After a successful turn at the Avignon L'Off Festival in France, Anaïs, A Dance Opera, presented by Mixed eMotion Theatrix, comes to Santa Barbara's New Vic Theater September 8th and 9th. Anaïs explores the beguiling, bohemian life of writer, Anaïs Nin, through music, modern dance, and theatre. Nin is renowned for her erotica and her surrealist writings, the canon of which continues to hold a strong appeal. Anaïs is created and co-produced by a team of female artists eager to bring Nin's story to conversation. The show features the work of composer-lyricist, Cindy Shapiro, and director-choreographer, Janet Roston, and is co-produced by Montecito writer, Diana Raab, who's long been inspired by Ms. Nin's life and work. The performers include one female vocalist and six dancers who spin narrative against a projected backdrop that plunges the show into a surrealist world that echoes Nin's writing.

A member of the artistic counterculture of Paris in the 1930s and New York City in the 40s, Nin was a free-love, social nonconformist deeply in tune with her psyche. Her journals, a significant aspect of her work, span the years from 1914 to her death in 1977, and provide a profound self-study of her life in art and passion. Nin and her writings are important in the feminist narrative--she is celebrated for her reclamation of a strong sexual identity, and her writing offers a female perspective in an artistic landscape dominated by the male voice. Anaïs, A Dance Opera utilizes excerpts of Nin's writing throughout the decades in its exploration of her life. In accordance with her legacy, Anaïs is designed to be a sensual, surrealist performance offering the viewpoint of a unique provocateur.
