Anyone there last night or tonight?

Be More Chill Off-Broadway  Jul 27 2018, 02:40:56 PM
It is, absolutely. My point was more that it was left ambiguous in the original book of the show, and I get the vibe that now that the creative team has realized the power of the fandom they created, the ambiguity has made it very easy to pander. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth, especially because Michael is a fan favorite character and I hate to see him used as cheap half-baked representation. Apologies that my original wording was unclear.

I think you (global you, not you specifically) also have to put some blame on the bookwriter Joe Tracz, who's gone from "any headcanons you have about characters' sexualities, whether they're gay or straight or bi or pan or whatever, are great!" to "Be More Chill Off-Broadway  Jul 27 2018, 10:50:01 AM

I have a very basic grasp of the show and it’s plot, and don’t particularly consider myself a fan, but I talk

MrsSallyAdams:

Your recollection is absolutely correct. Reading the book is an interesting experiment because the musical keeps the characters and the basic premise but is a functionally different work. It improves on the novel in pretty much every way but there are places, like developing Christine and having a compelling reason for why Jeremy would want to go out with her, where it doesn't do enough.

In regards to MITBR, I always feel like George really overacts that song. I, too, have struggled with my own mental health demons, but I much preferred Ben Platt's performance of those issues, as it was a less-is-more approach. When you start screaming and pounding the floor, it loses all emotional resonanc

A very succinct explanation is that Be More Chill is a show about high school losers who, through circumstances (sort of) out of their control, become involved in crazy events--plot-wise, it'sis basically halfway between Dear Evan Hansen and Little Shop of Horrors. Since the show is set in high school and deals with issues that affect young people (popularity, friends, being true to yourself/peer pressure, etc.), wi

I agree 100%-- he's endlessly supportive of Jeremy pursuing Christine and doesn't come off as jealous/pining after Jeremy at all in the show as originally written. I'm totally fine with them say

Be More Chill Off-Broadway  Jul 26 2018, 09:16:09 PM

Same here, Gink. I don't want pandering to the fanbase. Confirming that Michael's gay is nothing, but going in for a lip lock with Jeremy during Two Player Game? Yeesh. I can't imagine how that's choreographed to make sense but I'm sure the Fandom will eat it up.

"Expensive Headphones" and "Boyf" are two of the names the fandom has given their "ships," which is basically the fandom imagining two characters being in a romantic relationship. By saying that either of the ships are now "canon" means the book has been revised so that the two characters in question are explicitly in a relationship.

Setting aside that I've purged all the ship names from my memory, I'm assuming at least part of this is "Jeremy/Michael is canon." So, wait, what about it is canon? That Michael is definitely gay and definitely pining after Jeremy? Or that they actually get together at some point in the show? Because the fact that pretty much every action Jeremy takes in the show is driven by a desi

More than likely this is a short run to consolidate the fanbase/boost the profile of the show and give people who wish to produce it at their high school/community theater group a frame of reference on how to do so.

I'm seeing this August 5. I'm a fan of the show and the material-- I'm right in that late high school-college age demographic the show appeals to and a recovering member of the online Fandom™ --and I'm excited to see it live (especially with about half of the original cast returning), but I will pray/think good thoughts for those of you who are interested in the show and don't know about how rabid the fanbase is. Looking forward (in a kind of masochistic way) to
