Duke of York's Theatre History

Opened in 1892 as the Trafalgar Square Theatre, only a few years after changed its name to The Duke Of York’s Theatre in 1895 to honour the future King George V who agreed to the name change stating, ‘it is a right royal building with a theatrical tradition fit for a King.’ Since 1895, the theatre has played host to a multitude of acclaimed productions and actors; from a 14 year-old Charlie Chaplin’s only West End appearance in Sherlock Holmes in 1905, Embers, which starred Jeremy Irons, Eh Joe which starred Michael Gambon and In Celebration which starred Orlando Bloom. Most recently, the theatre opened its doors to acclaimed productions such as Tennessee Williams’ Summer and Smoke and Ibsen’s classic, Rosmersholm.
