The ARTS At Marks Garage Announces A Spoken Dance Work In Progress

A preview performance of The Good Manners of Colonized Subjects, a spoken dance performance by Shebana Coelho, will be held Wednesday, October 10 at 7:00 pm at The ARTS at Marks Garage (1159 Nu'uanu Avenue ). Coelho is a writer and director originally from India, now based in New Mexico.
Through poetry, flamenco-based choreography and gestures drawn from Sanksrit classical theatre, The Good Manners of Colonized Subjects interweaves dance and memoirs of colonization and liberation, circling towards a cathartic re-imagining of that moment indigenous to the species: the incandescent experience of art.
The 75 minute performance will be followed by an interactive Q&A. There is limited seating. The tickets price is $10 in advance $15 at the door.

Coelho is also facilitating a workshop at the Still & Moving Center (1024 Queen Street) on October 6 at 2:45 pm. Write out Loud: Dance your Silence - a spoken dance/creativity workshop to mine the resonant silences within and transform them into performance poems. Inspired by stories & songs of different cultures - faraway and close - in a safe nurturing environment, participants will be guided to imagine, dance, write, speak and create short embodied choreo-poems that awaken the stories indigenous to them, the stories only they can tell. The cost is $45.

Both the workshop and performance are part of an umbrella cross-cultural collective, Faraway is Close, that seeks to connect communities and cultures through interactive and creative programs in film, theater and dance.
ABOUT THE ARTIST: Shebana Coelho is a filmmaker, writer and performer originally from India, now based in Santa Fe. Most recently, she directed and produced "Nasario remembers the Río Puerco," a film about landscape and memory, which had its broadcast premiere on New Mexico PBS/KNME in October 2017. She received a Fiction fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts and a Fulbright research grant to Mongolia. She studied Sanskrit theatre techniques in India, at Natanakairali (Kerala) with Venuji as part of the Navarasa Sadhana workshop experience and at Adishakti Theatre Arts (Pondicherry). She has been studying flamenco in Santa Fe and Spain since 2012. Most recently, she studied with Alice Blumenfeld in New Mexico and Flamenco La Fuente (Granada, Spain).
