Rigoletto, jester to the Duke of Mantua, a depraved seducer, secretly safeguards his daughter Gilda from the duke's attentions.

Seduced by the duke, then kidnapped by courtiers who bring her to their master's bedroom, Gilda falls passionately for her inconstant lover, her first love.

Rigoletto feels disgraced, and undertakes to take revenge on the duke, who hastens to ravish other women as soon as Gilda is seduced.

He engages Sparafucile to kill the duke in the middle of the night.

However, Gilda secretly slips into his place the moment the assassin is due to knock, and falls under his blows.

Rigoletto recovers a body which he believes is that of his daughter's lover...
