Way to early 2018 Tony Awards predictions!  Dec 11 2017, 06:40:18 PM
For me it was mostly Mama Will Provide. I thought he was stellar. Not only was his singing great but I thought the theatricality fit the role as well. I also was sitting near where he was singing much of the show and I think that may have influenced me because I felt like I noticed a lot of nuances in his performance from being so close.

Bear in mind I did not see Lea Salonga as she was out.

Well, I leave in the morning and am very happy with my decisions!  Not a bad one in the bunch.

Thursday night:  The Band's Visit.  I told my friends that although it's a word I never use, my best description for the score is "enchanting."  What a lovely musical.  I am so happy I got the chance to see it.

Friday night:  The Show that Goes Wrong.  So hilarious!  I laughed so hard my stomach hurt the whole time.

People Leaving at Intermission  Dec 11 2017, 12:37:49 AM

I just have to share my Escape to Margaritaville story.  It includes an end of Act I spoiler, so I'll use the toggle.  Only click for "spoilers" if you've seen it or don't want to know the end of act I "cliffhanger."  (It's not exactly a plot driven show, but you've been warned.)

I sat next to an EXTREMELY annoying couple who sang along the whole time, even at very inappropriate moments.  (They weren't on their own in

I just saw this tonight and I agree I'd be thrilled if any of them were nominated. For me the standout was Alex Newell. He blew me away and it surprised me. He and Hailey were the

Thank  you!  I did not know that.

When she sang “Omar Sharif” my heart melted into a puddle. I don’t think it reformed until I had to get up and walk out of the theater. That was the moment the show went from good to great for me.

After seeing The Band’s Visit tonight, I have to think it will win score. (I would hope best musical as well, but I know Frozen will be a commercial powerhouse...)

But it got me thinking,,, how many shows will really be up for score, as it stands now? I assume Frozen is the songs from the movie, so it wouldn’t be eligible would it?  And I’ve seen people mention Escape to Margaritaville, but weren’t most of those songs preexisitng as well? I k

A big thanks for the recommendation for The Band’s Visit. I saw it tonight and it was simply beautiful. With everything going on in the world, it was so nice to see a warm tale of people with different backgrounds coming together. And that score was unbelievably gorgeous, combined with exquisite performances. I am very glad I didn’t miss this one!  I think it will stick with me for awhile.

I loved really watching the band in particular during their solos. So

You know what? I was thinking of the Cadillac palace. My bad. I've only sat in the orchestra of the Oriental.

If you're in row A I would say dress circle. Its lower and therefore slightly closer When get farther back less so because I prefer not to have the overhang in my vision. But that shouldn't be an issue in A.

Gender and Roles  Dec 7 2017, 12:00:24 AM
I think there's a difference between casting someone who identifies as a woman in a female role and rewriting the role (and potentially dialogue) as a man. The original question was about the latter, which changes the work in a way the former (in my view) does not. You can't legally make artistic changes to a work without permission, which isn't to say that such permission would never be granted. (And some licenses may not even place restrictions on gender of some roles to begin with--although

I was in the exact same boat. I have never seen an episode of the cartoon and have absolutely no desire to lose that much time in my life, but when I saw the reviews start to come in, I went via Lottery (how bad could it be for $30, right?).

Let me just say that I had

What is the longest Telecharge usually takes to email tickets?  Dec 6 2017, 08:44:06 PM
I'm surprised. I've spoken with telecharge several time and had great experiences. Three times I forgot my tickets and they had them reprinted at will call. Took 5 minutes. Now I always have them held at will call because clearly I have a problem...

What is the longest Telecharge usually takes to email tickets?  Dec 5 2017, 08:07:13 PM
I once had it take like 2 weeks. It was a show several months away so it didn't even dawn on me that I hadnt gotten them until they showed up in my email and I thought "didn't I buy those like 2 weeks ago?".

That was a show that hadn't yet begun previews so that may have affected things.

Enough with the onslaught of jukebox shows!  Dec 5 2017, 08:04:31 PM

To clarify, I understand ABBA is very popular. But I think of it as dance music. I wouldn't expect dance music to be fodder for a musical. I was referring to the nature of the music, not it's popularity.

"Ranking" theater critics/publications  Dec 5 2017, 03:26:50 AM

Being from Chicago, I have read the most reviews from Chris Jones and therefore usually read the tribune first (well, after the NYT).  It’s not that he’s the greatest critic ever (though he’s pretty good) or that I agree with him the most. But I find that by reading the same reviewer who has reviewed a lot of shows I have seen, I can usually get a sense of whether I’ll like the show or not from the nature of his criticism, even if I might not agree with it. So for

Enough with the onslaught of jukebox shows!  Dec 5 2017, 01:42:15 AM

I still think it’d weird that of all the musical acts, it was ABBA that really increased the popularity of jukebox musicals. (Maybe they existed before but I think they became more popular after... all though that doesn’t mean it CAUSED the increase in popularity I guess.)

I used to think I hated jukebox musicals. I’ve since realized I just hated Mamma Mia. I liked many of the others. Not everything has to be serious art or have brilliant lyrics. It’s ok to make

Ahhh I see thanks. Like I said I’ve been gone for awhile. I noticed the sales were pretty decent this week and last. Prob because it’s closing. At any rate I don’t think family shows have it any more difficult than any other show. The success of many shows on broadway show there’s an audience for it. Whether a musical made from a cartoon will speak to them

Then how do you explain Charlie and the Chocolate Factory?  No snark intended.  I just heard that show was awful and after being away for 6 months, I was surprised to come back and see it still playing...

Back to Spongebob, I am surprised to hear many people enjoy it.  I find the cartoon annoying, so I haven't seen it, and have no desire to, but I wi

Just looked up The Band's Visit and for some reason I thought it was something totally different.  Maybe I was thinking of Bandstand from last season or something, but this looks really interesting and different.  I think I'll have to catch that!

ETA:  Glad I asked when I did!  I checked and the only day with non-premium seats left is Thursday night.  I snapped one up so I will definitely be going.  Now I just need to decide whether to see Miss Sai
