I agree with you that the New York standards are higher and the talent pool is larger but besides Jessie would you actually want to see any of those actors play the part? I’d like Laura Benanti, Patina Miller, Carmen Cusack, Renee Goldsberry..shoot me but if they want a hit Idina Menzel.

I’m confused. At Sunday In the Park audiences are much more likely to be sleeping than grabbing attention (and I LOVE the show - everyone knows Sondheim is my fav - but it has a very niche audience).

And as discussed in that other thread - the criticism of Be More Chill’s sales this week were not at all grounded in reality.
Always has been 1/2 of my dreamcast (with Bernadette being the other). Unfortunately, if it wasn't obvious from my posts I have moved countries so I won't even get to see it!
I caught this show recently off-west in London and although I think it's deeply flawed (it starts off far too slow and is even a little, boring, at times) - that last 35 minutes or so from the moment Violet arrives to North Carolina to the curtain call is AMAZING....especially that Rose's Turn/Lot's Wife-type moment where in desperation Violet starts trying to call on god to heal herself, and then "Look At Me", which is so devastating. The role seemed PERFECT for Sutton
Patti gets her little moments throughout the show to steal the limelight (e.g., from the very beginning "This is a dirty phone call", who wants to celebrate being that old, I have so many candles I could make a wax museum or whatever the line is), The Little Things You Do Together, Have I Got a Guy For You etc. plus that amazing night club scene. Yes it's a 'featured' role but adds so much........I suspect a lot of the energy would be sucked out of the show with her.&nbs
Patti is out of the show tonight! Devastating for audiences. I honestly believe she is the most important actor in this show.

Maybe you ‘had to be there’ but I’m confused how the workshop staging could be better? The national theatre production for 2019 standards was pretty elaborate and detailed. There was a lot of different things going on there......elevators. Moving set pieces. Complexity. What happened in the workshop?
I mean, we'll find out in a couple of days, but I suspect that your predictions are wrong. Be More Chill is not going to immediately stagger like any of the truly devastating flops that might have been better off closing in previews (e.g., The Visit, The Scottsboro Boys, Bridges of Madison County etc.). It may not be a hit, but the way you are describing this show makes it sound like it is about to be a complete fiasco financially.
Be More Chill may very well flop once the audience drys up in a few months, but just because there is a hand-full of seats left each night does not mean this is a massive disaster the same way we see with other shows time and time again. Proof will be in the grosses, but I suspect there will be a decent start for this song.

After Eight, out of curiosity have you listened to the cast recording? I suspect that you have. Which I find so bizarre because you didn’t like the show. Why do you keep exposing yourself to material you don’t like?

I know it may technically be true but Spider Woman is not what I think of when I hear West End musical. Famed Broadway director, writers, star. Spider Woman was a Broadway Musial paying rent in and presented to west end audiences, that’s all.

The show was cancelled during the first act tonight apparently. Craig is still sick and the understudy couldn’t continue, also sick. Very unusual for shows to be in this predicament!
Based on now at least three recent examples: Fun Home, Gentlemen's Guide and The Band's Visit we can see that the "Best Musical" Tony definitely has a noticeable and lasting impact on ticket sales. In theory I would have thought the acting Tonys should help box office, but to be honest there appears to be countless examples where the impact seems rather unnoticed or slim. There is only one Tony Award I'd bank on as a Producer, and that's the Best Musical award.
I agree she is replaceable but I honestly believe it's more the fault of the writing and character than her as an actress. I don't know if anyone in that role could have saved the show.
