Riedel on the growing hype for Moulin Rouge!  Aug 3 2018, 12:16:09 PM

I hope they replace Olivo. I thought she retired anyway. Guess that was a publicity stunt. I tried to see her 4x in West Side Story, 3x in In The Heights and 2x in Murder Ballad-all unsuccessful. She has issues with long runs.

Riedel on Head Over Heels being on thin ice  Jul 29 2018, 04:13:18 PM

Bringing in a stunt cast will increase costs and defeat the very purpose. Bringing Belinda (she's the only viable one) or Ms. GOOP onboard would inflate the budget. Gwyneth sells beauty and lifestyle-to promote the show would sully her branding and prostitute her empire. Not gonna happen. I think shes on to the next thing already, honestly. This show sounds DOA.

What is the greatest 'Jerry Mitchell' Musical  Jul 22 2018, 09:19:35 PM
I’d say Legally Blonde. I find it athletic and thrilling. I agree that the show didn’t get its due. He did great work on that show. Elle is a hard role to pull off.

I found Hairspray pretty full and typical.

That is the legendary Bob Mackie. Please don’t reduce him to just “the costumer.”

His association with this show legitimized the production to many. It did to me and to others who first dismissed THE CHER SHOW when it was first announced.
"

Oh my God. I’m fully aware the costume DESIGNER is Mackie. By addressing the costumer I mean who ever is sewing and fitting the

The Cher Show  Jun 28 2018, 03:58:13 PM
I went to both Wednesday shows yesterday and they were identical. Theatre was packed for both with responsive crowds. Audience was into it. Heard lots of positive comments after. Spoke with Michael Barresse at stage door and he said those shows felt great. He said it felt like things were coming together and landing with the audiences. He said they were the best audiences so far.

My thoughts. I like the three Chers. It’s very meta and I think it works. Babe and Star Cher are the stando

Betty Buckley @ Joe's Pub  Jun 15 2018, 01:32:25 PM

Buckley is certainly unique and the voice is changing with age, for sure. However, I think she can handle Dolly. Betty is, at heart, a charming cowgirl. She has a warm smile and pluck. She tends towards darker material, but she can do broad comedy. Also, Dolly isn't necessarily a "happy" role. Bernadette has said in interviews that Dolly is at an impasse in her life and the show is about rebirth. Betty is a master storyteller in song. It's what she does. I believe her "

The Cher Show  May 24 2018, 03:10:55 PM

I have tickets for the matinee and evening show prior to opening night. Can't wait.

Anyone know the REAL reason Hello Dolly refused to perform at the TONYS?  May 24 2018, 02:30:20 PM

Because Bette didn't want to be immortalized on youtube croaking the title number. Her voice is serviceable, but fairly shot compared to her glory days. She has too much vanity to allow that. Rudin took the bullet as producer. Also, as others have said, on the whole she delivers a marvelous, iconic performance. That being said she didn't want America hearing her without context thinking how dreadful she was.

Lea Salonga will play final performance in ONCE ON THIS ISLAND on June 24!  May 9 2018, 04:33:48 PM

Having seen both, I preferred Darlesia. Darlesia's voice has an earthiness and a sensuality that Lea's does not. No disrespect to Lea, I love her. Just think in the conceptualization of the show, Darlesia is a better fit.

Reflecting on Alex Newell not getting the Tony nom  May 8 2018, 04:00:34 PM

Now Kenita, that I am shocked about. She was heartbreaking, primal and fully committed. A master class. Alex's first Broadway show. Clearly didn't have the stamina. Seemed exhausted, making drag queen faces while singing and fussing with his clothes and acting disinterested when not the focus. Not impressed.

Way too early 2018 Tony Predictions Thread  Apr 26 2018, 10:55:11 PM

And maybe he was sick, who knows, but when you’re on Broadway it doesn’t matter. (Canyou imagine an Elphaba half-assing the end of Defying Gravity?? People would revolt.) And it sticks out like a sore thumb because the entire rest of the cast is LIVING on that stage. Anyway, I guess it just

Just hand the Tony to Katrina Lenk. She's magnificent and no one can touch that performance.

Songs about leaving a man  Mar 8 2018, 01:27:02 PM

Chris Evans and Michael Cera Stage Door  Mar 8 2018, 01:25:10 PM

Evans can't come out because he will be plagued by the ebayers. If an actor has an affiliation with a franchise its brutal with the collectors and ebayers. Its one thing to sign for theatre fans but the advent of camera phones and secondary markets has created a bloodlust by people trying to make a buck. I gather he'll never come out and the other actors will want to avoid the melee created by his absence.

The Cher Show  Mar 6 2018, 10:53:07 PM
Well I bought tickets for 2 shows during previews, the evening and matinee before opening night. Ticket prices change throughout the run and definitely go up after opening.

No mention of casting yet, but SJB is definitely singing “If I Could Turn Back Time” in the teaser trailer.

Did  Mar 5 2018, 12:53:24 PM

The more I listen to "This Is Me" the less I am in impressed. Bombastic and bland is definitely a good description. Actually most of the songs in the Greatest Showman are vague enough to fit anywhere in any film. "This Is Me" will always have legs because it will touch the hearts of disenfranchised theatre nerds around the world. Keala oversang it last night and tried to replicates the passion of the workshop video. It didn't work for me. By the end I had a migraine.&n

Oriental Theatre-Chicago Seating Question  Mar 5 2018, 12:06:02 PM

Tickets for the Cher show go on presale for AMEX card holders. That place looks huge. The seating map does not show where the dress circle and loge overhang. Also, photos from the dress circle look like the top of the stage is cut off? Any advice. Also, how are the side box views in the dress circle and loge? Thanks for any insight.

Renee Taylor takes the Cort?  Mar 4 2018, 05:51:23 PM

This played a short run in Buffalo and they couldn't give away tickets in a 400 seat house. I love Renee, but putting this on Broadway is reaching. It's better suited for Theatre Row or New World for a limited run. I wish her all the best with it.

Taylor Trensch as Evan Tonight?!  Mar 2 2018, 12:52:40 PM
I agree with the reviewer who says he looks too old. I saw the promo shots and he looks about 35 next to Zoe. Also the awful wig they’ve given him does him no favors. It ages him greatly.
