Derek Bermel And Wendy S. Walter's Golden Motors Chosen For BRIClab Residencies

Longtime collaborators Grammy nominated composer Derek Bermel and acclaimed author Wendy S. Walters have joined forces in a new evening length music-theater work Golden Motors, which has been chosen for a coveted BRIClab residency program for spring 2019, performance will be April 18 & 19 at 7pm at the Artist Studio at BRIC House.

Set in 1980s Detroit, this compelling original narrative takes place during the collapse of the American automobile industry. Golden Motors' story highlights the struggles of working-class people trying to safeguard their future against enormous economic odds. When a murder at a Detroit automobile plant sets off an unexpected chain of events, security guard Henry Loving is forced to confront risks and rewards, while his friends, co-workers, and daughter Charisse forge uncertain paths towards opportunity. It is a uniquely American tale - of love and despair, violence and reconciliation, inaction and heroism - in an era of swiftly changing rules and expectations.

Both the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, NJ and Reed College in Portland, OR have hosted readings of Golden Motors, both which have been directed by Broadway veteran Johanna McKeon. The work also received early support from Opera America, the Cary Trust for workshops at the Flea Theater, and a concert performance of excerpts at Symphony Space NYC as part of VOX.

BRIClab is a commissioning and residency program that offers local artists time and space to explore and expand the possibilities of their work in music, dance, theater, and multidisciplinary performance. Work-in-progress showings, presented with moderated artist-audience dialogues, open artists' process and creativity to BRIC's diverse public. The season deepens the organization's inclusive approach to both local and global discussions, and the places where they intersect.
