DICE RAW Brings Story Of Runaway Slave To Life In New Hip Hop Musical At The Arsht

The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County (@arshtcenter) is proud to commission and present the hip-hop musical Henry "Box" Brown at the Carnival Studio Theater from January 10-12. The musical tells the gripping true story of an African-American slave, Henry 'Box' Brown, and his journey to freedom.

"Fulfilling the Arsht Center's mission to provide our community with transformational cultural experiences, we are compelled and gratified to support the creation of new work," said Liz Wallace, vice president of programming at the Arsht Center. "Karl 'Dice Raw' Jenkins has immense musical skills, passion and a flair for storytelling and an unstoppable need to create."

Henry 'Box' Brown, a slave who escaped to freedom by mailing himself from Virginia to Philadelphia in a wooden box, is played by five-time Grammy nominated songwriter and producer Karl "Dice Raw" Jenkins of the legendary Roots crew.

Before the musical hits the stage, dozens of Miami-Dade Public School students will have the opportunity to see the show and take part in a series of workshops focused on poetry and hip-hop verse led by Karl "Dice Raw" Jenkins at Florida Memorial University and Young Men's Preparatory Academy from January 7-9. As part of the Arsht Center's community engagement efforts, the workshops aim to spark dialogue and storytelling between students by encouraging them to talk about injustice in society and speak up about their history and stories.

This project is presented with the support of the Arsht Center's Miami Diaspora Fund, made possible in part by a grant from the Jorge M. Pérez Family Foundation at The Miami Foundation, and members of the Miami Diaspora Fund Giving Circle.
