BWW Previews: KANSAS CITY WOMEN'S CHORUS PRESENTS 'THE CURVE OF TIME' at The Liberty Performing Arts Theater

THE CURVE OF TIME

The Kansas City Women's Chorus previewed their fall concert on Thursday at the Liberty Performing Arts Theatre (a new venue for the group). They have packed a show full of vibrant and inspiring music that may well give you the urge to start dancing in the aisles. As a matter of fact, on the night of the preview there was a child seated in the front row and after warming up to the first few numbers she could contain her joy no longer and was indeed on her feet and moving to the music. With a rich wall of sound the chorus matched her youthful vitality with an array of songs that speak to the wide variety of feelings we all have around the holidays. From the joys of parents celebrating a first holiday season with a newborn, to melancholy memories of missed loved ones, their musical message was one of diverse times and emotions, much like the "curve of time".

There are featured soloists in various numbers who are outstanding singers in addition to The Blue River Brass Quintet that adds a bright resonance to several selections. Filled with moments of laughter (as in the Aluminum Xmas Tree) and fun (like Boogie-Woogie Hanukkah) these women let their light shine bright. Accompanied at the piano by the phenomenal Jan Willbanks and a gifted group of instrumentalists the chorus takes their 18th season to new heights.

With direction by Dr. Cynthia Sheppard, the chorus presents richly connected musicianship exemplifying the best in women's voicing. This is no timid choir, but a powerful chorus that takes intricate harmonies and blends them together with warmth and finesse. Highlighting compositions by Eric Lane Barns, Jan Garrett, Kirby Shaw, Jill Gallina, and Kansas City's own Mark Hayes; they will have you hankering for a "Hotta Chocolatta" while the Bells Jingle out a "Cool Yule". For all the fun, there are plenty of moments for poignant reflection that remind one and all that there really is so much to be thankful for.
