Wouldn’t that be just after this seasons Tony eligibility period? Are they hoping to have enough buzz to last a year without any awards boost?
HAIRSPRAY opened in late August 2002, over 2 months after the Tony Awards and swept the 2003 Tony Awards so that has no relevancy whatsoever. HAIRSPRAY already had planned that August opening day even before their out-of-town Seattle tryout so they had no idea how the musical would be received or what buzz would exist.
Tentatively scheduled to land at 4pm during the peak of afternoon traffic? If you’re arriving into JFK, expect almost 2 hours in traffic. LGA could be about 90 minutes plus. Times Square is in the middle of Manhattan and one-way street congestion is heavy until about 11pm-midnight. Arriving at 4pm, taxing to the gate and collecting baggage can be a 45 minute process with no delays. Expect to be in an Uber or cab around 5pm. Now do the math.
Thrilled to read that Kushner is using the original 1957 Broadway production's book and adding realism to it thus keeping the late 50s idiom and life in NYC during that period to the screenplay. The 1961 multi-Oscar winning film was itself an adaptation of the original 1957 Broadway production. This one will be its own adaptation of the original 1957 Broadway production. They're not remaking/adapting the 1961 film so enough with this comparison talk.
This is definitely happening. Lady Gaga wants to cover all platforms of the entertainment world and her Broadway debut in something at this level will make this FUNNNY GIRL revival (its first on Broadway since its debut in 1964) happen. Even if she only does it in a super limited run, she most definitely will want this opportunity even if she has to co-produce it herself. This could be either at the end of her Las Vegas residency or during a hiatus, which ALL artists who ha
Don't forget fans of Lady Miss Kier of Deee-lite who Lady Gaga also blatantly ripped-off.
Bro, no one is a bigger fan of Lady Miss Kier and Deee-Lite than I am and you are SO off the mark on this in every possible way. Lady Gaga hasn’t emulated Lady Miss Kier in any way: their singing styles, their music and even their costumes in no way have any connection. There’s a reason why this comparison has NEVER been made as there is NO comparison. &nb
Grande can’t act her way out of a paper bag. Sad how she just sings the song without any connection to the lyrics. She even adds the nuanced bits from the cast recording as her “acting.
Due to public streets, you’ll be able to see the arrivals from areas that are barricaded. Opening Night curtain is usually earlier than normal (6:30pm is the norm) to not interfere with other theatres in the parameter who have running shows. To keep things moving, red carpet step-n-repeat is monitored to celebrities only. The general public attending won’t be permitted in that area.
If they directed the actors to “bring down” the theatrics for the video, this was a colossal idea. This video has no life. It’s so flat and unexciting. EVITA can be delivered hard and explosive without worrying about being “too much” for any promo footage. EVITA lends itself to that which is how all clips and performances have always been done this way on television. All footage shown on TV of LuPone in the original Broadway production featured her pe
Of course Cher will be in attendance as she’s not only the subject of the show but she’s also one of the producers. People expect her to be there and she will.
Also, due to her expansive career (TV, film and music) expect a vast roster of friends in attendance as well. Expect Bette Midler, Meryl Streep, Kathy Griffin, David Geffen and many others to be at Opening Night. I plan to be there as well.
Geez. The musical just had their first public preview performance and you guys are dissecting every detail as if the show was running for 3 weeks.
They’re taking a couple of days off so it’s obvious the creative team has intended from the get-go that they plan to address countless stuff of the material during this tryout.
Last night was their first test of Version 1. Today they are heavily breaking down what worked and what didn’t and changes
I could see them have a stand-up show together in a Broadway theater.
Both Megan and Nick come from a stage background. They both have never been stand-up comedians therefore it’s a platform they both would never consider doing. I just asked Megan (via DM).
Perfectly stated, Mister Matt. Grande’s participation in HAIRSPRAY: Live! looked great on paper for NBC/Universal in every way you looked at it but she colossally failed miserably and what could have been a great opportunity for her to shine only showcased everything you stated. Even after months of rehearsals she had no grasp of the Penny Pingleton character. God only knows how bad she must have day at the start of rehearsals and what we saw was tons of training by many. I feel Lady Ga
Casting the lead with a newbie, so to speak, they will definitely will be casting the rest of the roles with big name talent. I think it’s safe to assume Jennifer López will be the film’s Daniela.
The production was too big for the stage and the orchestra was cut down to synthesizers.
I'm sure this was because of a musician's strike that took place around that time. Many more strikes took place within a few years of each other so synthesizers were used in place of a live orchestra. I remember seeing the 2nd tour of FOSSE with midi-file versions of the music replacing the full orchestra. It just completely devalued anything magica
