In 1982 and 1985 respectively, she made a pair of appearances at the Milwaukee Melody Top; firstly in a charming and well-sung Meet Me in St. Louis, and then 3 years later as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. Many years later, in 1995, she was part of a rehashed ensemble - several too old for their roles - in DOA State Fair. She still sang well, but too old for the ingénue.

Oh, for the days when I witnessed Anna Neagle, Rex Harrison, Tommy Steele, Colin Blakely, Michael Crawford, Janet Suzman, Nigel Davenport, Michael Gambon, Nigel Hawthorne, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Wilfred Hyde White, John Mills, Jill Bennett, Ralph Richardson, Celia Johnson, Donald Sinden, Maggie Smith, Robert Stephens, Edward Fox, Judi Dench, Richard Johnson, Deborah Kerr, Paul Scofield, Ben Kingsley, Glynis Johns and Kenneth More trod those well-worn British boards...

Anyone still thinking Will Chase is a disappointing choice should have been subjected to Rex Smith in the 2002 tour. Completely unacceptable.

I saw her in August 1994 at the then-Shubert Theatre in Chicago. It was the final performance. I was there as part of a theater party for The Chicago Drama League. After the curtain call, we waited for a brief time for her to come back out on stage in order for her to present some large, fake diamonds to some members of the group. In the meantime, the company manager stood on stage and answered any questions we had. Then she emerged, completely dressed in black, and after a minute

Only saw her on stage once, and that was in London in 1977 in a play called Cause Celebre. Both she and the play - an enveloping courtroom drama - were excellent.
