Update - Friday, 3:45 PM: Character Names in Disney's INTO THE WOODS Movie Unchanged from Stage Version. Click here for the latest.
The premiere of the feature film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's celebrated fairy tale-themed musical INTO THE WOODS is approaching with a Christmas Day release and the recently updated official website offers some intriguing adjustments to the names of some of the characters depicted.
*UPDATE: On Friday afternoon, the cast of characters list was removed from the official website.
Evident in the changes represented on the cast of characters list as seen on the official website is a pronounced Disney-fication of the monikers of some of the leading players, seemingly as if to align them to their Disney counterparts.
Among the alterations, Christine Baranski is now named Lady Tremaine, whereas in the stage musical she is referred to as Cinderella's Stepmother.
Similarly, Billy Magnussen as Flynn Rider suggests the recent Disney adaptation of classic fairy tale RAPUNZEL as realized in TANGLED.
Additionally, Chris Pine is now billed as Prince Charming as opposed to the stage iteration naming of Cinderella's Prince.
Presumably, Simon Russell Beale given the title of The Baker's Father nee Mysterious Man reflects the slight but nevertheless significant changes in the film's representations of the characters.
Also, Frances De La Tour is The Giant, not The Giant's Wife.
Of note, the film has been rated PG, so evidently mature themes present in the stage version will be retained to some extent, with the first teaser trailer highlighting a dynamic and multi-generational tone, as well.
The official description of INTO THE WOODS is as follows: "Into the Woods" is a modern twist on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the characters' wishes and quests. This humorous and heartfelt musical follows the classic tales of Cinderella (Anna Kendrick), Little Red Riding Hood (Lilla Crawford), Jack and the Beanstalk (Daniel Huttlestone), and Rapunzel (MacKenzie Mauzy) - all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife (James Corden & Emily Blunt), their wish to begin a family and their interaction with the witch (Meryl Streep) who has put a curse on them. Rob Marshall, the talented filmmaker behind the Academy Award®-winning musical "Chicago" and Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," helms the film, which is based on the Tony®-winning original musical by James Lapine, who also penned the screenplay, and legendary composer Stephen Sondheim, who provides the music and lyrics. Produced by Marshall, John DeLuca, "Wicked" producer Marc Platt and Callum McDougall, "Into the Woods" hits theaters December 25, 2014."
