BWW Preview: BLACK SQUARE PIZZA Opens in NYC

Pizza is the new black at Black Square (44 9th Avenue at 14 Street), the latest restaurant concept from Johnny Wooh, who showcased the joy of bacon at his omakase restaurant Belly, and Chris Reda, co- owner with Wooh of Gansevoort Market. With Chef and Brand Partner Peter Litschi, formerly of Roberta's, and Chef de Cuisine Joseph Macchia spearheading the kitchen, the namesake of Black Square is their signature BLKSQ made with cuttlefish ink infused dough making it black in color, topped with Soy Marinade Ribeye, French Onions, Taleggio, Pecorino, and Chives, which is sold for $10 a slice or $30 for the square pie. Other square options range from cheese to pepperoni to a classic slice made with tomato sauce, garlic, red onions, chili flakes, parmesan, pecorino, bread crumbs and pork sausage, with prices ranging from $5-$7 per slice and $15-$21 for the whole square. For traditionalists, there are also round, made-to-order pies with various topping options as well.

Knowing that people do not live by pizza alone, there is an "Other Than Pizza" menu, where the flavor bomb continues. Sunchokes & Artichokes is a crowd-pleasing dish of crispy sunchoke chips & creamy artichoke dip. A refreshing Salad of Baby Kale is enhanced with shaved carnival cauliflower, smoked almonds, and a Meyer lemon caper dressing; and an updated classic: a Perfect Baked Potato, stuffed with hot homemade giardiniera (pickled vegetables) topped with whipped creme fraiche.

Black Square is minimal in decor with black and white hand-painted murals of hip-hop artists. The 1000 square foot space has a full bar with beer, wine and cocktails on tap. The indoor seats 20 and the sidewalk cafe seats 40.

Black Square is open Monday - Wednesday 11am - 1am; Thursday - Saturday 11am - 4am; Sunday 11am - 12am. For more information, visit: https://www.blacksquarepizza.com/. You can follow Black Square Pizza on social media @blacksquarepizza.
