The Swedish King Gustaf III. enjoys great popularity, the majority of the nobility as well as the people. Only the count Horn, Warting and their followers seek him life. Count René Ankarström, the most faithful friend of the King, and facing an audience, Gustaf on the conspiracy plans the count Horn and Warting. The King wants to know but nothing of these secret activities - he is immortal in Amelia, the wife of Ankarströms falls. Later people and farm State gathered in the dwelling of the fortune teller Ulrica Arvedson pardoned by the King. Amelia also requests an appointment with the fortune teller. She wants a remedy against their love for the King. The hidden listening Gustaf learns that Amelia would have to pick a particular herb even at midnight at the execution site. He decides to follow her. After Amelia leaves the fortune teller, the King can prophesy the future: he learns that he must soon die, killed by those who would reach out to him next. Since appears Ankarström and presses his hand to welcome the King. At midnight, Amelia and Gustaf come together at the execution site, but also Ankarström, which does not recognize his deeply veiled wife, suddenly appears, to warn the King of the conspirators. He undertakes attributed the veiled Lady at the gate without looking at them, or to discuss them. Gustaf leaves the two to save his life. There appear the plotters and Amelia must unmask - as Ankarström realizes that he has been cheated and joins the conspirators. At the later held ball Festival succeeds Ankarström the King, who had decided to refrain from Amelia, mortally wound with his dagger. Dying, forgives him the King and asserts Amelia's honor to have not violated.
