The director Guy Cassiers has decided to make this gigantic white Carrara marble sculpture measuring 12m x 8m the focal point of his Belgian ‘docudrama’. Both sensual and provocative, this dazzling showcase has sparked much controversy throughout its time with even the centre-wing conservatives deeming it blasphemous and p*rnographic.

The Erwin Mortier signed script is presented in the form of a historical ‘red black and yellow’ epic saga, with an illustrious cortege of figures: King Leopold II, architect Victor Horta, anarchistic and openly homosexual writer Georges Eekhoud. Accompanying them are the topics of human tragedy in accordance with social, ethical and ideological disputes, casting a critical eye over what we have come to understand as norms and values, relationships (often secret and deceitful), passion and death.

Not to mention power. More specifically, monarchic and ecclesiastic power which, through the history of this provocative performance, will impose its dogmas upon us. But at what cost? The answer, in fact, lies within the sculpted design of this artwork which is being shown in both French and Dutch which, in the words of Guy Cassiers, "encapsulates both the pleasure and misfortune of humanity under the inquisitive eye of death". An undoubtedly Belgian achievement brimming with splendor, misery, grandeur and decadence.
