BE MORE CHILL (Broadway) Reviews  Mar 12 2019, 01:21:50 PM
With many plays eligible for Best Score, we’re going to get five nominees in the category. I think Hadestown, Tootsie, and The Prom are locks for nominations. Two more slots are open. Be More Chill definitely has a shot for a nomination in this category, despite the not so great reviews. I do, however, wonder who will get in among play composers: Adam Guettel, Danny Elfman, Philip Glass, Gabriel Kahane? I think if voters don’t respond to Be More Chill (and most are not in the target demographic,

Brantley actually gives a nice shoutout to The Prom, calling it “big-hearted.” He would have have probably given it a nice review.

Way Too Early 2019 Tony Predictions thread  Mar 8 2019, 09:36:26 AM
They could honestly double the amount of play category nominees and just announce winners without nominations for the musicals this year. Plays are so stacked this year!

I wonder how the music in plays this season will affect nominations. There are not a lot of (good) original musical scores to choose from and we have pretty big-name people who composed music for plays this year: Philip Glass, Danny Elfman, Adam Guettel, Gabriel Kahane.

Has a show ever gotten to EGOT status?  Feb 13 2019, 07:20:01 PM

If we’re talking wins in any category at the respective awards and considering source material, Disney has several shows that are an Emmy away: Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Aladdin, and Mary Poppins.

Les Misérables, Chicago, Evita, Dreamgirls, West Side Story, A Little Night Music, Cabaret, The Music Man, and (if considering source material) Once, The Producers, and Promises, Promises are an Emmy away.

Dear Evan Hansen, The Color Purple, Gypsy, The W

Cast Albums Grammy 2019?  Feb 10 2019, 04:02:48 PM
Congrats to The Band’s Visit! And now Katrina Lenk, Ari’el Stachel, and David Yazbek are halfway to EGOT.

It’s a fantastic album. I think the Grammys nailed this category this year. One of the best groups of albums in a long time.

THE BAND'S VISIT sets closing  Feb 4 2019, 09:01:19 AM
This makes me sad, but who can argue its success? Ten Tony Awards and recoupment for a show no one thought would fare well on Broadway. Congrats to all for such a successful run from a little show that could.

RENT Live on Fox  Feb 3 2019, 08:35:22 PM
Daphne Rubin-Vega is one of the most underrated performers in my opinion. I think it’s sad that people don’t understand her. She’s such a great actor and performer. And I love the gruffness of her voice. While others may have more pleasant singing voices, she’s always felt like the real Mimi to me. Her passion in the role is remarkable and untouched.

Cast Albums Grammy 2019?  Feb 2 2019, 01:42:32 AM
I still think it’s between The Band’s Visit (the Tony winner) and Jesus Christ Superstar (the Emmy winner).

RENT Live on Fox  Feb 1 2019, 01:02:22 AM

Actually, these sound like different takes from the aired performance. I wonder if they recorded an entire vocal performance of the show (with an audience present). "Today 4 U" is obviously not what we heard when we watched. So far, I think this is a welcome addition to the recordings we have of Rent. There aren't many full recordings of the show, and this comes close, even with the edits.

I believe the studio recordings they released are incorporated, not replac

What realistic Tony nominations do you think BE MORE CHILL will receive?  Jan 30 2019, 12:50:17 PM
I’d be very surprised if Hadestown is deemed ineligible. This is not the first time a stage musical came out of a concept album, and as others have said, it’s been changing and developing since the album came out. I think it would be unfair to say that it’s not an original score since it was written as a folk opera and this will be the final, fully developed version of the score.

If Newsies and Aladdin were somehow 51% original, I’d imagine Hadestown would be eligible.

What realistic Tony nominations do you think BE MORE CHILL will receive?  Jan 29 2019, 11:32:39 PM
Score is probable but not guaranteed, especially with memorable music in plays by Gabriel Kahane (The Waverly Gallery) and Adam Guettel (To Kill a Mockingbird). Tootsie, Hadestown, and The Prom are the only locks in both Musical and Score.

Black Glinda  Jan 13 2019, 10:31:58 AM
There are still many things women and POC havent been able to do, and at the very least dont get the same amounts of opportunities to do them as white men, so I will continue to celebrate and spread joy when something like this happens. If that makes me a horrible person, so be it.

Black Glinda  Jan 13 2019, 01:32:12 AM
I dont know, I still like to celebrate when women are successful in jobs that arent gender specific because they get fewer opportunities even though theres no shortage of talented women. Even if we run out of firsts, its still cool to celebrate their accomplishments.

Weve had women win Tony Awards for Best Play, Best Score, Best Direction of a Play and Musical... but how often do we actually see women being featured in these capacities on Broadway? We should absolutely be allowed to cel

South Pacific, hands down. Its the best written show of the three.

Roman Banks to become first person of color to play Evan Hansen today!  Dec 13 2018, 06:43:38 AM
It’s not conscious (or maybe it is), but it’s been sort of default to cast principals with white actors while people of color maybe get a token slot in an ensemble. Obviously, people have been more and more aware of this and that’s why you see some shows try to break the mold. I bet not many actors of color even thought they could audition for a show like Dear Evan Hansen (and particularly for the title character) until casting brought them in. It’s not very common for an actor of color to step

Roman Banks to become first person of color to play Evan Hansen today!  Dec 12 2018, 01:46:52 PM
It’s rare that a person of color gets the opportunity to play a character that doesn’t have race as part of their story arc, especially the title character in one of the biggest hits in recent years, so this is absolutely something to celebrate.

Michelle Williams on OOTI Cast Page  Dec 12 2018, 12:40:15 PM
I’m thrilled to hear Lea is returning, but I hope Michelle is doing all right.

Oklahoma transferring to Circle in the Square...  Dec 12 2018, 08:14:29 AM
I mean to say that the orchestrations in this production made me never want to hear the show done another way, including the lush originals. It’s the most fresh re-orchestration of a traditional musical I’ve ever heard. And it was no easy task to do.

Oklahoma transferring to Circle in the Square...  Dec 11 2018, 11:35:01 PM
Honestly, this has got to win the Tony for Best Orchestrations. Hands down.
