12 Peers Theater Presents MR. BURNS A Post-Electric Play By Anne Washburn

12 Peers Theater continues its 2017 season with Mr. Burns, a post-electric play by Anne Washburn, to be performed at the University of Pittsburgh Studio Theatre August 3-20, 2017. Mr. Burns, a post-electric play is a "pop culture comedy" set in post-apocalyptic America. Directed by Vince Ventura and featuring a dynamic cast of Pittsburgh performers, this play traces the evolution of humanity as the remnants of pop culture are repurposed for a post-electric world.

Through three acts of storytelling, singing, and dancing we analyze the nature of story and community, as well as how stories change based on the needs of the community they serve. Mr. Burns is a retelling of the classic "Cape Feare" episode of The Simpsons but at its core, it is a story of survival, memory, and hope."

After the collapse of civilization, a group of survivors share a campfire and begin to piece together the plot of "The Simpsons" episode "Cape Feare" entirely from memory. 7 years later, this and other snippets of pop culture (sitcom plots, commercials, jingles, and pop songs) have become the live entertainment of a post-apocalyptic society, sincerely trying to hold onto its past. 75 years later, these are the myths and legends from which new forms of performance are created. Mr. Burns, a post-electric play turns an eye to the communal creation of myth by exploring a post-apocalyptic landscape where yesterday's pop culture (an episode of "The Simpsons" pieced together entirely from memory) is rehashed as a myth of perseverance.

Mr. Burns, a post-electric play features Cassidy Adkins, Sara Ashley Fisher, Matt Henderson, Everett Lowe, Gayle Pazerski, Brittany Tague, Maura Underwood, and Joe York.

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT

Anne Washburn's plays include Mr. Burns, 10 out of 12, Antlia Pneumatica, A Devil At Noon, Apparition, The Communist Dracula Pageant, I Have Loved Strangers, The Ladies, The Internationalist, The Small, Little Bunny Foo Foo, and transadaptations of Euripides' Orestes and Iphigenia In Aulis. Awards include a Whiting Award, a PEN/Laura Pels International Foundation Theater Award, an Alpert Award, the Guggenheim, a NYFA Fellowship, a Time Warner Fellowship, Susan Smith Blackburn finalist, and residencies at MacDowell and Yaddo. She is an associated artist with The Civilians, Clubbed Thumb, New Georges, Chochiqq, and is an alumna of New Dramatists and 13P.
