Milagro Announces Season 35: Fantasy, Fairy Tales, and Folklore

Milagro, the Northwest's premier Latino arts and culture organization announces Season 35: Fantasy, Fairy Tales, and Folklore, featuring Milagro's annual Día de Muertos celebration, three additional world premieres-including a National New Play Network Rolling World Premiere, a national touring production, and the U.S. premiere of a Spanish-language play from Costa Rica! It is a season of stories of fantastical creatures, great heroes and heroines, mystical monsters, magical beings, and spirits from another world.

Season 35 begins with Milagro's beloved 23rd annual Día de Muertos production. This year it takes inspiration from an imaginary creature unique in Latino artwork: alebrijes! A dream comes to life, born out of one man's dying vision. Alebrijes! follows the real-life story of Mexican artist and alebrijes creator Pedro Linares Lopez, and will be developed and directed by Milagro veteran Georgina Escobar.

Teatro Milagro kicks-off its National Tour with the World Premiere of Judge Torres by Milta Ortiz, about the real-life story of a #MeToo dreamer who traveled from El Salvador to Oregon to become one of Oregon's newest judges. Interwoven with Mayan mythology, the story follows her journey and highlights triumph over adversity.

The Spanish-language show takes us to Costa Rica with the U.S. premiere of La Segua by Alberto Cañas Escalante, which weaves a story of superstition, jealousy, and witchcraft that tackles our societal obsession with youth and beauty.

In the World Premiere of Jump by Charly Evon Simpson, a co-production withConfrontation Theatre, a young girl she seeks solace on the edge of a bridge. But the truth of her intentions becomes all too clear. And now only one question remains: will she take the leap, or will the leap take her?

Finally, the season closes with the National New Play Network Rolling World Premiere of Wolf at the Door, a grim Latino fairy tale by Marisela Treviño Orta. When wild dogs are said to carry the spirits of the dead to the other world, we hear a scratch at the door. Is it that beast of a husband who relishes abuse on women, or is it something more primal?

Milagro will continue to promote the arts beyond what's produced on the Milagro MainStage through many events open to the Portland community.

The popular Christmas celebration presented in Spanish, free for the entire community, features a pastorela, live music and dance, activities for the whole family, food for sale, and the traditional piñata.

COMMUNITY ARTES
Milagro promotes the arts beyond just theatre with tertulia: art + conversation, our salon series of guest Latino/a artists sharing their work in El Zócalo.

GUEST ARTISTS
Milagro will partner with local and regional visual artists to create a unique visual exhibition for each of the five productions.
