STRAIGHT SHOOTING Set for Music Box's Silent Cinema Series - 9/14/2013

This fall, Music Box Theatre's monthly Second Saturday Silent Cinema series screens a trio of excellent matinees. John Ford's remarkable first picture Straight Shooting - a Western, naturally - bows September 14, followed by Buster Keaton's must-see masterpiece The General on October 12 and the stop-motion sci-fi classic The Lost World on November 9. Named by Chicago magazine as the Best New Film Series of 2011 and hailed by the Chicago Reader's J.R. Jones as one of the best movie matinee series in the city, the Silent Cinema Series is presented the second Saturday of each month at noon. All films are shown authentically in 35mm at proper silent film speed and aspect ratio with live accompaniment by Dennis Scott at the Music Box theatre organ.

TRISTAN AND ISOLDE, MOBY-DICK, THE MAGIC FLUTE and More Set for Washington National Opera's 2013-14 Season - 9/15/2013

The 2013-2014 season of Washington National Opera (WNO) has just been announced by Artistic Director Francesca Zambello. The season includes Tristan and Isolde, a new production of The Force of Destiny, the East Coast premiere of Moby-Dick, The Elixir of Love, and a new production of The Magic Flute. WNO will also present the world premiere of The Lion, The Unicorn, and Me, a holiday-themed family opera commissioned by WNO and written by acclaimed American composer Jeanine Tesori. A second season of the American Opera Initiative will continue WNO's efforts to commission new American works.

Washington National Opera Opens Season with TRISTAN AND ISOLDE - 9/15/2013

Washington National Opera (WNO) opens its 2013-2014 season with a production honoring the 200th birthday of one of opera's most renowned composers: Richard Wagner's Tristan and Isolde, September 15-27 in the Kennedy Center Opera House. This epic romantic drama stars Deborah Voigt as Isolde and Ian Storey and Clifton Forbis as Tristan, and will be seen in a production new to Washington directed by Neil Armfield in his WNO debut. WNO Music Director Philippe Auguin leads the WNO Orchestra in interpreting some of Wagner's most passionate and powerful music.

THE FANTASTICKS Celebrates 20,000th Performance - 9/15/2013

THE FANTASTICKS, the world's longest running musical, will celebrate a record breaking 20,000th New York performance, on Sunday, September 15, 2013, announced producers Catherine Russell and Al Parinello. The milestone will mark the first time a production (on Broadway or off-Broadway) has ever reached 20,000 performances and will be commemorated in a month long celebration that includes performing at Broadway in Bryant Park and Little Italy, and with The Museum of The City of New York's future cyber gallery highlighting the history of the production.

THE WEIR Ends Extended Run at Irish Rep - 9/15/2013

OLD JEWS TELLING JOKES Closes Off-Broadway - 9/15/2013

Producers announced today that off-Broadway's OLD JEWS TELLING JOKES will close on Sunday September 15. It will have played 22 previews and 552 regular performances. As previously announced, a Chicago production will begin performances at the Royal George Theatre on September 24 and open on October 2.

Odyssey Opera Presents Five-Hour Concert of Wagner's RIENZI - 9/15/2013

ODYSSEY OPERA, a new, Boston-based opera company dedicated to presenting adventurous repertoire, debuts Sunday, September 15th at Boston's Jordan Hall offering a five-hour concert performance of Wagner's rarely heard opera "Rienzi." ROCO Begins Chamber Series with Asian Influences - 9/15/2013

River Oaks Chamber Orchestra (ROCO) begins its 2013 - 2014 ROCO Chamber Series on Sunday, September 15 at 4:00 pm with a concert inspired by various Asian cultures titled Asian Influences. This will be the first journey in a season themed Around the World in ROCO Ways and is the first of six chamber concerts planned for this season. The chamber group, comprised of various ROCO musicians, will feature ROCO clarinetist Maiko Sasaki performing music by Debussy, Britten, Bartok and Yamada. NBC to Hold Open Call for Von Trapp Kids in SOUND OF MUSIC - 9/15/2013

Irene Theorin Replaces Deborah Voigt in WNO's TRISTAN AND ISOLDE - 9/15/2013

Washington National Opera (WNO) today announced that Swedish soprano Irene Theorin will sing the role of Isolde in its season-opening production of Richard Wagner's Tristan and Isolde. Ms. Theorin will sing the performances on September 15, 18, 21, and 24. She replaces Deborah Voigt, who has withdrawn from the production. British soprano Alwyn Mellor will sing the final performance on September 27.

LAST GOODBYE Musical to Play Old Globe This Fall - 9/20/2013

The Old Globe will open its 2013-14 Season with The Last Goodbye, a new musical that marries Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and the incendiary songs of the legendary singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley. Eli and Edythe Broad General DirectorPlacido Domingo announced that LA Opera's season-opening production ofCarmen on September 21, 2013, will be broadcast live on a special presentation of 'LA Opera on Air' on Classical KUSC 91.5fm. The performance, which Mr. Domingo will conduct, will feature Irish mezzo-soprano Patricia Bardon as Carmen, tenor Brandon Jovanovich as Don Jose, Italian bass-baritone Ildebrando D'Arcangelo as Escamillo and South African soprano Pretty Yende in her Company debut as Micaela. The production, originally created by Spanish director Emilio Sagi and previously seen in Los Angeles in 2004 and 2008, will be directed by Trevore Ross.

Defending his work against another opera based on the 1731 novel by the Abbe Prevost, Puccini said, "Manon is a heroine I believe in, and therefore she cannot fail to win the hearts of the public. Why shouldn't there be two operas about Manon? A woman like Manon can have more than one lover." He added, "Massenet feels it as a Frenchman, with powder and minuets. I shall feel it as an Italian, with a desperate passion."

Prospect Theater's TAMAR OF THE RIVER Begins Off-Broadway - 9/21/2013

Jeremy Greenbaum (The Fantasticks) and Aaron Komo complete the cast of Prospect Theater Company's upcoming world premiere production of TAMAR OF THE RIVER, a new music theater work with music and book by Marisa Michelson, book and lyrics by Joshua H. Cohen and direction by Daniel Goldstein (Godspell). Previously announced cast members include Margo Seibert (set to make her Broadway debut as 'Adrian' in ROCKY on Broadway in Spring 2014) as Tamar, with Ako (Throne of Blood), Erik Lochtefeld (February House), Mike Longo (Hair) and Vince B. Vincent (Geography of Loss), and Jen Anaya, Adam Bashian, Margot Bassett, Troy Burton, Tamrin Goldberg and Mary Kate Morrissey.
