KING KONG - BORING & Unnecessary Show!  Oct 18 2018, 05:01:18 PM

Jordan Catalano said: "Besides the puppet, everything else is just so boring. It’s not a sh*tshow like BKLYN or SPIDER-MAN. It’s worse than that because it’s all just so unnecessary. "

It got to the point last night where a secondary character stood up to Carl Denham near the end of the show with a very sassy line and most of the audience (at least the mezzanine where I was sitting) all went ooooOOOOOOOOOoooo as if it were a canned studio audience r

Mister Matt said: "All these bizarre reviews make me really want to see this.

Good lord, what an epic dumpster fire of a musical.

That comment immediately makes me think of Hot Feet. It can't be worse than Hot Feet. Or Brooklyn! Certainly, it's not worse than Brooklyn, is it?
"

Those productions at least followed a somewhat traditional musical construction with actual songs.   King Kong has maybe 3 or 4 songs at most

KING KONG - Great Show!  Oct 17 2018, 11:30:15 PM
Good lord, what an epic dumpster fire of a musical. I really can’t even say much else. This maybe belongs as a 30 minute theme park show with just the King King puppet doing some cool things, because holy wow is the rest of the show just utterly inept. Thank god for that puppet !

Oh yea, and that ending is so...awkward. The audience kinda barely clapped and then OH WAIT the ensemble is about to take their bow.

THE FERRYMAN Previews  Oct 11 2018, 11:47:03 AM
I think I’m also in the “on the fence” camp. The acting is mostly superb (one or two hammy performances), and the atmosphere they build is quite intriguing, but it feels like a whole lot of nothing until BAM, and then it’s over just like that.

I think this one definitely suffers from a bit too much exposition and could easily be cut down by 30 minutes, or make it a two part play and really delve into the whole Seamus Carney story.

Also, the Muldoon character was almost cart

Marin Mazzie Has Passed Away  Sep 14 2018, 11:55:19 AM
This is so incredibly devastating. Such stage presence, warmth, gravitas, and a voice for the ages. Most of my broadway memories of her ironically came 20 years ago with ragtime and kiss me kate when I was barely in middle school, but made such a huge impression on me. I practically grew up with the Ragtime cast recording. I only saw her in concerts after that.

This song probably has a new meaning today. Hard to listen to it.

Whatever happened to Jonathan Dokuchitz...  Aug 27 2018, 11:05:27 PM
I was working on a big reunion concert he was in about 3 years ago. Perfectly pleasant but didn’t really stick around much, even during the performance itself. He was in very good voice, but I think indeed he has retired

Springsteen only did 4 performances instead of 5.

So the last few weeks The Band’s Visit has been slowly declining their gross potential and I’ve been wondering why. This week they are at 91% and I’m just interested how they decline over 10% in the last month? Is it because we are past the initial block of tickets? I’m not saying 91% is bad by any means compared to others but does anyone have some insight on this decline?"

But clearly Davenport's rock-bottom discounts are getting people in the seats. 94% capacity is not low, even for a heavily comped show. And by all accounts, audiences outside of this message board seem to be loving it. So if his 94% capacitycan lead to positive word of mouth, we may very well see an uptake in sales in the coming months.

That is,

Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 8/5/18  Aug 6 2018, 04:12:12 PM

"What accounts for the fact that grosses fluctuate for shows that are consistently sold out without discounts? I understand that there is often a discrepancy between the gross and the attendance due to the fact that many shows have steep discounts and/or comps. But what about shows like Harry Potter? It's never on TDF or TKTS, and as far as I know, they don't have any promo codes, and they haven't been changing their ticket prices. So why would their grosses (and fo

Why did Tuck Everlasting bomb so bad?  Jun 24 2018, 10:54:07 PM
The show was maybe passable for a community theatre, but for broadway it was just really lame, misguided, and blander than white bread. It had maybe one decent song, but everything else just felt so amateurish. Terrific cast, though.

The ballet was nice, but it was like watching a heavy metal band dropped into a Mozart opera. Completely out of place.

I think the typical sound and playing that some "purists" want would have been a

Tony Awards: Predicting the Winners Using Math  Jun 9 2018, 08:48:16 PM
The movie won awards because it was good. The musical will not win awards because it’s simply not good. I know you’re a huge fan of it, but even if it weren’t Disney, in no universe are the new songs composed for Frozen better than the score for Band’s Visit or even Spongebob for that matter.

Anyways, this system he’s using is probably slightly flawed this year Since the band’s visit wasn’t Eligible for most of the awards this year. That being said, it looks like most of his predict

Shoutout To Kelli O'Hara-Classic Roles!  Jun 9 2018, 08:43:12 PM
There’s two things I’m waiting (im)patiently for her to do:

- Margaret Johnson in a Light in the Piazza revival, especially after hearing her sing Fable last year.
- I was hoping after the huge success of Brigadoon last year that City Center would do Camelot for their gala so she could be Guenevere before it’s too late.

Beyond that, I’d listen to her sing the manual instructions to my iPhone.
