i'm an idiot who just accidentally bought a pair on TDF for Wednesday 7/19 - was planning to rush tomorrow, and while getting some other tix on TDF i saw it listed and jumped on it - figured i'd save the trip...
If anyone here is not previously committed on Wednesday, feel free to message me about it.
I feel like there is a distinct difference between worst musicals and musicals one dislikes, which are not always the same.
I DISLIKE Carousel intensely for so so many reasons. More recently, i really did not enjoy Once (i found it slow moving, thought the characters had a lack of chemistry, and i did not feel that the stylized movement integrated with the story).
However, I think Brooklyn was a badly written, ill
NEWTON'S CRADLE was my pick for Best of Fest. 'Best' is such a relative term, but this show had that magic quality of, Wow, i haven't seen THIS before. Thoughtful, fragmented, beautifully designed and performed with interesting music throughout, and a good STORY, told in a non-linear fashion, but in a way that made you want to figure out the puzzle without feeling like it had gone off the rails. The weakest point to me was the final song, which felt like the s
Sorry to be so delayed, i know the festival is wrapping up today.
I saw STILL READY, the Rob Rokicki concert, which was very good, he's a fantastic young writer, and the 2 editions of WOMEN OF NOTE on offer this year, which were a mix of old and new - we had 'On My Way' from VIOLET and a song from A MAN OF NO IMPORTANCE, mixed with new work by up and coming writers. I noticed fewer writers were present this year, although some were th
FOREST BOY: A lovely arty ensemble piece, with creative lyrical movement/choreography. I found the music very pretty, and the story was interesting. I think the parts leading up to when we find out the truth were far more interesting than when we do find out about Ray's background. (Full confession, i was late to this show, and thus distracted at the start, which may have impacted my enjoyment.) It's shorter than listed, just about 90 minutes, no intermissio
Not sure if no one is seeing NYMF this year, or just no one (else) is talking about it, but since last weekend, here's what i've seen:
ULTIMATE MAN: this got what seemed to be a lot of negative attention, but i think i liked it more than most, if it lacked polish (and inexplicably threw in too many not terribly witty current political jokes) it had charm.. but it didn't really break any new ground, and was too long. It was enjoyable for what
We saw it last night, and it's BRILLIANT. I cannot imagine that this is not going to have a longer life elsewhere, this sorta feels like the out-of-town (up-town?) try out. Couldn't be much better, smart, fast, funny. The whole cast was great, but Nora Schell as EVERY woman is a force to be reckoned with. (imean, DAMN, all 3 Schuyler sisters at once..!)
don't want to spoil too much, but 'another hundred syllables came out of his brain...' is so SO right.
BROOKLYN. #1 all time pick. The show that made forever nervous about intermissionless shows as it became rapidly clear that they'd lose 1/2 the audience if given a chance. I will (unfortunately) never forget being held hostage through:
I got Brooklyn in the blood racing through my veins/roamin through my body like a subway train. Brooklyn in the blood, diamonds in my eyes / it's a way of life, it's the way I'm gonna die.
for the rundown on HFF 16: http://www.hollywoodfringe.org/ Lots of good fun stuff there, most of it under 90 minutes and most of it $15 or less.

BOY FROM OZ is extended into early July, and i believe, totally s
Thanks for the info! My husband went by today at 11:30 and got 2 rush seats for the 6pm, far to the side, row D - the guy next to us got his late in the afternoon. We moved back about 10 rows to get a better view, no one seemed to mind.
The show is a blast, the kids are great, and Alex is AMAZING!
There is an essay at the start of his 2nd book of collected plays, it definitely not an introduction in the commonly meant sense of the word - but then again, it's kind of a perfect introduction.
You can read a lot of it here, on the sample that Amazon lets you see.
it is killing me that i'm not going to be in NYC during the run of this show.
Definitely polarizing, offensive, violent, disturbing, and crazy f#$%ing beautiful. I'd be shocked if no one walked out.
I saw it a few years ago in LA on a 2nd hand friend's recommendation. Right before i went, i read an LA Times review that basically said it was vile and repellent and anyone who liked it was mentally ill. (something like that). When i got to the 99 seat theatre, there were NO
I liked this a LOT. Thank heaven for sincerity and positivity. A lovely country-tinged musical aout 3 generations (single Grandma, single Mom, and son) living in a trailer park trying to make ends meet, and a new man who moves in wanting to spend time alone... which of course doesn't happen as he gets drawn into the community. (it's pretty clear early on that he is a combat vet dealing wit
i think the best edition NYMF has put together for this series - i think it's the 3rd or 4th year for it (it was called Music Box in the past). Jen Bender and her team and honorary chair Jeanine Tesori put together an awesome night of songs written or co-written by women, and got some great star power to perform it.
A 5 person operetta-like retelling of FRANKENSTEIN. Disclaimer: opera is NOT my thing. At all. 2nd disclaimer: i left at intermission. Not because i hated it, but i knew it wasn't going anywhere that would make me like it more.
That said, from the start the lyrics were not strong, forced rhymes, prosod
