Review: SPAMALOT at Planet Royale

Riotous Monty Python based musical has plenty for everyone

Review: SPAMALOT at Planet Royale

What has four legs and makes a clip-clop noise as it walks? Why, a king and his servant of course. Monty Python’s SPAMALOT is every bit as absurd as its base material, expanded into a full musical, and exquisitely brought to life by Drew Anthony creative. SPAMALOT has catchy songs, excellent performances, outstanding choreography, and humour from clever to crude. If you’re after a complete night out, grab two halves of a coconut and head to Planet Royale.

Whilst Monty Python and the Holy Grail has many memorable moments and indeed contributes greatly to SPAMALOT, the musical has so much added that it can be considered separate to the movie. Indeed, whilst many jokes are recognisable, there are so many new jokes that even the most dedicated fans of Python will find new things to laugh at, and that’s ignoring the craft of the performers who can extract humour from even the most predictable of situations. Of course, it wouldn’t be in the realm of Monty Python if it was predictable, and some of the jokes, plots, and songs are so absurd you can’t help but laugh. To deliver it lovingly is one thing, but to deliver it deadpan is something else, and I can’t imagine how many rehearsals it took for the cast to be able to maintain a straight face.

Indeed, the cast is a talented slew of Perth based performers. As King Arthur is Chris McCafferty, a perfectly deadpan king and an excellent anchor for the show’s absurdity. Holly Easterbrook is the Lady of the Lake, a part which has its relative insignificance in the traditional tale dealt with by songs such as ‘Diva’s Lament (Whatever Happened to My Part?)’. Such songs and moments play right into Easterbrook’s talents and leave you laughing and applauding in equal measure. As Patsy, King Arthur’s squire/assistant/de facto horse, is Jamie Rolton. Rolton and McCafferty bounce off each other in an entertaining way, a contrast highlighted in the song ‘I’m All Alone,’ which is one of the more humorous parts of the show. Ethan Battle as Sir Robin, Jamie Papanicolaou as Sir Galahad, Noah Scape as Sir Belvedere, and Jake Tolich as Sir Belvedere all lean right into their knight’s respective traits, and they demonstrate such comic timing that one comes to expect big laughs when they’re all on stage.

For a show (and source material) renowned for the many parts that so many characters play, it is impossible to go past the talented ensemble featuring Zac Porter, Izzi Green, Will Basson, Jessica Jones, Ethan Churchill, Sophie Psaila-Savona, Dorian Dark, and Tiara Volk. THe many varied parts they all play bring depth to the show, whilst the large dance numbers are quite impressive, with Jamie and Suzi Rolton’s choreography fitting the show perfectly. Annette Stivaletta’s costumes contribute greatly, too, whilst Drew Anthony seems to select shows to fit the unusual setup of Planet Royale, and his directing ensures there is no such thing as a bad seat.

Whilst the plot of the musical differs substantially from the film, there is plenty of fun, humour, and entertainment to keep anyone interested, whilst the well performed song and outstanding choreography remind you enough that SPAMALOT is a musical. Overall, it’s a very entertaining night out whatever your favourite flavour of theater.

SPAMALOT is at Planet Royale until June 7th. Tickets and more information from Drew Anthony Creative.
