TNC to Present AMERICA'S FAVORITE NEWSCASTER This Winter

Theater For the New City (TNC) presents the world premiere engagement of AMERICA'S FAVORITE NEWSCASTER, a new musical with book and lyrics by Tom Attea, music by Arthur Abrams, and directed by Mark Marcante (the creative team behind the acclaimed Heather Smiley For President, Living in a Musical, An American Worker, etc.). AMERICA'S FAVORITE NEWSCASTER has choreography by Angela Harriell.

AMERICA'S FAVORITE NEWSCASTER will play a limited 4-week engagement, running Thursday, January 4, 2018 through Sunday, January 28, 2018 at Theater For the New City (155 1st Avenue, between East 9th and East 10th Streets, NYC). Opening Night is Thursday, January 18, 2018 (8PM).

AMERICA'S FAVORITE NEWSCASTER is a new American musical about a young, highly rated TV journalist, struggling to maintain his famously calm yet fearlessly insightful demeanor while dealing with the challenges of today's news cycle.

Says book writer Tom Attea, "Having previously written copy for WABC-TV News, the Village Voice, Time magazine, and other outlets, I have a tremendous respect for those who dedicate their lives to reporting the news. This respect, especially given the unprecedented challenges they face - not only the widespread human suffering on which they must report, but also the almost-daily affronts emanating from Washington - inspired me to do what I can to give journalists a voice on the stage at this time. I think they could really use it."

AMERICA'S FAVORITE NEWSCASTER will be performed on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00PM and Sundays at 3:00PM. Tom Attea (book and lyrics) America's Favorite Newscaster is the 14th produced show that Tom as written, beginning with Brief Chronicles of the Time, which was presented as a showcase by The Actors Studio, where he was a member of The Playwrights Unit for 10 years. Since then, he has written the book and lyrics for 11 musicals and two plays that have been presented by Theater for the New City. Two the musicals, Heather Smiley for President and Abstinence, are published by Rebel Belle Publishing. Tom is a published poet. He's also one of America's most award-winning copywriters, having won four Clios in one night, Gold and Silver Lions from Cannes, the Gold Telly, the Gold Mobius, LinkedIn's Best of Copywriting for 2016, and many other creative awards. Tom received a TNC/Jerome Foundation emerging playwright grant and is a member of The Dramatists Guild.

Arthur Abrams (Composer) began his frequent collaboration with Tom Attea at The Actors Studio, while they were working with director Charles Friedman on the revue Brief Chronicles of the Time. His last three collaborations with Tom were the musicals An American Worker, Heather Smiley for President and The Folk Singer.? In June 2018, TNC will present a revival of the musical The Open Gate,? with music composed by Mr. Abrams and book by David Willinger, ?based on the novel The Manor by Isaac BashevisA. Singer. In July of 2016, a ballet, The Velveteen Rabbit, with music by Mr. Abrams, premiered at the Hartt School of Music of the University of Hartford. Mr. Abrams also composed and directed music for the Yiddish Theater documentary film T?he Golden Age of Second Avenue, often shown on Public TV. He has been honored with numerous awards, including a DAAD music fellowship to Mannheim, Germany, a scholarship to the Orff Institute at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria, and a Meet the Composer grant for the score of The Golden Bear. He is a member of the Dramatists Guild.

Mark Marcante (Director) has directed Rizzante Returns From the War, Benny's Barber Shop, Promises Best Kept, British Music Hall, Strangely Wonderful and One Director Against His Cast, written by Crystal Field, which premiered in Italy. This is the 11th musical by Tom Attea and Arthur Abrams that Mark has directed. He also directed two straight plays by Attea. He worked and toured with The People's Theater Company, Theater East and The Guthsville Playhouse. Mr. Marcante was the theatrical and technical consultant for the Arts Connection. He is a graduate of Kutztown University, studied and performed Commedia Dell'arte with Alessandro Bressanello and Michael Conenna from the T.A.G Theatre of Venice.

Angela Harriell (Choreographer) has worked with Attea, Abrams, and Marcante on five previous musicals. She is the director and choreographer of the popular Nutcracker: Rated R, as well as the founder and choreographer of the theatrical dance company The Love Show. Angela has danced with Elisa Monte and David Brown Dance, Randy James Danceworks, Brooklyn Ballet, Opera Francais De New York, The Box, and was a professor teaching ballet at Binghamton University. Cointreau, Vogue magazine, The BBC, and Dom Perignon have commissioned pieces from her. Angela was commissioned to create original choreography for the New York screening of The Antics Roadshow, a new film.

Theater For the New City (TNC) is a Pulitzer Prize winning community cultural center that is known for its high artistic standards and widespread community service. One of New York's most prolific theatrical organizations, TNC produces 30-40 premieres of new American plays per year, at least 10 of which are by emerging and young playwrights. Many influential theater artists of the last quarter century have found TNC's Resident Theater Program instrumental to their careers, among them Sam Shepard, Moises Kaufman, Richard Foreman, Charles Busch, Maria Irene Fornes, Miguel Piñero, Jean-Claude van Itallie, Vin Diesel, Oscar Nuñez, Laurence Holder, Romulus Linney and Academy Award Winners Tim Robbins and Adrien Brody. TNC also presents plays by multi-ethnic/multi-disciplinary theater companies who have no permanent home. Among the well-known companies that have been presented by TNC are Mabou Mines, The Living Theater, Bread and Puppet Theater, the San Francisco Mime Troupe and COBU, the Japanese women's drumming and dance group. TNC also produced the Yangtze Repertory Company's 1997 production of Between Life and Death, which was the only play ever produced in America by Gao Xingjian before he won the 2000 Nobel Prize for Literature. TNC seeks to develop theater audiences and inspire future theater artists from the often-overlooked low-income minority communities of New York City by producing minority writers from around the world and by bringing the community into theater and theater into the community through its many free Festivals. TNC productions have won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and over 42 OBIE Awards for excellence in every theatrical discipline. TNC is also the only Theatrical Organization to have won the Mayor's Stop the Violence Award.
