Rant about the 2018 TONY nominations here May 1

I don’t understand how TBV got so many nominations. I’m ready for the swarm of people that are going to show up at my door with pitchforks for saying it, but what about it was really that good? I get it’s a weak season but still. There are a few redeeming moments in the score but why does the book deserve to win? There isn’t even real plot with a beginning, middle, and end. It’s just starts and keeps going until it ends. Katrina was good, but in my opinion nowhere close to Hailey Kilgore, who ga

I loved Mean Girls & agree that she was the best part. I still laugh thinking about some of her lines!

I'm sorry I legit laughed out loud as this. I didn't like Bright Star as much as many others did but I do understand why people liked parts of it, especially Carmen. However out of all of the women in that category that year, she deserved it the least. Any of those 5 performances are miles above any of the leading actr
I'm hoping that we get a lot of Once On This Island love this year! I haven't heard a lot about My Fair Lady yet and Carousel seems to be underwhelming everyone. I was nervous that OOTI, an amazing reinterpretation of an already underrated show, would get overshadowed by big revivals of classics (I.e. Falsettos and Hello Dolly). Thankfully, this season has been pretty weak and I'm sure we can count on a bunch of acting nominations and possibly even wins. I'm sure Hailey,
Might just be me, but I don't see The Band's Visit getting a ton of Tony love. I saw it and just didn't get it. Katrina and Tony were good at best, and the music and book were both awful. No memorable songs at all, everything felt so boring. I went back and listened to the whole cast recording and the only songs tolerable were Omar Sharif and Welcome to Nowhere. Could someone explain to me what is so revolutionary and great about it?
- Kristin Chenoweth for On The 20th Century (Kelli's performance in the King and I was nowhere as insane as Kristin's)
- Gavin Creel for She Loves Me (only reason Daveed won is because of his dual role. If he only played one or the other character, no chance he would have won.)
- Andrew Rannells in Falsettos (Gavin wasn't doing anything special in Dolly)
I noticed that The Band's Visit is the first new musical opening this season, and I haven't seen a ton (or any) buzz about it. It got raves and won tons of awards Off Bway, and the song they released sounds pretty good. This seems like it will either totally hit the mark or miss it, sold out or closed by New Years. What do you guys think?
I know they're trying to cast an unknown, but I feel like Cynthia Erivo would slay as Ti Moune. Might feel too obvious, but I can't find one reason why it wouldn't work.
Crazy how different this year is than last. Revival, Leading Actress, Choreography, Lighting Design, and Set Design were the only categories that were remotely undecided. Leading Actress less than the others because Cynthia was an obvious frontrunner, but no one would have been shocked if Phillipa or Jessie won. This year, basically everything is up in the air (except Leading Actor & Actress and Revival, which will 100% go to Mr. Platt, Queen Midler, and Dolly). <
I just listened to the What's Inside (Sara Bareillles' concept album for Waitress) for the first time in a while. I remember how much I adored Door Number Three before the cast album came out and I only listened to that, which replaced it with What Baking Can Do. I still think Door Number Three is better, though I understand why they changed it. Which do you guys like better?
How is the partial view at the Shubert, and for Dolly in particular? I see partial view seats for my desired date for not a fortune. I don't recall the Shubert seeming to have a lot of bad seating. Thanks in advance for help.
Feels so good to be back on BWW! I am (finally) coming into the city and able to see a show over 4/1-3, and I have no clue what to see. I'm looking for a musical from this Bway season with good Tony buzz. I would see SITPWG but there are very few tickets, and I want to see something that's gonna be up for a bunch of Tonys. We've already seen DEH and loved it (who doesn't?), and some things I've thought of are Anastasia, Miss Saigon, and Come From Away. Not sure if I
I think we can all agree that Cynthia deserved the Tony last year (I do, having seen all the nominees for Best Leading Actress), but beyond her, it was a pretty tight season. So who would have won if she wasn't in the race?
The nominees would have definitely been:
Phillipa Soo - Hamilton
Jessie Mueller - Waitress
Carmen Cusack - Bright Star
Laura Benanti - She Loves Me
(and replacing Cynthia) Audra McDonald - Shuffle Along
