarring and lacking Ambrose's porous humanity that makes this production so special to me personally."

"Porous humanity"? How can you judge a perfromance on an audio bootleg? And for the record I was at an early preview of Ambrose where she went up in lines during the entire Ascot scene. i was discerning enough

Chorus Line @ NY City Center  Oct 24 2018, 05:34:19 PM

I've always thought ACL could work if they kept the songs and musical numbers but had a different group of actors tell their own Broadway gypsy stories. Because let's face it, they all have had those stories and the songs I think could be adapted to fit more than one life story. I think what worked so well for the original production was that Michael Bennett based the script so closely on actual struggling Broadway actors. It had the feel of authenticity. I think without that authenti

My Fair Lady Ending  Oct 22 2018, 08:04:23 PM

Yeah Shaw's written ending is very cynical. Eliza settles into a not-very-romantic marriage with Freddie and the two of them can't make ends meet or manage that flower shop. She's sort of become like her father -- constrained by "middle class morality" but there's no sense she's happy or anything. Shaw's PLAY however is ambiguous, and I think his first instinct was right. Leave it up in the air. Life isn't always tied up in neat little bows.

Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 10/21/18  Oct 22 2018, 07:23:00 PM

I saw Torch Song off broadway and really enjoyed it. I want it to have a strong run. I don't get why BiTB regularly sold out while Torch Song is struggling so much.

My Fair Lady Ending  Oct 22 2018, 06:52:01 PM

I kind of view the ending as a reset of the Eliza/Higgins relationship. Eliza is starting over in life. She's learned "how to be a lady" and much more, and Higgins has also learned from Eliza. What will happen between them is totally up in the air.

Laura Benanti to replace Lauren Ambrose in MY FAIR LADY  Oct 22 2018, 04:48:27 PM

laurensambrose said: "I actually think Rigg was gone when Lauren’s father would have passed away, because I remember there was about five days last month when Kerstin Anderson and Heather Botts both played Eliza, and by that time Rosemary Harris had stepped in. However, if Lauren was having health issues and Rigg still felt the need to make those comments it still doesn’t look good on her, IMO."

Well it sounds as if Lauren's father had been gravely il

Laura Benanti to replace Lauren Ambrose in MY FAIR LADY  Oct 22 2018, 04:26:28 PM

What was the hardest part of the show?

I dropped out of a few performances when my dad passed away about a month ago. The show was something that my dad was so very proud of. He was at opening night, even though he was very ill. To get to come back to the show and be surrounded by this amazing group of be

At this rate Torch Song might not even make it to opening night.

Hi I want to see this but am looking at Telecharge. Is rear mezzanine okay for this play? Or is it better to be closer?

A Star Is Born review. WOW!  Oct 20 2018, 12:15:39 AM

Saw this tonight, was absolutely blown away. Lady Gaga is absolutely incredible as Ally. She's so warm and earthy and funny. Bradley Cooper absolutely broke my heart. The chemistry between the two was amazing, and the first time they sing "Shallow" together was electrifying. I cried all my makeup off. It's a worthy successor to the Judy Garland film.

Patti's At It Again!  Oct 12 2018, 12:53:26 PM

givesmevoice said: "I don't even know if it's just that Bernadette is a private person, because for as open and honest as she is about her professional life, Patti talks relatively little about her personal life.

And to poisonivy'squestion about whether Lin-Manuel Miranda, Kelli O'Hara or Donna Murphy are authentic and honest even if they don't share their negative opinions, I do think some of them are. I think that Donna Murphy seems like a down-to-ear

Musicals without Romance  Oct 11 2018, 10:15:37 PM

I feel like Hamilton is a musical without a romance because while Eliza and Angelica are important parts of Hamilton's life the musical focuses on Hamilton's political relationships. His rivalries with Burr and Jefferson are to me the heart of the story.

Patti's At It Again!  Oct 11 2018, 10:12:50 PM

Although Midler being "temperamental" in Hello Dolly! is news to me. I know she was compensated handsomely for her involvement but I never heard of any tensions in the Hello Dolly! crew. If anything seems like that was one of the tighter Broadway casts of recent years.

ETA: I don't see why Bernadette Peters is inauthentic. Maybe she genuinely appreciates the people she works with. Some people are like that. For instance is Lin Manuel Miranda "inauthentic"

Patti's At It Again!  Oct 11 2018, 08:38:52 PM

I feel like I know the content of a Patti interview before I even read it. I think that's what bothers me about her -- she's so damned repetitive. Come up with new stuff. A comedian can't tell the same jokes for 25 years without the joke becoming stale.

Laura Benanti to replace Lauren Ambrose in MY FAIR LADY  Oct 11 2018, 08:37:02 PM

Well, I have tickets to see Benanti. I'm sure I'll enjoy her. She'll be very different from Ambrose but I'm curious to see what she does with what she admits is her dream role. I guess things have a way of working themselves out don;t they?

Musicals without Romance  Oct 11 2018, 07:20:06 PM

Uh, Hamilton?

Book of Mormon cast as of late?  Oct 10 2018, 10:11:25 PM

I saw this show in September with the new Price and Cunningham (I saw it one year earlier with Nic Rouleau) and it was like night and day. Dave Thomas Brown and Cody Jamison Strand are super-funny as Price and Cunningham. For anyone wanting to make a return trip I highly recommend this Price/Cunningham combo.

Should there be a SHOW BOAT revival anytime soon?  Oct 9 2018, 11:43:59 PM

I can't believe that with all the talk about how "problematic" the book is there isn;t talk that Show Boat is one of the first pieces of theater to acknowledge the symbiosis between musical traditions that has always brought different races together. Julie teaching Magnolia to sing and Magnolia singing Julie's songs and then later passing her knowledge to Kim is as compelling as the way Elvis Presley combined Southern gospel music with country to create his own sound, or Amy
