Studio Space presents Two Short Plays By Paddy Chayefsky: MARTY And THE MOTHER

Special Event at Studio Space (Formally Warehouse 21), Staged Reading of Two Short Plays by Paddy Chayefsky; Marty and The Mother. Saturday, April 7th at 7:30 PM and Sunday April 8th at 2 PM, 1614 Paseo De Peralta, Santa Fe, NM 87501. Suggested donation is $15 cash or check at the door only.

Featuring Rick Vargas, Danette Sills, Sylvie Oblego, Kathi Collins, Malcom Jamar Morgan, Mary Beth Lindsey, Joseph Anton Carter, Stephen Rommel, Charlene Carroll, Mark Westberg, Ann Roylance, Otgadahe Whitman-Fox, and Aaron Leventman.

Marty is a 1953 television play first telecast live May 24, 1953, on The Philco Television Playhouse with Rod and Nancy Marchand. Chayefsky's story is of a decent, hard-working Bronx butcher, pining for the company of a woman in his life but despairing of ever finding true love in a relationship. The teleplay was adapted into the feature film starring Ernest Borgnine in 1955. The film won both the Academy Award for Best Picture and the Palme d'Or award at the Cannes Film Festival and Borgnine won the Oscar for best actor.

The Mother is a critically acclaimed episode of the TV anthology series with Maureen Stapleton then remade in the 90s with Anne Bancroft, Anne Meara, and Joan Cusack. Played out in park benches in the Bronx, it deals with the struggles faced by worried children and aging parents while addressing issues of race and class.

Paddy Chayefsky (author) is the only person to have won three solo Academy Awards for Best Screenplay for Marty (1955), The Hospital (1971) and Network (1976). He was considered one of the most renowned dramatists of the so-called Golden Age of Television. Following his critically acclaimed teleplays, Chayefsky continued to succeed as a playwright and novelist.

Maura Studi (Director), wife of Wes Studi (Hostiles, Last of the Mohicans, Avatar) and daughter of Jack Albertson (Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory) has acting credits that include NBC and CBS programs. She wrote the screenplay for the documentary A Thousand Voices recently shown on PBS. She previously directed The Subject Was Roses at the Santa Fe Playhouse in 2008, has acted in several Benchwarmers productions, and currently teaches acting classes as Teatro Paraguas.

Aaron Leventman (producer) has been working with Maura Studi to bring staged readings of famous plays to Santa Fe audiences for the last two years. He's also acted with most of the local theatre companies and appeared in industrials, commercials, short films, and features.
