HADESTOWN to open in March at the Walter Kerr  Mar 15 2019, 07:11:53 AM

theaterlyfe19 said: "If I wasn't a huge fan of Great Comet (liked some songs, just couldn't get into the story) should I skip this? I'm intrigued by the preview clip thing Jordan Roth posted, but at the same time I'm not sure. Thoughts?"

The Great Comet and Hadestown share only one thing in common: their director. That’s it. Wildly different shows and scores and vibes. If you’re intrigued and can afford the ticket, go see it.

WOW, this is a mess  Mar 15 2019, 07:04:58 AM
Hm... this is one production that I don’t think I’ll ever decide if I liked or not. I lean more towards like because I really loved the performances (mostly) but this play is - in every sense - a mess.

It’s a political comedy tragedy farce gender battle spectacle morality play clown show and if it hurts your eyes reading that, it won’t make you feel much better having it all shoved down your throat at once by Taylor Mac’s script. It’s one of those situations where there’s SO much flying

Hugh Jackman in The Music Man  Mar 13 2019, 07:49:33 PM
She probably wouldn’t do it, but can you imagine the meal Kristine Nielsen would make out of all the Baaaaaalzac’s?

THE HUMANS Film starring Richard Jenkins, Jayne Houdyshell, Amy Schumer, Beanie Feldstein  Mar 13 2019, 06:54:28 PM

I have nothing but faith in the producing minds who run A24. This sounds like a great cast. The casting of Beanie Feldstein is especially inspired. I loved the original production and hope everything that made the text exciting onstage translates to the screen.

Hugh Jackman in The Music Man  Mar 13 2019, 02:55:45 PM

I think the general want is better original work and better revivals. Not all original work, all the time. A revival as good as, say, “Hello, Dolly!” is worth a theater being dark to a potential incoming new work. It puts great talent to work and fills the pockets of producers (granted, not *every* producer) who can then take risks on producing other, less obviously marketable properties.

KISS ME, KATE (2019 Roundabout Revival) - Previews  Mar 7 2019, 03:01:00 PM
I got a rush ticket to the matinee yesterday and left at intermission. Frankly, after the misguided crapfest that was Carousel, I’ve had it with revivals of classic musicals that rest on our love of them to coast by.

The good: Kelli sounds divine, the dancing is exciting, and score is sung well.

The bad: well... everything else. Standard sets you’d see in any regional theater, non-committal direction, actors sleepwalking through their parts, wildly miscast leads, punchlines lan

The frose is delicious. My husband and I bought one every act both nights cheeky.

Gary: A Sequel To Titus Andronicus Previews  Mar 5 2019, 05:35:13 PM

mcsquared said: "Hmmm.. I just did read the Wikipedia entry and it said it was the bloodiest and most violent of Shakespeare’s plays. Gary itself is a comedy though right? "

Gary would appear to be a comedy, based on the tagline, the cast, and the writing/general sensibilities of Taylor Mac. I imagine it will be a very dark comedy with very serious things on its mind, but it will also almost definitely be riotously funny. Along the lines of “A Little Prie

Michael Jackson musical...new documentary  Mar 5 2019, 05:31:30 PM
I have no reason not to believe Wade Robson and James Safechuck. Michael Jackson’s personal life always gave me the creeps, even as a child growing up. A grown man having private sleepovers with children he deems “friends” is disturbing on so many levels by itself, and those are situations he freely admitted to engaging in. Then, you add in the factor of psychological and sexual abuse and it goes to a whole other level. It is, sadly, not altogether shocking to hear that all the things you could

Gary: A Sequel To Titus Andronicus Previews  Mar 4 2019, 12:52:16 PM
So sad for Andrea Martin, who I was probably most looking forward to seeing in this. But oh boy, if you have to find a last minute replacement for a trio of comic actors of this caliber, you f***ing get Julie White. Brilliant casting.

BE MORE CHILL (Broadway) Previews  Feb 28 2019, 03:21:39 PM
But Kad, those facts don’t support their reality. Surely there must be an alternate group of findings that do support the totally false claim that audiences are young and diverse across the board? No? Facts are facts, you say? Alrighty then.

The Jungle - St. Ann's Warehouse  Feb 27 2019, 03:56:55 PM
Depending on how this does in SF, there is 100% a commercial run happening in NYC immediately after. It’s all but built into everyone’s contracts.

Reviews vs. going into a show blind  Feb 27 2019, 10:40:09 AM
I don’t tend to read reviews before unless it’s a show I’m not sure if I want to see or not. If it’s a show I’m really interested in but either can’t afford tickets to yet or don’t have tickets to for a while, I’ll scan the previews thread here if there is one.

For me, the real joy of a good critique is reading it after seeing the performance and exploring other viewpoints and catching things you may have missed. Sara Holdren has particularly been a wonderful read lately, whether it’s f

HADESTOWN complete score  Feb 24 2019, 01:45:28 PM
Yeah, but they also had Josh Groban. I think the likelikehood is that we’ll get a recording of the Broadway cast, but I think if not, the reasoning will be that the live recording is solid. Which it is. But I’d like an official studio recording, personally, as well.

HADESTOWN complete score  Feb 24 2019, 01:04:00 PM
I hope so. There’s a new cast, new song tweaks, and new orchestrations. I’d imagine they’d want to preserve the finished product of something that’s been in development for over a decade. That said, they have been pushing the live recording on nearly every Broadway as I’ve seen. That could be a marketing ploy to generate buzz, but it could also mean they’re content with the recording that exists already.

Oklahoma transferring to Circle in the Square...  Feb 21 2019, 07:45:32 AM

So...is Harry Potter better in part 2?  Feb 21 2019, 01:23:51 AM
Dramamama, you’re not alone. My husband and I went last year for my birthday and, besides the magic, it felt like a huge waste of our time. And we did it over the course of two nights. Thankfully, we scored the $20 tickets, so it wasn’t made worse by the ticket price. But still.

The Culture Shed  Feb 20 2019, 12:24:54 PM
John Tiffany backed out due to scheduling conflicts. Not surprising, considering how in-demand he is at the moment.

I don’t believe there’s any new music Sia is contributing since the website just says “featuring remixed versions.”

Oklahoma transferring to Circle in the Square...  Feb 19 2019, 12:34:00 PM
Great news! One of the most solid ensembles I’ve ever seen.

The Culture Shed  Feb 18 2019, 08:52:25 AM
Bringing this one back because I became a subscriber about a month ago and am really looking forward to what looks - on paper - like an exciting and diverse inaugural season for this new space.

I already got my tickets to Björk’s Cornucopia, Norma Jean Baker of Troy, and Dragon Spring Phoenix Rise and plan to see more, but curious if there’s any buzz around these parts for any of it? I assume a large portion of you got the mailer for the season a couple months back.
